HOW TO REGISTER Online and In-Person Registration Students can register for non-credit courses through the frst day of class. Online Registration: Students can submit their non-credit registration requests via our web site: https://sunysccc.edu/About-Us/Workforce-Development-and-Community- Education/WFD-CE-Course-Registration/WFD-CE-Course-Registration-Form.html any time of the day or night. In-person Registration: Students can register in-person at the Registrar’s Ofce, Elston Hall, Room 212, during regular College hours. For information, please call 518-381-1348. Payment for non-credit courses is expected at the time of registration. Students may pay in person by visiting the Student Business Ofce, located in Elston Hall 219 or via our website, sunysccc.edu/Admissions/Paying-for-SUNY-Schenectady/Student- Business-Ofce/index.html. Workforce Development and Community Education Refund and Cancellation Policy Courses may be canceled due to insufcient enrollment. A 100% refund will be made for any course canceled by SUNY Schenectady. Every efort will be made to notify students so it is essential the WFD&CE ofce has correct contact information. If a student must withdraw from a non-credit course, a written request must be received TWO business days prior to the course start date via mail to SUNY Schenectady Ofce of Workforce Development and Community Education, 201 State Street, Schenectady, N.Y. 12305 or email at noncreditreg@sunysccc.edu. • No refunds will be granted for non-attendance of a course(s). • Once you are registered for a course(s) you are responsible for payment (tuition, fees) for the course(s) regardless of whether you attend unless you withdraw at least two business days prior to the course(s) start date. Beginning two business days prior to the start of class the refund policy is as follows: • For courses eight weeks or less no refund is available. • For courses nine weeks or longer: • Between two business days prior to the start of class and 8 hours of scheduled class time a 75% refund will be issued.* • Between 9 hours and 16 hours of scheduled class time a 50% refund will be issued.* • After 17 hours of scheduled class time no refund is available. *Refunds do not include the cost of materials, textbooks or administrative fees and will be issued in the form of a check that may take up to 21 business days to process. Registration Calendar Non-Credit classes begin throughout the semester in September, October, November and December. Check specifc courses in this directory for start dates. In-person registration is ongoing and students may register until the course start date. SUNY Schenectady is closed: September 7, 2021 (Labor Day) ; November 25-26, 2021 (Thanksgiving break); and December 24 – January 2, 2022 (Holiday Break). 4 WFD&CE
COVID RESPONSE With the recent FDA approval of the Pfzer COVID vaccine, a student vaccination mandate is now a requirement for all SUNY campuses. All students with at least one in-person class or who come to campus for any purpose must provide proof of receiving a full vaccination series. This includes, both doses of either Pfzer or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at the time of registration. Information about medical and religious exemptions can be found at this link: https://www.sunysccc.edu/Current-Students/Return- to-Campus.html. Please note, vaccinated students are required to complete COVID pool- testing monthly. Efective August 30, 2021, and until further notice, face masks are required in all in-person classes at all SUNY Schenectady locations. This policy aligns with masking requirements at all Schenectady County buildings, and complies with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendation of universal indoor masking for all faculty, staf, students, and visitors to colleges, regardless of vaccination status. The COVID-19 pandemic prompts the need for this additional required syllabus statement. While a temporary mandate, and although no end date has been established, this policy remains in efect “until further notice.” This mandatory mask policy applies to all instructors and students and is key to safely maintaining in-person teaching and learning at SUNY Schenectady, and is detailed completely in the Student Code of Conduct. The following rules apply: • The required mask must fully cover both one’s nose and mouth. • Students who attempt to enter a classroom without wearing masks will be asked by the instructor to put on their masks prior to • Students who remove their masks during a class session will be asked by the instructor to resume wearing their • Students and instructors may remove their masks briefy to take a sip of water but should replace masks The consumption of food will not be permitted. Students who do not comply with the expectation that they wear a mask in accordance with the College-wide face mask requirement may be subject to disciplinary actions per the rules, regulations, and policies of SUNY Schenectady, including but not limited to those outlined in the Student Handbook. Non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action, up to and including any of the following: • dismissal from the course (s) • dismissal from the College. Fall 2021 5
