A pensive Yeshiva University Coach Sarachek takes in the action with his longtime successor Coach Jonathan Halpert Great Coach, Good Man, Better Jew By Jeffrey S. Gurock, Libby M. Klaperman Professor of Jewish History, Yeshiva University Originally published in The Jewish Week, Nov. 25, 2005 In the days following his death last week in Florida at age 93, Bernard “Red’ Sarachek was lauded as a great basketball “innovator” and “theorist.” Roundball cognoscenti recalled that in the 1960s,when his nomadic Yeshiva University team practiced on the West Side at Power Memorial High School—YU had no “home court,” and the players trekked down from Washington Heights—big-time coaches and their assistants ringed the court to watch the play patterns Red taught his squad. Those faithful to the memory of Sarachek’s acumen spoke of his dedication to teaching his athletes to “move without the ball” or “to go back door,” essentially to use a more gifted player’s overaggressiveness to Yeshiva’s advantage. And some devoted Red men waxed eloquent about how after practices, area Jewish and Catholic high school coaches would seek out Saracheck for strategies. Recollections abounded about what Red said—that chain of Sarachek traditions—which was passed from coach to coach. His close friend, former
St. John’s University coach Lou Carnecca, encapsulated what so many basketball folks were thinking when he once observed, “Red was the ‘guru.’” Others who knew the coach spoke knowingly of his honesty, integrity, and his personal commitment to social justice. They recalled that when Red coached in the Eastern League in the 1940s—in the days before the rise of the National Basketball Association—he backed his players against the owners when the exploited athletes struck for a few extra dollars. Perhaps his Workmen’s Circle socialist background inspired that move. But it was an even higher calling that led him to courageously offend racist sensibilities when in the pre-civil rights era, he started three African-American players on his Scranton Miners team. The conventional sports wisdom was that local fans would not support a club with so many minority players “representing” them. But the contrarian coach would not hear of that. He believed in a sports meritocracy long before it was fashionable. Some of those who privately eulogized their coach may have pondered whether these deeply felt For the coach, even the subway was a classroom.
commitments ultimately stymied his advancement in the old-boys network of professional sports. Clearly, however, Sarachek never regretted his decisions. But Bernard Sarachek was more than just a great coach and a very good man. I will remember him—and I got to know him only very late in his life— as a very proud Jew. He constantly preached that his players represented the Jewish people” during an era in the 1940s to mid-1960s in which open expressions of Jewish pride were all too rare. He was never reticent about going right into the stands after an anti-Semitic cat caller. And while he personally was not a kipa wearer, he was respectful of those who were. Anyone who might scoff or ridicule that outward expression of faith immediately felt Sarachek’s verbal and physical wrath. Sarachek applied the type of street justice he learned as a kid, in the mean streets of Williamsburg, to handling that sort of challenge. Moreover, he was deeply committed to encouraging those under his sway to acquire the type of Jewish religious educational training that had not been extended to him. Over the past few generations, “outreach” has become a byword for much of Jewish educational initiatives. And many rabbis, of very different stripes, have been justifiably credited with influencing young Jews toward practicing what the faith preaches. They have earned their tributes, but they, and we, also owe a debt to coach Sarachek. Certainly at my home institution of Yeshiva University, a more than 50-year tradition of attracting the less than fully observant began when a basketball guru figured out that boys who might come to Washington Heights to play basketball also might stay to learn and emerge as more committed and proud Jews. So how would Red Sarachek like to be remembered? I’m guessing this self-effacing man would have appreciated all the sports accolades he received. Undoubtedly he was proud of what was said about him as a man. He might even have given a pass to those who emphasized that as a leader, he was too short tempered. But in the end, I believe he would want most to be recalled as a proud Jew. How do I know? On the wall of my study hangs a Rosh HaShanah card from the coach who became my friend. It bears a succinct but compelling, three-word command: “Keep Judaism Alive!” Jeffrey S. Gurock is the author of “Judaism’s Encounter with American Sports” (Indiana University Press).
“The Coach” Bernie “Red” Sarachek It’s been 45 years since I played my last game And since then my life has never been the same Yet I often look back and still can remember When basketball was my passion from January through December That magical time still resides in my head The excitement and honor of playing for “Red” The boyhood dreams of basketball glory Became lessons for life in a wonderful story We were taught by legends, whose praise I still sing Like Hank Rosenstein, Nat Militzok, Bobby Kelly, Dolly King They ingrained in us never to commit the big sin By giving less than your best, because “quitters never win” When boys grew into manhood, because we had learned Success can be achieved, but only when it is earned
Carnesecca and Rossini would sit and watch in awe As Yeshiva kids ran “C plays,” “pick and roll,” and especially “back door” “Red”also taught us to love and honor the game So it’s sad, but yet true, that things aren’t the same There was no “trash talking,” “slash the throat,” or “in your face” It was played as a game marked by skills, “smarts”and grace The values and lessons we learned from these men Can never be duplicated in gymnasiums again But give credit where it’s due, it was “Red”and he alone Who led by example, and thus set the tone No one worked harder, or suffered defeat more But he taught us to persevere, by the smile that he wore Always forgiving the mistakes that we made What mattered most to “Red,”was how hard we had played “Winning isn’t everything,” Lombardi was wrong! Never dog it, “play with pride,” that was Red’s song We learned life is like sports, there’s always a test But you’ve already succeeded if you’ve given your best “Be unselfish,” “be a man,” “go without the ball” These were in retrospect, the greatest lessons of all For they exemplify life, and the values we daily use Be we Black, White or Christians, Protestants or Jews College players and professionals, he was father to all No player of his would ever say, “Just give me the damn ball” And over the years I’d often reminisce That these were the times I truly did miss He insisted we study hard, and our futures to plan For there are no easy “lay-ups,” as boy becomes man We are shaped by the values we are constantly taught But unlike precious jewels, they cannot be bought We learn them from people, by whom we are led And we were the lucky ones because we had “Red” The record will show, and with this I’ll end There was never a finer coach, nor ever a better friend With respect and love, Abbey Gewirtz, Yeshiva University, 1951–1955
