Summer Enrichment Courses Offered as a partnership between the Woodbridge Township School District and the Woodbridge Recreation Department This year, there are a variety of courses offered, including mostly in-person and one popular remote option, as indicated in course descriptions. Tuition amounts listed are per 5-day class for one student. The virtual instructor will communicate online meeting links prior to the course start. SPECIAL: VIRTUAL ONLY CLASS Week 1 – July 25-29 Imagine! Write! Publish! This class is designed to foster creativity, self-expression and excitement about the writing process using Bookemon to create a beautiful published book as a keepsake. Instructor: Mrs. Sweeney has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Literature & a Master’s Degree in Admin- istration & Supervision. She has been teaching in Woodbridge Township for 21 years, 13 years as a middle school language arts teacher, 2 years in high school English, and 6 years as a Gifted & Talented Enrichment teacher. Ms. Sweeney is also a mother to three sons, ages 10, 13 & 16. #001 AM session – entering Grades 2-7 Tuition: $125 (inclusive of published book) Maximum enrollment: 20 Week 1 – July 25-29, Avenel Middle School POPULAR Rise of the Robots!!! REGISTER COURSE! EARLY! Forget Battlebots! In this class you will build your own robots! Students will receive an introduction to Robot- ics. They will be using Lego Mindstorms NXT Robot kits to build and program robots to compete against oth- er students in races and other competitions. Students must bring an open and creative mind. May the best robot win! Instructor: Mr. Hoyer currently teaches Robotics at Woodbridge High School. He is in his 23rd year of teaching in Woodbridge Township. In addition to Robotics he has taught 7th Grade Life Science, 8th Grade Physical Science, Inte- grated Science, Earth Science, Oceanography and Astrono- my. #002 AM session – entering Grades 4-8 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20
Week 1 – July 25-29, Avenel Middle School Brilliant Brushes! Students will turn a blank canvas into a beautiful piece of art each day using acrylic paint. Specific exercises will be practiced to raise their level of painting skills as well as awareness of composition and color mix- ing. Beginners or those with experience will come away from this class with a strong understanding of how to construct a painting. All materials are included. Instructor: Mrs. Tobia has been an art educator for 17 years. She is currently the Gifted & Talented Art Teacher in the Woodbridge Township School District. This is her 3rd year as an instructor for Summer Enrichment. #003 AM session – entering Grades 4-7 Tuition: $125 (inclusive of art supplies) Maximum enrollment: 20 Canvas Kids! Painting is an ideal way to get creative, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced painter. Stu- dents will dive into color theory, composition and more by following a step by step procedure. Stu- dents will create several paintings during the course of the week. All materials are included. Instructor: Mrs. Tobia has been an art educator for 17 years. She is currently the Gifted & Talented Art Teacher in the Woodbridge Township School District. This is her 3rd year as an in- structor for Summer Enrichment. #004 PM session – entering Grades K-3 Tuition: $125 (inclusive of art supplies) Maximum enrollment: 20 Danspirations! “Danspirations” is for everyone who wants to move and groove! In this course, we will learn different styles of dance such as Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and more! Dancers will work together to create and perform choreogra- phy. The mission of this course is for students to make connections to the world around them to be the most confident version of themselves. We will play lots of movement games and explore the art form of dance. “Danspirations” will give your child the opportunity to express themselves through movement and to meet new friends along the way. If your child loves to dance and have fun, this course is for them! Instructor: Ms. Veglia teaches dance at Avenel, Fords & Woodbridge Middle Schools. Ms. Veglia earned her Master’s in Dance Education K-12 from the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers University. She earned her BFA in Dance Performance from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. Ms. Veglia loves to travel, spend time with family and friends, and, of course, she loves to DANCE! #005 AM session – entering Grades 3-5 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20
Week 1 – July 25-29, Avenel Middle School Ha Ha Made you Read!! My Weird School Camp Spend a week falling in love with reading and books as we explore author Dan Gutman’s popular & funny book series, My Weird School. Get hooked on books while having fun with friends. Camp activities will include literacy games & activities, reader’s theater, arts & crafts, and lots of READING and GIGGLING!! Students will even create their own mini My Weird School graphic novel. Instructor: Mrs. Timinski has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Teacher of the Handicapped and a Master ’s Degree in Educational Media Specialization. She has been a Special Education teacher in Woodbridge for over 20 years and is currently working as the District Media Specialist. Ms. Timinski is also a mother to 3 children, ages 30, 14, and 9. She loves to garden, read, and cud- dle with her puppies. #006 PM session – entering Grades 2-5 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Explore and Discover the World of Innovation Click here to check out Mrs. Azar's YouTube Playlist of past student-created inventions. Campers will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on invention challenges that promote STEAM skills and creative problem solving through the lenses of entrepreneur- ship and innovation. Campers will become more confident and persistent, while