Park District News Bee-N-Bee Hotels at the Hoffman Park Community Gardens Next time you visit the Community Gardens at Hoffman Park, look for the Bee-N-Bee hotels! This wonderful addition to the gardens is by Sarah Michalak, a local Girl Scout who developed a conservation/preservation project to help solitary bees. Working with Park District staff and volunteer gardeners, she selected a nice location at the Give Back Gardens where the bee hotels could be observed and the bee’s natural work could also help veggie production. These Bee-N-Bee hotels cater to mason bees, who are not known as well as the famous honey bee. These bees live their whole life without a colony situation and look for natural features, hollow reeds, and stems to lay their eggs. This conservation effort is meant to bolster the local mason bees as they are great pollinators in our natural and agricultural environments. Thank you to Sarah Michalak for her conservation/pres- ervation project and her hard work and dedication on building and providing the Bee-N-Bee hotels. This has been a wonderful conservation partnership opportunity. In Memoriam: Dr. Wayne Schennum The Cary Park District lost a dear friend, Dr. Wayne Schennum, who passed away in August. Wayne was a conservationist, biologist, ecologist and naturalist. He also was the site steward for the Carl & Claire Marie Sands Main Street Prairie Nature Preserve for the past six years. Prior to becoming the site steward Wayne had spent his time at Sands Main Street collecting data on all types of plant and insect species located within the prairie. This work was instrumental in helping the Cary Park District develop a 10 year Vegetation Man- agement and Enhancement Plan for the entire 80 acre site. Wayne also donated his time to be on site during a Phase 1 Ar- cheological survey conducted at Sands Main Street Prairie. The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission required a trained botanist to be on site during archaeology work to ensure that shovel probes would not adversely impact the high-quality gravel prairie. Wayne graciously donated his time to fill that role in order for the survey to proceed. Wayne worked side by side with the team to ensure that no threatened or endangered prairie plants were harmed or excessive soil was disturbed. 3
