TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |3 Message from Our Principal Is cúis mhór áthais dhom fáilte a chur roimh gach éinne atá ag léamh an leabhrán iontach seo. It’s a great honour for me to welcome you all to the very first edition of the Tyndall College Yearbook. Great credit must go to our students and to our teachers, Ms. Phelan, Ms. Tyrrell and Ms. McArdle for carry- ing out this exciting initiative which will now become an annual event for Tyndall College. I would like to pay a special thanks to Ms. Phelan, who assisted our students with the necessary leadership and inspiration to carry out this task. It has been an eventful first year for Tyndall College. As we move towards the summer holidays I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our exam students in Junior and Leaving Cert our best wishes in their upcoming exams. We have had many exciting events this year, from our sporting successes in Cross Country and Basketball to our student achievers working with World Wise Global Schools, all of which are documented in this excellent production. While many events are celebrated here, the real successes in Tyndall College have been in the classroom. I want to pay tribute to the excellent teaching staff and to the SNAs who have been tremendous throughout the year in supporting our students. Great credit too must go to Sinéad O’Keeffe and to the School Completion team for really looking after our students’ needs, and a special mention to Liz who looks after our students on a daily basis in the lunch room. To everyone’s “mammy”, Bridget Sheehan, who is the heartbeat of our school, our caretakers, Willie and Tommy and to all the cleaning staff a huge thank you. They do such fantastic work that goes unseen but are so important to our school community. I am very fortunate to work with excellent people, none more so than Ms. Morrissey, Deputy Principal, who is a phenomenal support to our staff, our students and also to me. Finally, I would like to thank our students and parents for choosing Tyndall College. We are moving into an exciting time in our school and we will very soon be moving to a state of the art building, which will have facilities that will further enhance the learning opportunities for our students. I sincerely hope you enjoy this yearbook and please remember, my door is always open to parents and students. No problem is too big or too small and I assure you that I will work with you to ensure the best outcome for your child and our student. Mr. Gerry McGill Principal, Tyndall College
4 | TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 PARTING WORDS FROM SIXTH YEAR SHIRLEY WOONG We have grown so much through the years. Not all of our experiences were good ones, but I presume that the bad ones only aided our development to become better. Through the six years we have lost some of our friends who chose a different path but we have also gained some new classmates as well. Our class might be indeed small but that does not make it any less as important as the others. The past six years was overall a wonderful and memorable experience and we are proud to say we went to both Carlow Vocational School and Tyndall College. We will not forget the teachers who have taught us along the way, and how they taught not only the academics, but gave us lifelong advice. We appreciate every friend that we have met in school and how each person has their own character to bring to that day. We hope that our class was able to bring a sense of colour to the building and light it up as well as the other students. Our experience here will surely not be forgotten and we would sincerely like to say thank you to the individuals who make up this amazing school. TYNDALL COLLEGE CLASS OF 2018

Tyndall College’s Senior Leaders will play an important role in assisting our new First Year students next year. Their first training day took place in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel on April 20th where they undertook intensive activities and skill development to help them prepare for the incoming First Years in September. The team will certainly make a positive contribution to the lives of our new students. The very best of luck to our Senior Leaders for the year ahead!
TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |7 FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCES BY ALEX DOOLEY At the start of first year, it was scary being in a new school and meeting so many new people. By the middle of the first term, luckily, I had made a lot of great friends and had settled in pretty quickly. The school has great teachers and I was having a lot of fun by the second term. We’ve been able to go on so many enjoyable trips and we also learned a lot from them. We also got to do a lot of great projects in classes. Overall I love my school, my friends and my principal. When I’m older and leaving Tyndall College I’ll always look back on this year as one of the best ever.
TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |9 TRIP TO THE NATIONAL HERITAGE PARK, WEXFORD O n Tuesday 30th February our Junior Cert Geography and History students enjoyed a wonderful trip to the National Heritage Park, Wexford, where they got to experience first-hand what life was like living in Ireland in the past. They also got the chance to look at an audio visual display before getting a guided tour of the park. Afterwards the students were taken to Leisure Max where they got the opportunity to go bowling. A thoroughly enjoyable and educational day was had by all!

