DAY 1 Sunday 21st February, 2021 MELBOURNE TO ALBURY There’s a tap on the door this morning from our chauffeur who’s here to take us to join our O’Shannessy’s Quality Tours coach and crew for our 9 day tour to explore the footsteps of our pioneers. Meeting new friends and old, we travel via Healesville to Lake Eildon for our morning tea break. We take a drive over the dam wall before continuing past Lake Nillahcootie – we have a brief stop here as there are great views of the Lake. Our late lunch is in Benalla today. This afternoon, we continue our journey through to Albury for our first night on tour. There’ll be plenty of time to settle in before dinner . OVERNIGHT: Best Western Plus Hovell Tree, ALBURY DAY 2 Monday 22nd February, 2021 ALBURY TO GOULBURN After breakfast we continue north to Adelong, a little village of 900 people and a main street classified by the National Trust. We visit the Adelong Alive Museum and we also see the Adelong Falls and Gold Mill Reserve for a fascinating look at some of the ruins from an early gold rush. From here we make our way to Yass where we have planned a visit to the fascinating Cooma Cottage. Now a National Trust property, it started life as an 1830’s bungalow, but was soon embellished with expansive Palladian-style wings, the creation of its owner-builder, the eccentric explorer Hamilton Hume. The stable, which appears to be based on a pattern book design, is one of the most charming rural outbuildings to be seen anywhere. OVERNIGHT: Best Western Plus, GOULBURN
DAY 3 Tuesday 23rd February, 2021 GOULBURN TO WISEMANS FERRY On the road again and we stop for our morning break in Berrima. From here we continue to Camden to visit Belgenny Farm established in 1805 by John and Elizabeth Macarthur. The Macarthur’s pioneered Merino wool production, wheat growing, dairying, horticulture and grape growing at Belgenny. Our tour of this historic property, conducted by the Friends of Belgenny, includes lunch and some free time in the souvenir shop. This afternoon, we drive through Narrellan to Wisemans Ferry. Our accommodation at Retreat at Wisemans is a fantastic place to stay. Nestled on the banks of the Hawkesbury River the hotel is surrounded by 50 acres of beautiful grounds containing a golf course, games room and swimming pool. It will be our base for the next three nights. OVERNIGHT: Retreat at Wisemans Ferry, WISEMANS FERRY
DAY 4 Wednesday 24th February, 2021 WISEMANS FERRY We have a leisurely day today and following breakfast we are joined by a local historian who will take us back in time through the rich history of this area. We now have an optional morning activity to the Convict Trail with our guide – this tour will take us over the river aboard the ferry to the Great North Road Convict Trail, a monument to former felons and a tribute to their work building vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges. For those who choose not to take this tour, we are free to explore Wisemans Ferry. It is a quaint little village set alongside the Hawkesbury. Lunch today is a BBQ around the pool. A couple of minutes from our motel is a lovely gallery, Ferry Artists Inc. that provides a varied and unique display of art from local artists. Located just across the road from our motel is the Wisemans Ferry Bowling Club – there is the opportunity during the day to get a few teams together for a game of Barefoot Bowls. Maybe some of us would just like to relax around the pool with an occasional “dip”. We can do as much or as little as we please – a totally relaxing day! OVERNIGHT: Retreat at Wisemans Ferry, WISEMANS FERRY “... The Convict Trail is well laid out with sculptures and interesting historical information along the way …” tripadvisor
DAY 5 Thursday 25th February, 2021 ST ALBANS AND WINDSOR Today we venture north, across the main ferry to the tiny village of St Albans. Our first stop is St Joseph's Church. We also have a look at the cemetery – a large group of early settlers are buried here, including William Douglas, a first fleeter. There are roughly 60 headstones still standing and some of the inscriptions are fascinating! We stop for morning tea at the historic Settlers Inn, established in 1836, and built from convict - hewn sandstone. Of Georgian simplicity, the hotel became a stopover for Cobb and Co. stagecoaches travelling between Sydney and Newcastle in the nineteenth century. Late morning we backtrack over the river and drive to Windsor where we’ll join the Hawkesbury Paddlewheeler for a luncheon cruise on the peaceful and tranquil Hawkesbury River. Back on dry land, we pick up a local expert and explore the historic sites of Windsor, Wilberforce, Pitt Town and Ebenezer. We will drive through picturesque rural farmlands to the first Hawkesbury Valley settlement site (1794), St Matthew's Anglican Church, Ebenezer Church and Tebbutt's Observatory. OVERNIGHT: Retreat at Wisemans Ferry, WISEMANS FERRY
DAY 6 Friday 26th February, 2021 WISEMANS FERRY TO BATEMANS BAY We farewell our hosts this morning and venture to Tobruk Sheep Station, set on over 150 acres (70 hectares) on a high plateau above the Hawkesbury River. The property – one of the most beautiful and authentic properties in the area, is surrounded by state forests and bushland, with amazing views to the Blue Mountains. On arrival we will be met by a stockman on horseback and then assembled at the Drovers Camp for billy tea and damper. Then, for the rest of the morning, we will enjoy mustering, watching the sheep dogs work, shearing and a wool room talk on one of Australia’s biggest and oldest industries. Following lunch we head around the outskirts of Sydney to Batemans Bay. We’ll arrive into our hotel a little later today, but have a very leisurely day in the area tomorrow. OVERNIGHT: Sunseeker Motor Inn, BATEMANS BAY DAY 7 Saturday 27th February, 2021 BATEMANS BAY A local expert joins us today to show us the sights and tell us about the history of Batemans Bay. After our tour, we board the “MV Merinda” and enjoy the uninterrupted views of the unspoilt Clyde River, bush and mountain scenery with interesting commentary and our fish and chip lunch. At Nelligen we have time to stretch our legs before we rejoin our vessel for the return journey. We then make the short trip to the privately owned Mogo Zoo. The Zoo is passionate about the conservation of endangered species and believes that through education, combined with its involvement in various global breeding programs, they can make a difference to the world's threatened species. OVERNIGHT: Sunseeker Motor Inn, BATEMANS BAY
DAY 8 Sunday 28th February, 2021 BATEMANS BAY TO LAKES ENTRANCE We begin our journey home today, driving to the National Trust Protected village of Tilba. Many of the original timber buildings have been retained and restored, while any new buildings have been built in the character and style of the era. Mount Dromedary, which was named by Captain Cook because of its unusual shape, overshadows the town. We’ll pop into the Tilba Real Dairy to taste some of their produce before travelling through to Eden, an old whaling town which still has strong links with the sea. After lunch here we take a short drive to Boydtown. Benjamin Boyd, the son of a London Banker established Boydtown at Twofold Bay in the mid 1800’s as his headquarters from where he ran his whaling and grazing exploits. Boyd had grandiose ideas of developing Boydtown to a stage not only to rival nearby Eden but Sydney itself. His grand plans never eventuated and the only buildings erected were the Seahorse Inn, the Lookout Tower and Boyd’s Church. Continuing on we travel through Orbost to Lakes Entrance. OVERNIGHT: Bellevue on the Lakes, LAKES ENTRANCE
DAY 9 Monday 1st March, 2021 LAKES ENTRANCE TO MELBOURNE For anyone who would like to stretch their legs before breakfast, a stroll along the esplanade which will reveal some unique wooden sculptures. A local wood carver has taken the stumps of trees and carved them into images of Australia at War. We travel to Sale where we take a “Port of Sale” tour – how interesting this area is. We have lunch here before continuing on home to Melbourne. At the conclusion of our tour, no need for a taxi or lift, we will be chauffeur driven home.
