OUR WORLD 02 Project Coldstream in preparation for global air cargo deliveries of COVID vaccine. WFS has launched Project Coldstream to co-ordinate its response to the anticipated global transportation of some 16 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine, expected to commence in late 2020 and continue through 2021 and 2022; IATA stated it would be the largest airlift of a single commodity ever, requiring the equivalent capacity of 8,000 747 aircraft! The task force will be headed and led by Mike Duffy, WFS’ EVP Innovation and supported by Justin Jaques, as the Group Commercial delegate, Valérie Marchand Battard as the Communication delegate, John Dowds as the EMEAA delegate and Shawnpaul Booth as the North America delegate. The task force will also bring in all the global expertise needed to tackle this challenge and ensure the preparedness of WFS’ pharma handling capability, develop in-house solutions devise plans for additional capacity where needed, and work closely with WFS’ airline customers. WFS currently operates 12 dedicated pharma facilities in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Brussels, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Johannesburg, London, Madrid, Miami, New York JFK, and its state-of- the-art Pharma Centre at Paris CDG. These facilities are all either IATA CEIV or Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certified or compliant. WFS’ investments in a network of temperature-controlled pharma handling facilities at strategic airport locations around the world over the past two years means it has already earned preferred partner status with many of the world’s biggest transporters of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Since the start of the COVID pandemic, WFS has been at the forefront of the global response, ensuring vital supplies of Personal Protective Equipment and other medical supplies arriving at airports for hospitals and medical centres around the world have been handled quickly and securely to help save the lives of patients recovering from the virus, and support front-line medical personnel. We are extremely proud to be playing a key role in the international response to COVID and the next big stage of this will be the rapid and safe distribution of vaccines once they are approved. Just Culture: What is it and how does it apply to me? PERSONNEL READINESS A Just Culture is defined as a culture in which you and your colleagues are not punished for actions, omissions or decisions you make based on your training and experience, but where gross negligence, wilful violations and destructive acts are not tolerated. Only a very small proportion of human actions that are unsafe are actually deliberate (eg. criminal activity, substance abuse, use of controlled substances, reckless non-compliance, sabotage etc.) and therefore deserve sanctions of appropriate severity. On the other hand, we know that a blanket amnesty on all unsafe acts would lack credibility in the eyes of employees and could be seen to OPERATIONAL READINESS oppose natural justice. Through the new Group HSSE Policy, WFS has reaffirmed its commitment to open reporting and fair and just treatment of all employees involved in HSSE events. We need to learn from our errors and mistake and avoid punishing people unless there has been unacceptable behaviour. So it is vital that you feel you will be fairly treated if you ‘put your hand up’ to provide essential safety- related information. We have various processes at WFS for investigating incidents and assessing the actions of individuals (including leaders) but we are now working on refining and standardising these, and making use of our Pulse system to ensure we are fair and consistent in applying these ‘Just Culture’ tools. David Clark, Global Head of Safety & Security, and the global HSSE team will work closely with regional and country management teams as well as employee representatives, as we continue the journey towards an industry leading ‘Just Culture’ policy and process at WFS.