COMMUNITY EDUCATION COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY The SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) ofers courses in which students can earn a non-credit Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology as well as special topic courses. Students 16 years of age and older may enroll. Lectures, readings, discussions, feld trips, and hands-on activities are among the teaching methods employed in all courses. Students learn critical thinking, analysis, and other general skills that thy can apply in the feld, lab, and in their personal research. They also have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and national archaeological associations, and they can use the program as a stepping-stone to undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in anthropology and related felds. Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology In order to earn the Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology, students must complete six required courses and experience (see chart below). This certifcate provides students an educational opportunity through classroom instruction and experience to learn about regional archaeology and acquire the knowledge and skills needed in order to pursue archaeology under professional supervision. Certifcate of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA) Students who have completed the Certifcate of Profciency in Archaeology are eligible to obtain a CASCA by successfully completing CFP 101 Independent Archaeology Project and six special topic courses. Students must consult with a SUNY Schenectady-CAP instructor about enrollment in the Independent Study course. 6 WFD&CE

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH CRN# 90389 September 1 – December 31 CFP 100-51 By Appointment Fee: $35 For Community Archaeology Program certifcate students only This course is mandatory for students fulflling the 60 experience hours required for the SUNY Schenectady Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certifcate. Additionally, this course is required for all students engaged in archaeological research and laboratory under a SUNY Schenectady CAP instructor’s supervision. Students must speak with an instructor before registering. INDEPENDENT ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT CRN# 90388 September 1 – December 31 CFP 101-51 By Appointment Fee: $125 For Community Archaeology Program certifcate students only This course is necessary for all Community Archaeology Program (CAP) certifcate students wishing to work on their approved archaeological products (e.g., articles for publication, exhibits, public presentations or site studies and reports) and is required for their Certifcates of Advanced Study in Community Archaeology (CASCA). Students must speak with an instructor before registering. RECORDING AND ARCHIVING ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATA CRN# 90467 September 14 – November 16 6-9 p.m. CFP 107-51 Tuesdays Fee: $165 This course addresses why detailed records are maintained during excavation, as well as how artifacts and records that form the basis for future research are processed. Hands-on activities include artifact illustration and description, photographic recording, the use of computers for databases and analysis, and fnal data archiving. The course is supplemented with a visit to an archive. Prerequisite: CFP 106 Historical Archaeology or CFP 102 Native American Archaeology. TEXTILES TO DYE FOR CRN# 90908 September 22 – November 3 6-8:30 p.m. CFP 138-51 Wednesdays Fee: $125 In 17th and 18th century America, textiles were worth their weight in gold, second only to precious metals and gems, textiles were listed at enormous values on household inventories. Using primary sources, this 7-part series will begin in the 17th century and end in the 19th. All of the necessary fabrics within both wealthy and working-class households will be illustrated, including clothing, furnishings, and foor treatments. Working through Fall 2021 7
COMMUNITY EDUCATION the 17th and 18th centuries and ending in the Industrial Revolution and factor-made goods, topics will include methods of production, using all-natural dyes, homespun and the luxury textiles of the upper classes. Textiles held such an important place in America that they infuenced the social issues of the slave trade, indentured servants, and child labor. The last class will be a feld trip to an early home in the Stockade where many of the examples covered will be displayed. GRAVESTONE CLEANING CRN# 90909 October 2 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. CFP 123-01 Saturday Fee: $35 This course will be taught at Vale Cemetery, located at 907 State St., Nott Terrace, Schenectady, New York 12307. Would you like to learn how to clean cemetery stones? Do you have a family plot with a stone that needs cleaning? Are you having a difcult time reading the worn lettering on a stone? Melody Howarth will show you cleaning and reading methods that work. Join Ms. Howarth at Vale Cemetery for this informative workshop. Students will be contacted prior to the class with meeting instructions. Students are asked to bring gloves, bottled water and a bagged lunch. COMMUNITY EDUCATION >> KIDS AND TEENS STEM SCHOLARSHIP FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED KIDS/TEENS This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) scholarship was established in 2017 by SIM (Society for Information Management) Albany. As part of its eforts to give back to the local community, SIM looks for