Summer ACE@UTM 2018 Academic English Courses: Overview, Description, and Regulations You will have an opportunity to write an English language proficiency test on your first day of class. Based on your results, you will be placed in either the Academic English Level 50 or Academic English Level 60 course. Successful completion of either course may lead to undergraduate studies at U of T Mississauga in the Fall 2018 – Winter 2019 session. The Academic English courses focus on developing language as a tool for use in academic environments. The classes take a theme-based integrated skills approach with attention to and development of all four skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Emphasis is placed on the skills and strategies needed to understand and respond to authentic reading and listening texts. Attention to vocabulary and grammar is woven through the courses and is based on the texts covered in class. Students will engage in academic tasks that develop their ability to express themselves and successfully interact in a university setting. Through the online learning portal, students will have access to texts, resources, and materials so that they can extend their learning beyond the classroom. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the courses students will: • Respond to and create texts appropriate for purpose • Demonstrate an authorial voice and identity • Synthesize, summarize, and extract key information from lectures and across multiple source texts through paraphrasing and direct quotation • Apply interactional skills in small group discussions and demonstrate awareness of register • Follow academic lectures and take effective notes • Participate in and lead discussions in academic settings Assessments Tasks & Assessments Weight Dates Assessment 1 25% Week 3 Assessment 2 35% Weeks 5 & 6 Final Assessment 40% Week 8 Total 100% Students must maintain a minimum attendance of 80% of all classes in order to pass the course. 7|Page

Summer ACE@UTM 2018 Course Policies The following policies are in place to ensure the equitable assessment of all ACE@UTM students. Furthermore, these policies, which may be developed or revised from time to time, aim to limit disruption to the teaching and learning environment. Policy on Attendance In addition to meeting the academic requirements in each of the courses, students must attend all classes. Failure to maintain a minimum attendance of 80% will result in automatic failure in the course. Since students will be actively involved in both individual and group activities, regular attendance and full participation are important. Independent study and initiative are required for the successful completion of the program. Students who require an accommodation due to a legitimate reason, such as illness should consult with the Program Coordinator immediately. All absences are recorded by the course instructors. Three documented cases of lateness at the start of the class or after the break is recorded as one absence. Students are expected to be present for all assessments and coursework as outlined in the course syllabus. Should health concerns or extenuating personal circumstances arise that may adversely affect students’ performance, they should request an accommodation from the Program Coordinator immediately with supporting documentation. Students who fail to communicate their request for an accommodation will receive an automatic zero for the assessment. If appropriate documentation has been received and approval is granted, the student will be informed of the next steps. Reporting Absences 1. Students must report any absence from class prior to the commencement of class through email to the class instructor and to the Program Coordinator. 2. Any student who is absent for an assessment due to illness must submit the University of Toronto Verification of Student Illness or Injury form to explain the absence. If the form is not submitted, the student will receive a mark of 0% for the missed assessment. 3. The form can only be completed by the following practitioners: • a Physician or Surgeon registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario; • a Nurse Practitioner registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario; • a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario; • a Dental Surgeon (Dentist) registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario; • a health professional in any University of Toronto student health clinic. 4. If you miss an assessment due to illness, you must submit the completed form to your instructor immediately upon your return to class. 5. NOTE: Even if you submit the Verification of Student Illness or Injury form for an absence, the absence will still be calculated in your attendance record. 6. If you arrive in class after the start of an assessment, you will have only the amount of time remaining to complete the assessment. If you arrive after the completion of an assessment, you will not be given a make-up assessment. 9|Page
