Details 場次內容 Day 1 – 15 April (Thursday) (English Session) | AM Session Gerontechnology – Start-up experience from Taiwan Professor Yeh-Liang HSU Chair Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department & Director, Gerontechnology Research Centre, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan Editor-in-charge, Gerontechnology Professor Yeh-Liang Hsu received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University and was conferred Ph.D. by Stanford University in 1992. He then became a professor at Yuan Ze University, Taiwan, where he has had many important roles, including Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, Secretary-General, and Dean of Academic Affairs. Professor Hsu directed his research interest in gerontechnology design and established the Gerontechnology Research Center in 2003, the pioneering research institute in this field in Taiwan. He has published papers, books, and patents, and has conducted many projects in gerontechnology. Professor Hsu has been actively involved in the International Society for Gerontechnology (ISG). He was the chairperson of the 9th World Conference of Gerontechnology. He is Editor-in-Chief for Gerontechnology (the official journal of the ISG) and IT Director of the ISG. In 2016, Professor Hsu founded Seda GTech Co. Ltd. Working with young cofounders who were his students, he has been pushing gerontechnology research to real products for daily applications by older adults and caregivers. The Gerontechnology Research Center (GRC) of Yuan Ze University (YZU), Taiwan, was first established in 2003. It is the pioneering research institute in the field of gerontechnology in Taiwan. Gerontechnology research is only valuable if the research can be turned into real products for daily applications. GRC has done many industry-academia collaboration projects. In 2016, GRC moved one step forward and established a start-up company Seda GTech. In this start-up company, we take a design approach to gerontechnology, extending from creativity and prototypes in the University into products. What is very challenging for us is turning the products into sales and daily applications. With the intention of selling the products, we truly care about our target users, their needs, and the values our products can bring to them. That completes the full design cycle. Some of the product design experience, in particular, “How the technology can be accepted as a natural part of older adults’ everyday lives in the homes?” will be shared in this presentation. The silver hair market: A golden opportunity for business Mrs. Rebecca CHOY-YUNG Founder & Chair, Golden Age Foundation Mrs. Rebecca Choy Yung is a business entrepreneur turned social entrepreneur. Rebecca was a pioneer of the convention and exhibition industry in Hong Kong and China since the early 1980s. Rebecca received her B.SoSc. from Bristol University, UK and EMBA from Chinese University of Hong Kong. Abstract: Ageing has an enormous impact on all aspects of society and the economy. With these demographic changes upon us, it is important that we are informed and equipped to meet not only the challenges of population ageing but also to capitalise on the enormous potential of this ageing cohort which is fundamentally different from previous generations. A paradigm shift from “silver age” to “golden age” is imperative. Increased longevity has driven unprecedented economic growth and new opportunities for personal fulfillment. With growing numbers, Golden Agers (people 45+) mean a dynamic emerging market and greater human capital resources. A golden age for business is ahead of us, from smart homes to innovative elderly services, from lifelong learning to new offerings in consumer products. The financial market will also be driven by the impending need to make proper financial planning ready for the 100-year life and an enormous increase in financial assets predominantly controlled by older investors. In short, the Golden Age economy is gathering momentum. On the other hand, Golden Agers are not only consumers and recipients of services. Many of them seek meaning and purpose, disrupting retirement norms and expressing increasing interest in lifelong work and volunteering. They are our only increasing natural resources, a talent pool that can empower economy and enhance productivity and social cohesion of our 10 communities. Now and for many more years, our society could be reaping the productivity benefits of the experience and maturity of large numbers of Golden Agers. Rebecca will explore how businesses are responding to this enormous and varied market needs and how a collaborative approach could enhance productivity and social cohesion. 9
