“I think what stands out the most about York is the fact that, as a community, it has this immense potential to make anyone and everyone feel at home. I remember when I first arrived, I felt as though I was meant to be here, that I BELONG HERE and that feeling has never changed.” Vishwaveda Joshi • BA ’19, Anthropology and Political Science • Senior Don, Founders Residence, 2018-2019 • International Students Assistant, York International, 2018-2019 • Vice-Chair of the World University Services of Canada, Keele Campus chapter, 2016-2018 4 | 2021-2022 Undergraduate Students
“When I first came to York, I didn’t think of myself as a leader. Four years of involvement with the York community — from launching an International Student Mental Health campaign to mentoring and guiding new students as a Residence Life Don — has enriched my education, developed my compassion and built my confidence. Now I am working to create progressive spaces for fellow students and giving back to the community that welcomed me with open arms.” futurestudents.yorku.ca | 5

I have learned so much about the foundational skills that support life-long learning, like time management, critical thinking and presentation skills, all of which have helped me tremendously as a student. “When I came to York, I channeled my passion for sport, nutrition and training into classroom learning where I met my mentor, Dr. Veronica Jamnik, Associate Professor in Kinesiology. Dr. Jamnik’s classes were fantastic and she pushed my learning and motivation to a new level. By third year I was developing training programs for clients and working with new firefighters conducting VO2 Max, 12-lead-EKG, acrophobia, claustrophobia, strength and power output tests. As students we were testing the future of first responders in Ontario. I also volunteered with Boxing Ontario, doing fitness assessments for young and aspiring athletes. Now I’m putting my learning into practice every day with clients and fellow coaches.” futurestudents.yorku.ca | 19

“I was just a 22-year-old Financial & Business Economics student when I made history on Dragons’ Den with the Summary Scanner app which automatically summarizes any document in seconds from just a picture. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of business and technology and taught myself to code while I was studying in my program. Using different fields of artificial intelligence, my app converts images into text files, generates study questions and promotes speed reading. Throughout my education, I benefited from the support of professors and mentors. Not only did my professors provide in-depth explanations of economics subjects, they offered advice about networking and business strategy.” Kevin made history as the first entrepreneur on the show to close a deal with all six Dragons with his Summary Scanner app. Now, the app has been downloaded 115,000+ times. futurestudents.yorku.ca | 27
