Topic: Partnership Strategies for a Collaborative Society
主題:樂齡科技會議 - 共創樂齡城市伙伴策略
Introduction
Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Lingnan University is organizing the three-year ‘LU Jockey Club
Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing Project’ in 2019-2022, which aims to promote Gerontechnology and support smart ageing
Socialpreneurship development. This project serves as an educational platform to encourage the application and usage of
Gerontechnology in the society, and thus to reach the vision of “Smart Ageing”. The project also aims to provide training courses
and workshops on “Gerontechnology in Healthcare, Dining, Living and Transport”. Baseline studies will be conducted to build a
database in the areas of Gerontech products and services, social innovation and startups, with a vision to offer policy
recommendations to the industry and Government.

This conference serves to offer inspiration for the implications and partnership models in the gerontechnology ecosystem of a
rapidly ageing population. Numbers of stakeholders including leading experts would share their knowledge and experience, and
outline some of the strategies that might be adopted for better coordination and collaboration for the gerontechnology
development. The Conference also encourages exchange of ideas and promote future collaboration opportunities. With the joint
efforts, we aim to address the ageing issue in a holistic manner, and strengthen our capacity to foster the gerontechnology
ecosystem development in Hong Kong.

Gerontechnology – Start-up experience from Taiwan
   Professor Yeh-Liang HSU
Chair Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department & Director, Gerontechnology Research Centre, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan
   Editor-in-charge, Gerontechnology

Professor Yeh-Liang Hsu received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University and was
conferred Ph.D. by Stanford University in 1992. He then became a professor at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan, where he has had
many important roles, including Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Secretary-General, and Dean of Academic
Affairs. Professor Hsu directed his research interest in gerontechnology design and established the Gerontechnology
Research Center in 2003, the pioneering research institute in this field in Taiwan. He has published papers, books, and patents,
and has conducted many projects in gerontechnology. Professor Hsu has been actively involved in the International Society for
Gerontechnology (ISG). He was the chairperson of the 9th World Conference of Gerontechnology. He is Editor-in-Chief for Gerontechnology (the
official journal of the ISG) and IT Director of the ISG. In 2016, Professor Hsu founded Seda GTech Co. Ltd. Working with young cofounders who
were his students, he has been pushing gerontechnology research to real products for daily applications by older adults and caregivers.

The Gerontechnology Research Center (GRC) of Yuan Ze University (YZU), Taiwan, was first established in 2003. It is the pioneering research institute in
the field of gerontechnology in Taiwan. Gerontechnology research is only valuable if the research can be turned into real products for daily applications.
GRC has done many industry-academia collaboration projects. In 2016, GRC moved one step forward and established a start-up company Seda GTech.
In this start-up company, we take a design approach to gerontechnology, extending from creativity and prototypes in the University into products. What
is very challenging for us is turning the products into sales and daily applications. With the intention of selling the products, we truly care about our target
users, their needs, and the values our products can bring to them. That completes the full design cycle. Some of the product design experience, in
particular, “How the technology can be accepted as a natural part of older adults’ everyday lives in the homes?” will be shared in this presentation.

Abstract: Ageing has an enormous impact on all aspects of society and the economy. With these demographic changes upon us, it is important
that we are informed and equipped to meet not only the challenges of population ageing but also to capitalise on the enormous potential of this
ageing cohort which is fundamentally different from previous generations. A paradigm shift from “silver age” to “golden age” is imperative.
Increased longevity has driven unprecedented economic growth and new opportunities for personal fulfillment. With growing numbers, Golden
Agers (people 45+) mean a dynamic emerging market and greater human capital resources. A golden age for business is ahead of us, from smart
homes to innovative elderly services, from lifelong learning to new offerings in consumer products. The financial market will also be driven by the
impending need to make proper financial planning ready for the 100-year life and an enormous increase in financial assets predominantly
controlled by older investors. In short, the Golden Age economy is gathering momentum. On the other hand, Golden Agers are not only consumers
and recipients of services. Many of them seek meaning and purpose, disrupting retirement norms and expressing increasing interest in lifelong
work and volunteering. They are our only increasing natural resources, a talent pool that can empower economy and enhance productivity and
social cohesion of our 10 communities. Now and for many more years, our society could be reaping the productivity benefits of the experience
and maturity of large numbers of Golden Agers. Rebecca will explore how businesses are responding to this enormous and varied market needs
and how a collaborative approach could enhance productivity and social cohesion.

                                                                               9

possibilities in delivering better aged care, Queenie joins the industry hoping to transform the way people perceive aged care, while making it
relevant to the consumers of tomorrow through products, service and social innovation. Queenie is committed to channeling her passion, creativity

Abstract: According to a study The Swallowing Research Laboratory at The University of Hong Kong conducted in 2015, an estimated 60% of
elders residing in elderly homes in Hong Kong were diagnosed with swallowing difficulty (Dysphagia). Elders with swallowing problems have
limited meal choices, i.e., blended puree or porridge that often leads reduced appetite, a higher risk of malnutrition and possible aspirated
pneumonia. Elders may also experience lower self-esteem and overall lower quality of life.Japan pioneered the optimized texture modified
softmeal two decades ago using softmeal enzyme gellant in order to mitigate chances of choking. Ms Queenie Man, Founder and CEO of The
Project Futurus created “Captain Softmeal” (軟餐俠) in 2018 to help raise awareness and promote the concept of “dining with dignity”. “Captain
Softmeal” has since localized over 100 local recipes, hosted 100+ caregiver classes, assisted 170+ elderly care institutions and trained over 900
professionals on localizing the Japanese softmeal technique. “Captain Softmeal” was also the winner of The 7th Eldercare Innovation Awards
“Innovation of the Year – Health Program” in 2019.

Abstract: Hong Kong is facing a big challenge of a rapidly ageing population. To bridge the gap between research and practice use of
gerontechnology devices, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is launching a project entitled “Jockey Club Smart Ageing Hub” (JCSAH;
http://www.polyu.edu.hk/ageing), since Dec 2017. JCSAH provides an interdisciplinary platform for cross-sector stakeholders to interact with each
other for developing and adopting innovative and quality technology products that best fit the elderly. To tackle the challenges of having a shortage
of manpower and insufficient technological support in the residential elderly care homes, four “Real-life Hostels” are being set as role models for
demonstrating the practical application of gerontechnology in the elderly nursing hostels to enhance the residential experience of the elderly and
relieve the pressure of the staff. An example of positive collaborative outcomes at Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing will be shared for
illustrating the progress, difficulties and achievements of how academic and representatives from the elderly care field could co-develop a better
living environment for the elderly with dementia.