demon- strating creativity skills in an interactive and technologically advanced format. First time AND experienced inventors are welcome! You never know what you will create when you are given a little inspiration! Instructor: Mrs. Azar is currently the 4th and 5th grade Gifted & Talented Enrich- ment and PEG Math teacher in Woodbridge. She earned a Master's Degree in Curricu- lum and Instruction at the University of Connecticut, where she studied Gifted Education. Mrs. Azar loves in- corporating technology, teaching outside-the-box lessons, and encouraging students to create and follow through with goals. This is Mrs. Azar's 14th year teaching. A lover of sports, the beach, amusement parks, and learning new things, you can find Mrs. Azar going on adventures with family or listening to Podcasts. #007 AM session – entering Grades K-2 #008 PM session – entering Grades 3-6 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 25 iMovie Madness! Welcome to iMovie Madness! where we explore the (fade) ins and (fade) outs of the apple program iMovie. Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to shoot, edit, master, and share their iMovie crea- tions. Projects include a slide show project and a movie project. No experience needed, bring your director's chair and an idea! Instructor: Mr. Competello is the general music teacher/ choir director at Avenel Middle School. He received his BA in music education with a focus in conducting and composition at Kean University in 2015. He is also a member of "Little Kids Rock!" which trains music educators in using music kids love to teach them music! Mr. Competello is a tech guru at AMS and enjoys using technology to enhance instruction. #009 AM session – entering Grades 6-8 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 18
Week 1 – July 25-29, Avenel Middle School Singing Encanto! We don’t talk about Bruno, but we are sure going to sing about him! Do you love Encanto and want to sing, act and even dance to the amazing music by the great Lin-Manuel Miranda? Well, here is your chance! We are going to have a ton of summertime fun with Mr. Filoramo and his daughter Phoebe (the dancing queen) performing a mini-musical of Disney’s Encanto. Instructor: Mr. Filoramo has been teaching music since 1998 and holds a BA in music from Rutgers University and an MA in Music Education from Boston University. He teaches Elementary Vocal/General Mu- sic at Ross Street School in Woodbridge, NJ. His passion is sharing the joy of music to every student he has the privilege to teach with an “out-of-the-box” approach. He prides himself on doing the most original chorus concerts es- pecially at the elementary level and writing original songs to supplement instruction and school pride. He has been mar- ried to his wife Megan for 24 years and has 2 children, Da- mien & Phoebe. #010 AM session – entering Grades K-3 #011 PM session — entering Grades 4-8 Tuition: $100 Crafts for a Kind Community Crafting kindness has never been so much fun! In this class we'll dive into kindness-based stories and learn how to bring some of that kindness magic to our Woodbridge Community through creative fun. Bring your im- agination and your positive attitude because everything we do will be hands-on and FUN! Instructor: Ms. Plumeri graduated from Kean University with a degree in Elementary Education in 2011. She currently teaches 4th grade at Ross Street School and is a firm believer that her students can reach for the stars with the right support in place. #012 AM session – entering Grades K-4 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Career Play for Early Writing What's the best way to promote a positive writing experience? To jump on in and explore future careers! In this class, we'll explore different jobs through dramatic play. Students will learn about firefighters, chefs, as- tronauts, veterinarians and dentists! They will walk a mile in their shoes! Through crafts, literacy, drama and written reflection. Students will recognize their own strengths and interests while being immersed in their new roles. Instructor: Ms. Plumeri graduated from Kean University with a degree in Elementary Education in 2011. Week 1 – July 25-29, Avenel Middle School Back by Popular Demand Mr. O. the Science Pro’s Adventures in Physics! If you like science, this class is for you! You will build rockets that launch up to 200 ft in the air, race cars, cat- apults, space rovers, airplanes and more!!! If your seatbelt is not on yet you’d better buckle up! This class is going to be quite the ride! Each day we will be building a fun science project to take home! Friday we will launch our rockets and parents are welcome to come and watch! Can not wait to see you there! Instructor: Mr. Olvesen has a BS in Biology and a Masters in Educational Leadership and Supervi- sion. He teaches science at Woodbridge Middle School. In this class the activities we will be doing will involve math, science, engineering, and technology. These STEM activities are open ended and you’ll have the ability to solve or investigate different challenges and questions. This is a great way for students to build a love for learning, to explore, to learn, and to be creative over the summer! We will have a bridge building challenge, build a volcano, make a cata- pult, and many more! There’s no better way to get students’ minds thinking right before going back to school. Instructor: Ms. Sica grew up and attended school in Woodbridge Township. She feels lucky to teach elementary school in her hometown as well as to coach softball at Colonia High School. Ms. Sica earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and a master’s degree in Edu- cation K-6 with an endorsement for teaching students with disabilities from Monmouth University. She is looking forward to joining the Summer Enrichment team this year. #019 AM session – entering Grades 4-6 Tuition: $125 (inclusive of project materials) Maximum