opportunities to collaborate and work with academic institutions and non-proft organizations that promote STEM through their programs. The STEM scholarship will be awarded to economically disadvantaged students interested in attending STEM classes through the SUNY Schenectady Workforce Development and Community Education’s Kid and Teen Academy. The intention of the scholarship is to make it possible for economically disadvantaged students to take STEM classes by funding some or all of the cost of a class. The number of awards and award amount may vary based on the number of applicants and the type of class. Look for the STEM icon @ to identify STEM oferings. This scholarship is only for economically disadvantaged students wishing to take STEM courses. BEGINNER UKULELE CRN# 90422 September 11 – October 16 9:30-10:30 a.m. CFP 608-51 Saturdays Fee: $155 Students, ages 10 and older, of all skill levels are welcome. Bring your uke and your love of music and creativity to learn ukulele, the most accessible of fretted instruments. By learning the basics of rhythm, chords, and melody on the uke, you will quickly have fun and be able to put together these building blocks to create your own sound. We will learn songs from many eras of the American Songbook to apply the techniques. Handouts provided and a recording device is recommended. Students must bring their own ukuleles. PIANO LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS CRN# 90387 September 13 – December 3 CFP 300-51 By Appointment Fee: $235 This course, designed especially for beginners ages 6-16, will include fundamental instruction in note reading, rhythm recognition, proper hand position, and chords. MODERN/CONTEMPORARY DANCE FOR TEENS AND ADULTS CRN# 90535 September 15 – November 17 7-8 p.m. CFP 742-51 Wednesdays Fee: $100 Weekly class will move from stretching thru a blended style incorporating elements of: classical ballet, classical modern dance (Horton, Lemon, Graham…) with a healthy dose of post-modern dance (generally a mix of theater and dance) and jazz; think earth bound ballet with some leaps and some moves lying on the ground. COMMUNITY EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PREP AND ESOL TEST ASSESSING SECONDARY COMPLETION (TASC) AND ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL) PROGRAMS SUNY Schenectady is pleased to ofer Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) and English for Speakers of Other Languages courses through a partnership with Capital Region BOCES and Washington Irving Educational Center. INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL CRN# 90912 September 14– October 26 6-8 p.m. CFP 411-51 Tuesdays Fee: $135 Businesses, colleges and universities require students to create, analyze, and share important data quickly. This introductory course covers how to structure your spreadsheet for data input, how to create formulas, and then progress to dynamically displaying the results in a custom chart. With Excel, you will get the most out of your information. INTERMEDIATE EXCEL CRN# 90913 November 2 – December 14 6-8 p.m. CFP 415-51 Tuesdays Fee: $135 If you’re familiar with Excel and are ready to build upon that knowledge, then this is the course for you. This course will focus on pivot tables, using formulas for (but not limited to) fnancial, lookup and reference, and math and trig. Students will also learn about conditional formatting, how to protect your spreadsheet from changes and how to create macros for repetitive work. Advance charting and forms for easy data entry will also be covered. The following Ed2Go computer courses will be held online. INTRODUCTION TO WINDOWS 10 Start dates: A new class will run every month with the frst beginning on September 15 Fee: $129 Welcome to Windows 10, the completely new operating system from Microsoft, which ofers a more robust, more powerful, and completely unique computing experience. In this course, you will gain the foundation you need to get started right away using Windows Fall 2021 15
COMMUNITY EDUCATION 10. File Explorer can help you manage your fles and create basic text documents using WordPad. From to fnding fles and folders, to organizing and editing photos, to managing fles on external drives, you will learn everything you need to know about getting the most from this operating system. And since security is important, you will also learn how to protect your fles, as well as how to protect and update Windows 10. Register for Introduction to Windows 10. INTRODUCTION TO EXCEL Start dates: A new class will run every month with the frst beginning on September 15 Fee: $129 Do you manage large sets of numbers, names, dates, or other pieces of information? If so, then you need to create worksheets to manage, store, organize, and even analyze this information. Excel, Microsoft’s powerful spreadsheet software, is the most widely-used program to handle this task. In fact, most workplaces require that new employees have a basic level of understanding of Microsoft Excel. Register for Introduction to Excel. INTRODUCTION TO POWERPOINT Start dates: A new class will run every month with the frst beginning on September 15 Fee: $129 This in-depth course introduces PowerPoint’s functions and will teach you how to plan and create professional-quality presentations. You will learn how to catch your audience’s attention with PowerPoint’s visual features like photo album.