12 | TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 STUDENT COUNCIL By Sophie Kennedy W e are a group of students who have been elected by our classes to represent them. Each year group has two representatives on the council who the students can go to and voice their ideas or concerns. At the start of the school year we all attended a full day training course to prepare for our roles on the Council. When the Council meet, roughly twice a month, or more when certain issues arise, we discuss the ideas that have been given to us by our classmates. Ms. Creegan is our liaison teacher and attends all our meetings to ensure everything runs smoothly and to guide us. When the Council has decided on what ideas or concerns we want to bring forward, a representative approaches the principal, vice principal or teachers as required. They set up a meeting and discuss the issues and where possible, our suggestions are put into practice. Throughout the year, our meetings have been centered on improving our communication between the student body, the Council and the school staff. Some of the things we have achieved are; • We had an input into the new school Code of Conduct • We came up with a suicide awareness day in conjunction with the Cycle Against Suicide • We helped teachers design a new student-friendly school journal • We provided feedback on our schools Critical Incident Policy • We voted on the new Tyndall College PE uniform and Senior/Junior jumpers. Overall, the Student Council is extremely important and gives the students a voice in our school. The committee meet weekly and discuss ideas relating to the themes already covered. The committee took part in various activities throughout the year, for example a Recycling Workshop in Carlow IT. Here the students learned lots of important information on what can and can’t be recycled and what happens to the recycled material afterwards. INTERCULTURAL WEEK______________________ “Tyndall College, Everyone is Welcome Here”. This was the message echoing around the corridors of Tyndall College in October as we held our first ever Intercultural Week. The school now has students from 19 different countries, so it was decided that this had to be celebrated. A colourful visual display of flags, greetings, fact files and a globe was put in place at the entrance corridor of the school with every country being represented. Many activities took place over the week including discussions, a céilí, Spanish dancing, quizzes, and students were also given the opportunity to sample food from some of the countries. Students also worked on translating Hello and Welcome into the language of the 19 nationalities represented in the school and these were displayed around the school building. Some proved easier to pronounce than others! To conclude the week a Name that Flag competition was held for all years. A great week was had by all, and the students most certainly enjoyed learning about the cultures of their fellow students.

TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |17 MENSANA MENTAL HEALTH WEEK A ll students and staff at Tyndall College were involved in the promotion of positive mental health initiatives over the course of Mensana Week in October. A wide variety of activities took place to high- light the importance of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Sixth Year students organised a balloon release. TY students connected with people while having tea and cake at The Hub pop-up café in town. Fifth Year students worked up a sweat with Joe Dunny at the Fit- To-Go Boot Camp in the Town Park in recognition that a healthy body can help us maintain a healthy mind. An action- packed week that highlight- ed such an important cause.
18 | TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 TRANSITION YEAR What a busy and action-packed year this has been for our TYs, with both weekly activities and larger events running throughout the school year. The year began with a trip to the Ploughing Championships and a Bogathon – straight in at the deep end! From all the teachers in Tyndall College we would also like to offer a big thank you to our TY stu- dents for all the help they have given us at different stages throughout the year!

The students were given a week to design a poster. Ben Kennedy was the successful winner with his logo design and Agna Kramarczyk came in second place. Senior students and teachers were given a unique opportunity to have comedian Ger Carey perform a private show for them as part of Business Week. Ger, a comedian loved by Irish students for his hilarious comedy shows, presented students with a hilarious, imaginative and thoroughly entertaining insight in to the teenage mindset. TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |27 LITERACY T yndall College is committed to enhancing and celebrating literacy on a daily basis. This year in November, Literacy Week afforded us the opportunity to not only continue with this great work, but to engage in a number of other fun literacy-based activities such as our “Shelfie” competition. Staff members photographed their bookshelves (making sure there were a few clues visible!) and students had to guess who had taken the Shelfie. Continuing our commitment and dedication to literacy at Tyndall College Literacy Fortnight was held in April. All First Year students enjoyed an extra focused literacy class each day where various activities and exercises helped to break down many frequently encountered aspects of the English language. Students were given the opportunity to practice and develop their reading and writing skills. Literacy Fortnight was a great success. Many thanks to Ms. McAssey and all teachers and students involved in running the classes.