enrollment: 20 iMovie Madness! Week 2 – August 15-19, Avenel Middle School Literacy and Community Want to improve your reading, writing, and research skills AND make a difference in the lives of others? Through literacy activities and research-based lessons, students will learn about problems in the community and participate in related Service-learning projects. Each of us has the power to make a difference in the world through education and action. Join us for a week of spreading love and kindness while learning and having fun. Students will earn up to 5 hours of community service for participation in this course. This class will introduce students to the art of American Sign Lan- guage (ASL). They will learn through demonstration, self-practice, music, games, and through reading/signing stories. A Google Classroom will be set up to provide videos and supplemental posts to continue to practice at home. Instructor: Mrs. Miller teaches Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Life Skills at Colonia Middle School. She has been teaching for 17 years. Mrs. Miller took sign language courses as part of her bachelor’s degree and to get certified to teach Baby Signing classes. She also has a master’s degree in Reading Specialization. #022 PM session – entering Grades 1-3 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Be a Wildlife Biologist: Animal World Explorer Camp Stamp your young explorer’s passport to adventure and deepen their appreciation for the animal kingdom. Your child, and a group of fellow explorers, will embark on a week-long, global adventure to discover new sets of animals and habitats as a wildlife biologist. They will virtually travel to each continent to gather, ana- lyze, and interpret data on wildlife and habitats. Explorers will mark their experiences in their travel guide bro- chure! Instructor: Ms. Finnegan teaches Academic Support in Woodbridge Township School District. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Kean University and a Teacher of Students with Disabilities certificate from Rutgers University. Week 2 – August 15-19, Avenel Middle School Artists in Motion Intended for beginner and intermediate dancers who want to learn how to choreograph with their own style of dance. During the week, students will learn the basics of Jazz technique and tools to create their very own dance. Jazz technique is a combination of sharp and fluid movements done to popular music. The class will include body isolations, turning, jumping, and other technical steps. The second half of the course will focus on providing students with the resources to successfully choreograph their own dances, thus becoming an Artist in Motion. Instructor: Ms. Popino is a middle school dance teacher in Woodbridge Township School District. She earned a B.F.A. from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and her master’s degree in Dance Education from Rutgers Graduate School of Education. Ms. Popino studied abroad at the Aca- demia Dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy and interned at American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum. She is also a registered yoga and Pilates teacher. #025 AM session – entering Grades 6-8 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Creative Art Studio This class will learn about different techniques, tricks and uses of varied media as well as study their favorite artists and styles. Students will paint, draw, do printmaking, use pastels and much more! All materials included in this course. Instructor: Ms. Tobia has been an art educator for 17 years. She is currently the Gifted & Talented Art Teacher in the Woodbridge School Dis- trict. Discover Art Materials will have a daily focus on a new medium and fundamental skill of drawing or painting. Stu- dents will learn tips and tricks of how to work with each material, as well as have the chance to com- pare one medium to another. Instructor: Ms. Tobia has been an art educator for 17 years. She is currently the Gifted & Talented Art Teacher in the Woodbridge School Dis- trict. Week 2 – August 15-19, Avenel Middle School Pajama Party Musical It's time for bed - time to pick up our toys, take a bath, brush teeth and put PJs on to end the day. But wait! What's that noise I hear under my bed? Where's my teddy bear? See how bedtime can really be a blast in this creative and cozy 20- minute musical play for the primary grades. Students will learn and perform a show in one week’s time. They will get to wear pajamas, bring stuffed animals, and create a wonderful show. At the end of the week, students will get to put on a performance for their friends and family. Instructor: Ms. Avner is the general music/choir director at Oak Tree Road Elementary School. It is Ms. Avner’s passion to inspire young minds through music and performance. While teaching, Ms. Avner has directed many plays and musicals, such as the full production of Oliver, and has also led a multitude of choirs, with the addition of handbells. Ms. Avner looks for- ward to having the opportunity to give students an enriching summer music experience. #028 AM session – entering Grades K-4 Tuition: $100 Maximum enrollment: 20 Arf! The Musical Welcome to Doggie Town! What's not to love about a town full of pooches who all have talent to share and to spare? This is a musical with a strictly canine cast, well at least a cast that plays nothing but canines. The children get to perform the show from a dog's perspective and feel the thrills of competing in a dog pageant. Arf! is based off the Westminster Dog Show in New York City. For the class, please have your child bring pants/shorts and a shirt in the colors of tan, white, gray, black, or red. Any choice of those colors will work. They will also need a pair of white socks. Stu- dents will learn and perform a show in a week’s time. At the end of the week, students will get to put on a performance for their friends and family.
