WELCOME I’m very pleased to introduce the Juris Doctor (JD) program at the Monash Law Faculty. As a Monash JD Law student, you’ll have extraordinary and unique opportunities. You’ll be joining a world-class law school with a proud history and a demonstrated commitment to provide the best experiential legal education in Australia. At the Monash Law Faculty, we educate lawyers for careers across the globe and undertake research that makes a difference to Victoria, Australia and the world at large. Located in the heart of Melbourne’s legal precinct, our professional city premises for JD and masters’ students are in close proximity to major courts, law firms and barristers’ chambers. You’ll have access to work-situated experiences where you’ll learn how law operates in real life by working with clients of your own. The Monash Law Clinical Guarantee provides you with the opportunity to work in one of our community legal centres, mentored by experienced legal practitioners. You’ll acquire first-hand legal knowledge and provide an invaluable service to the community, all while earning credit towards your degree. T he course comprises 16 core units plus eight electives, including one commercial law constrained elective and one professional project constrained elective. The course is taught in three trimesters per year, from early January to mid-November. A ll subjects have 36 contact hours, except for principles of company law which has 42 hours. 3
ELECTIVE UNITS You have the opportunity to choose up to eight elective units from the Monash Law Faculty’s diverse master’s program, including skills units and JD-specific units. DUAL DEGREE MONASH FACULTY OF LAW/ WASHINGTON COLLEGE OF LAW We offer a dual-degree program with Washington College of Law (WCL) at American University, Washington, DC. The international JD program provides an excellent opportunity to acquire valuable onsite education and skills to work as a ‘local’ lawyer in both Australia and the US. The duration of our dual-JD program is four years for full-time students, with two years of full-time study in Washington, DC. Upon completion of the dual degree, students can sit the US bar examination and/or start the practical legal training process to see admission to practise in Victoria. Those who’ve completed 54 credit points in the JD program at Monash are eligible to apply, with places allocated on a competitive basis for up to three students each year. Selection is based on academic merit and is open to local and international students who are from a country other than the US. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Minimum entry requirements Applicants for the Monash JD must hold a recognised undergraduate degree. Selection is a competitive process based primarily on academic merit. An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) with at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 on a 7-point scale, or qualification/experience or satisfactory substitute that the faculty considers to be equivalent. OR An undergraduate degree (or equivalent) with at least a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 on a 7-point scale and LSAT score of 150+ (taken within five years prior to applying for admission). OR If, in addition to a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), the applicant has incomplete studies in a law admission degree course, a minimum GPA of 5.0 on a 7-point scale in the law studies, with no fail result in the final year, is required. Credit for prior studies, up to a maximum of 48 points, may be awarded. Commonwealth Support Paces (CSP) may be offered. Selection is highly competitive, with a limited number of places being awarded to applicants with the highest academic ranking. Applicants can only apply for a full-fee place and will be automatically considered for their eligibility for a CSP. The actual GPA required depends on the number and standard of applicants received during that selection period. Applicants wishing to transfer from a JD course at another university are assessed on their entire academic history. Where applicants have incomplete studies in a law admission degree course, a minimum GPA of 5.0 on a 7-point scale in the law studies, with no fail result in the final year, is required. Extra requirements Applicants who haven’t completed any formal study in the past eight years are required to submit a current curriculum vitae and a completed Monash JD personal statement. The personal statement may include your reasons for wanting to study law, why you want to study at the Monash Faculty of Law, any voluntary work or relevant work experience, and any applicable achievements and other relevant aspects that you feel will improve your application. Note: The personal statement should be no longer than one typed A4 page. English requirements All applicants need to satisfy the University’s English language requirements.
