News & Announcements WOW to study “With” by Skye Jethani in Fall 2021 Over a ten week period, on Wednesday mornings from September 15 through November 17, Women of the Word will study and discuss “With: Reimagining the Way You Relate to God” by Skye Jethani. With explores the narrative of the Bible to show that we were created to be with God, and that restoring this connection is his mission. Instead of life over, under, from, or even for God. What leads us into freedom and restoration is life with God. A life lived in rich communion with God cultivates faith, hope, and love in a way that transforms both us and the broken world we inhabit. Our study will include recommendations for how to practice communion with God, including three helpful practices. • Life From God – “People in this category want God’s blessings, but they are not particularly interested in God himself” • Life Over God – “The mystery and wonder of the world is lost as God is abandoned in favor of proven formulas and controllable outcomes.” • Life For God – “The most significant life ... is the one expended accomplishing great things in God’s service” • Life Under God – “Sees God in simple cause-and-effect terms – we obey his commands and he blesses our lives, our families, our nation” • Life With God – “Goal is not to use God, its goal is God” Week 1 Life After Eden September 15 Week 2 Life Under God September 22 Week 3 Life Over God September 29 Week 4 Life From God October 6 Week 5 Life For God October 13 Week 6 Life With God October 20 Week 7 Life With Faith October 27 Week 8 Life With Hope November 3 Week 9 Life With Love November 10 Week 10 Communing With God November 17 Order your book from Amazon or your favorite book distributor in whatever format you choose. Please register for “With” at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19x7V93hcnz_CdtckPSXB4-XoiTtNlZxh1IEFEZg7jcQ The Worship Committee is looking for sound system monitors! These volunteers have been behind the scenes with their headsets for years, making certain mics are connected and there is balance for the speakers and musicians in our Sanctuary and Upper Room services. As we are readying ourselves to return to our beautiful worship spaces, we need many to assist in the smooth transition and moving forward with both services. We are looking for folks with a desire to be of assistance in this area of sound monitoring and volunteer in a rotation once a month during the service of your choice. Training will be provided. If you're interested or know someone who might be, phone Teri Stonerook at 734-454-7591 or email terisue0419@aol.com. 4

We are so grateful to our FPCP family for their support, love and prayers as DeJuan faced many hurdles while accomplishing this goal. Having the support of our church made all the difference. News & Announcements Building and Grounds – Did You Know? For the past 3 years Building and Grounds has been quite busy with large, well-publicized projects such as the boiler replacement, water heater replacement, concrete replacement in the Columbarium, and the Phase II HVAC ugrade. Did you know that during this same time we have also been converting our old, inefficient incandescent and fluorescent lighting to the newer and more efficient LED bulbs and fixtures, including our emergency lighting and emergency exit sign lighting? FPCP’s pursuit of energy efficiency began years ago when FPCP first installed compact fluorescent lights (CFL) and motion sensors in some of the rooms and stairways. Since that time, we have replaced our two, 1.4M BTU boilers with two, 1.0M BTU 93% efficient (high efficiency) boilers, our hot water tank has been replaced with a high efficiency hot water tank, and our new HVAC units have higher Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) as defined by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute in its 2008 standard AHRI 210/240. The critical component that ties our heating and cooling systems together and increases our energy efficiency is the building management system. This combination of a hardware and software system allows us to set temperatures in rooms that are defined as “occupied” or “unoccupied” and switch to more energy efficient temperature settings when the building is not in use during holidays or overnight hours. As a bonus, both DTE and Consumers Energy have given FPCP rebates for our energy efficient equipment and lighting. FPCP is 186 years old and steeped in tradition, but has always been forward-thinking in terms of our obligation to our congregation and to our local and worldwide community. Keep Plymouth Leafy Kelly O’Donnell and her family are members of our congregation here at FPCP. Kelly, in addition to running her own consulting business, is also the initiating and driving force behind Keep Plymouth Leafy, a non-profit organization based in Plymouth. A few years ago, Kelly was concerned that large mature trees in Plymouth were being cleared as old homes were demolished and new ones built on the same sites. Her concern added to her sense of a personal call to care for God’s creation. She and her neighbors attended City Commission meetings but found that action to stop or discourage the cutting of trees was moving slowly. Kelly and the KPL group then went in another direction with the same goal: preserving the overall canopy of trees in the city by making new trees available to homeowners. The group, with Kelly as a founding member, raised funds and found grants to support their efforts. Now, in cooperation with city government, they have planted 360 trees along streets and in parks around the city. Homeowners are encouraged to apply to the “Street Tree Program” for access to the trees and to have them planted in their treelawn (aka berm). https://keepplymouthleafy.org/ There is also a Facebook page with up-to-date announcements and opportunities to get involved. KPL has also sponsored a city wide tree survey where volunteers walked along all residential streets in the city, noting species, diameter, and conditions of existing trees, and also noting where there are openings ready to receive new trees. The city is using that information as a database to describe where attention is needed to maintain and improve the overall health and appearance of our tree canopy in Plymouth. Kelly sees the future as ripe for planting many more trees, both native and non- native, in our city. 7