40 | TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 SOCCER__________________________________________ SENIOR BOYS SOCCER The Tyndall College Senior Boys Soccer team played with great spirit and loyalty to their team this year when competing in the Kilkenny Carlow league. The boys played a total of four games throughout the year and improved with every game. They began with a heavy defeat away to Kilkenny City Vocational School. This was followed by a home defeat the following week to Gaelcholáiste Pobail Osraí. Team morale was low at this stage and it would have been easy for the season to fall apart. Tyndall College then went to Graiguenamanagh to play Duiske College in the last round of the league and fought with great determination and skill. Tyndall conceded two late goals and this proved to be the difference at the end. With a much improved performance, however, spirits were high after this match. This result meant that we played Kilkenny City Vocational School in the league semi-final in their back yard. Tyndall proved to be a different opposition on the day and with seven minutes left were still level with the Kilkenny boys. The Kilkenny boys weren’t to be denied, however, and broke the deadlock with a well-worked goal. Tyndall didn’t have time to pull back the deficit and there ended a spirited season with much to take heart from going forward in future years. SENIOR BOYS SOCCER Back Row (l-r): Mr. D. TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |41 JUNIOR BOYS SOCCER The Tyndall College Junior Boys Soccer team have had a fantastic year to date. The first game was away to Kilkenny City Vocational School where the Carlow boys showed great spirit to keep trying to break down a well organised Kilkenny outfit. With two minutes remaining Brandon Doyle scored the winner after some beautiful trickery on the left wing. Scoil Aireagail from Ballyhale then travelled to Tyndall College in Round Two. The Carlow boys showed a superior sense of space and technical know-how to crack the opposition and won by a comfortable five goals. Next up were Gaelcholáiste Pobail Osraí who proved to be a spirited team and very dangerous on the counter-attack. With Tyndall behind at half-time, they displayed great belief in themselves in the second-half to win by four goals eventually. The final game was away to Duiske College in Graiguenamanagh. Again, the Tyndall boys were tested early on when they conceded an early goal. Their determination and loyalty showed strongly once again, however, when they scored the equaliser with five minutes remaining, con- firming top spot from the group stages. A big well done to all players concerned and there is no doubt that this team is one to watch over the coming years if the positive attitude continues. JUNIOR BOYS SOCCER Back Row (l-r): Mr. D. TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 |43 _______________________________________ FOOTBALL The U16 and Senior Football panels both had early exits this year. The championship was run on a knock- out basis. The U16 football team met Coláiste Mhuire of Johnstown on their first outing. Playing against the wind in the first half proved quite difficult to get settled. We played with most of our team behind the ball in order to get in good attacking positions. Coláiste Mhuire's defence frustrated Tyndall College's attacks on a number of occasions. In the second half the game started to drift away from us. Coláiste Mhuire's strong panel proved hard to match. The lads played very well and fought to the end. Unfortunately as it was a knock out basis we had an early exit this year. The Senior football team met Kilkenny City Vocational School. This was another tough match. A low scoring first half saw us trailing at half time. KCVS proved to have the upper hand in the second half. The lads fought really hard in the second half, but struggled to keep a foothold in the game. We gave it our all, but unfortunately we came up against a better team and the year had a disappointing early exit for us. Back Row (l-r): Mr. F. 44 | TYNDALL COLLEGE YEARBOOK 2018 Cross Country_______________ Tyndall College was represented in the final leg of the Three Counties Cross Countries Championships in November in Graiguecullen GAA grounds. This final leg of the three-day event was comprised of relay races, in which schools looked to add points to their tally from the first two days. We had two teams competing, with our Minor Boys team consisting of Tyrese Leonard, Kristian Browne, Thato Rammusi and Sam Kennedy competing very strongly having put a huge effort in to their race. The Intermediate Boys team on the day was made up by Eric McDonnell, Iain Kelly, Lais Zilerivius and Brandon Doyle. They finished in an excellent 5th position in their relay race, and consequently won gold medal in the Intermediate Boys Division 3. It was a well-paced and extremely mature run by such a young team. Huge congratulations to them and to all who represented the school over the three days of competition. We look forward to next year which will also include the track season in Spring time.
