ABOUT US Our mission is to inspire creativity. Founded in 1974 in a converted naval munitions plant, Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest number of publicly accessible working artist studios under one roof. Each year, more than a half-million national and international visitors pass through the doors to meet artists, participate in creative events, and appreciate art exhibitions. With more than 165 resident artists in 82 studios on three floors, there is always something new to see and experience. This annual exhibition spotlights new talent and innovators of the D.C. metropolitan region. 2019 Emerging Artists are: Kate Gorman, Kim Work from the Art Center’s 2018 Post-Grad Residents: Alexis Gomez, Kelly Johnston, Lyric Sandara, Madeline A. Interdisciplinary artist Julia Kwon creates paintings, sculpture, and textile art Explore how rituals are an intrinsic part of the human experience. Through personal daily that explore reductive representation, othering, and objectification, particularly in relation to habits, individual quirks, broader cultural formalities, and religious ceremonies, this group ethnicity and gender. Kwon was chosen from nearly 130 applicants from across North America. exhibition addresses the universality of rituals. 2019 POST-GRAD RESIDENCY This competitive juried residency supports artists who recently earned a graduate or undergraduate degree in Fine Art. Residents have space to define their practices outside of an academic context. They learn to create and sell work, interact with the public, and build a network of artists and patrons.