Summer ACE@UTM 2018 Religious Observances This course abides by the University’s policy on Scheduling of Classes and Examination and Other Accommodations for Religious Observances. Every effort will be made to provide accommodations for students who observe religious holy days. Since religious observances are known in advance, it is the student’s responsibility to alert the instructor and to request accommodation. Typically, students should do so at the beginning of the course when the course deliverables are discussed. You can access a complete description of the policy here. Request for Grade Review Upon receiving your Grade Report, you may submit a Request for Grade Review form to the Program Coordinator should you believe there to be a grading discrepancy. At the end of the course, you may only submit a request to have the Final Assessment reviewed. The Request for Grade Review forms will be posted on Blackboard. You will be asked to justify your request in writing, citing specific examples of why you believe your Final Assessment should be reviewed. All Grade Reviews will be administered by the Program Coordinator and your instructor will be consulted. In certain circumstances, an additional assessor may be asked to conduct an independent re-assessment. At the conclusion of the review, the Program Coordinator will inform you of the result. Please note that to request a review of any other assessment in the program, you need to make the request immediately after the assessment. In these circumstances, it is not necessary to submit a form. Initially, you should discuss your assessment results with your instructor and if necessary, the instructor will then consult with the Program Coordinator. Privacy Policy: Notice of Collection The University of Toronto respects your privacy. Personal information that you provide to the University is collected pursuant to section 2(14) of the University of Toronto Act, 1971. It is collected for the purpose of administering admissions, registrations, academic programs, university related student activities, activities of student societies, financial assistance and awards, graduation and university advancement, and for the purpose of statistical reporting to government. At all times it will be protected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Instructor and Course Evaluations Upon completion of the course, we will conduct formal instructor and course evaluations. The set of questions asked is meant to provide confidential feedback on the course content, organization, and the effectiveness of the instructor’s teaching. The data provide the program with the ability to refine and develop future programs. Please note that course evaluation results are released to instructors after final grades are approved and released to students. Blackboard and Email Communication Logging into Blackboard This program uses Blackboard for the course site. To access this site, or any other Blackboard- based course website, go to the UofT portal login page and log in using your UTORid and password. You will find the link to the ACE@UTM “All” course under “My Courses”. Email Communication with your Course Instructor You can check your UofT email account from Blackboard through a link to “Student Webmail” on the left side of the homepage. 1. Students must use their utoronto.ca email address to communicate with their instructor and anyone else involved in the program and at the University of Toronto. 2. Students should email their instructors if they have questions or concerns about course work. Student email messages must include a clear statement of purpose in the Subject 10 | P a g e
Summer ACE@UTM 2018 field (e.g., – Absence from Class); otherwise they are likely to be deleted, along with spam messages and messages potentially containing viruses. Email messages will be answered within 48 hours. Students are responsible for checking Blackboard and UTORmail daily for messages from both the administrative staff and instructors in the program. Students should check Blackboard and UTORmail before coming to class in the morning to check for important announcements that could include: classroom changes, program reminders, and campus updates. Academic Integrity and Student Code of Conduct 1 All institutions of higher learning place a strong emphasis on integrity. This certainly holds true for the University of Toronto, which is governed by both a Code of Student Conduct and a Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters. The University of Toronto is committed to ensuring academic integrity at all levels and relies on both faculty and students to fulfil this goal. All students have an obligation to make responsible decisions concerning their conduct. Students are expected to be respectful of all individuals in the UofT community. Any student who displays behaviour that is deemed disrespectful, non-compliant, disruptive, offensive, or threatening to personal safety and the safety of others may be dismissed from the program. A series of publications to assist students in identifying appropriate academic behaviour at the University of Toronto can be found on the website. Examples of offenses under the Code of Student Conduct include, but are not limited to: • Failure to respect the needs of fellow students for quiet in order to study and sleep; • Failure to respond promptly to communication from academic and administrative staff; • Acts of verbal or physical aggression toward any member of the UT community, including students and staff; • Negligence in observing the academic requirements of the program, including presence during all tests, exams, lectures, and presentations and full attention and participation in all classes; • Inappropriate use of University of Toronto facilities and property, including classrooms, equipment, common areas, and residence space. Examples of offenses under the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters include: • Changing, forging, or falsifying any document or evidence required by the University, in print or electronic form • Using or possessing any unauthorized devices or other aids, including unauthorized help on assignments or tests • Representing another author’s ideas or words as one’s own (copying, quoting without citations, or using another person’s ideas as your own – plagiarism) • Submitting work that was previously submitted for credit or work completed by another student in a previous course Note: Any student dismissed from the program will not receive a refund of the program tuition.
