Slow Food

Slow Food started out almost thirty years ago in Piedmont. Despite the expo-
nential rowth of members worldwide and the huge spread of Carlo Petrini’s ideas,
its headquartes remain in Bra, a small Piedmontese town. Its heart still beats in
Piedmont and the first events were centred on the wine of this region. Slow Food
believes that wine, just as with food, must be “good, clean, and fair”—not just
good. Wine is an agricultural product, just like any of the foods we eat, and has
an impact on the lives of the people who produce it, as well as on the environ-
ment—through pesticides, herbicides and excessive water consumption which
are all commonplace in conventional wine production.

Slow Wine

The annual Slow Wine guide, published by Slow Food Editore, adopts a new
approach to wine criticism: not only reviews and organoleptic descriptions but
a real wine storytelling where the deep and direct knowledge of the wine com-
panies is the one and only protagonist. We visit all cellars and take into consid-
eration the wine quality, adherence to terroir, value for money and give greater
weight and importance to the estates’ production methods. Through the guide
and international tour we support and promote small-scale Italian winemakers
who are using traditional techniques, working with respect for the environment,
and safeguarding the incredible biodiversity of grape varieties that are part of
Italy’s heritage.

I Vini del Piemonte

I Vini del Piemonte is a consortium of promotion that includes some 200 Pied-
montese wine companies. The aim is to promote and communicate in the best
way possible the richness and peculiarities of the different Piedmontese wine
designations.
Every year, the consortium organizes more than 30 promotional initiatives in dif-
ferent countries around the world.

tervene as little as possible in the winemaking process so that

Year by year, Alessandro Cutolo’s cellar reveals itself to be on
of the most interesting in the denomination for its ability to
turn out reliable, terroir-based wines. And also because it has
never rested on its laurels, despite the great commercial for-

tires of seeking out new challenges, like the one he addressed
two years ago, when he abandoned wood for cement and be-
gan producing a white from macerated grapes.

The story of this winery began in Brescia in the 1940s, when
Andrea Pasini opened a trattoria in the city: serving at the ta-
bles, his love of wine grew to the point that in the late 1950s
he decided to start producing himself and bought some ter-
rains. The family eventually moved to their present home in
the San Giovanni farmhouse in 1977. Today the winery is run
by the third generation of the family with Luca as production
manager, Paolo as sales manager, Sara in admin, and Laura as

The Pantaleone family has approached wine prudently and
gradually with a firm belief in organic methods and the expres-
sivity of their highland terroir. Father Nazzareno set out with
only a few vine rows but now the family own 40 acres of land
planted to vine. Their work is based on union, idea-sharing and
the care and attention that they–Nazzareno, Federica, Fran-
cesca and her husband Giuseppe Infriccioli–dedicate to every
detail, taking one step at a time but growing at a rate of knots.

Agricolavinica was established in 2007 with the aim of devel-
oping a full project for organic farming and eco-sustainable
development of a territory whereas long time abandoned lands
and vineyards with ancient documented vocation were suitable
to produce excellent vegetables, fruit and wine. The idea spar-
kled from the collaboration and natural ideals shared by the
owner Rodolfo Gianserra and Giuseppe Tudino, the compa-
     ny’s administrator.

Irreverent and ironic, a custodian of the land and traditions of
Friuli, Pierluigi Zamò never ceases to amaze us. When he went
to study in the Langa district of Piedmont in 1968 he was so
bowled over by the goodness and longevity of Barolo that when
he returned to Manzano, he decided to start making wine him-

Eataly group acquired an interest, has begun to export globally.

In 1877 the Moscone family started up a wine-producing busi-

the soil and the grapes found in the Langhe region. Over the
years and thanks to the family’s dedication, the business proved

At Montoni, each and every organism first expresses itself by
listening to the voice of Mother Nature. She leads. Rigid and

If the genuine Langa rural spirit survives today it’s thanks to
families like this one–close-knit, cheerful and friendly–who
work the land with dedication, common sense and a desire to
improve. But without every betraying their origins. The vine-
yards are situated around the farmhouse, where Bricco Cara-
melli, planted way back in 1952 is the highest, at an altitude of
1,400 feet. Slightly lower down, Piano delli Perdoni was planted
partly in 1967, the year in which the family bought the farm-
     house.

Montenidoli has defined the quality of Vernaccia di San Gimi-
gnano thanks to the sensibility of Elisabetta Fagiuoli who listens
to the land as a whole before interpreting it. Today the cellar
is a point of reference for the consistency of its viticulture, its
commitment to promoting land-rooted wines, and the charis-
ma of Elisabetta herself, whose wines are well known the world
over. The vineyards fit into a magnificent natural context that
Elisabetta has venerated and respected ever since she arrived,
     in 1965.

Pian delle Querci is a family concern with a very experienced
vine-dresser like Vittorio Pinti. It is situated on the hills near
Montalcino and grows its vineyards in a mixed clay soil, very
rich in loam skeletal, at an average height of 250 metres above
sea level. In the cellar no kind of leaven is used, the controlled
fermentations are very long and made in stainless steel vats,
then wine is put in 50 hectolitre barrels in oak from Slavonia.

Soil is a living system. We believe that a vibrant, emphatically
alive place is the defining foundation of terroir. We have grown
to understand that most practices accepted as sustainable are
actually quite destructive to the life of the soil and to the char-
acter of the vineyard. We have forged a new system of wine
growing we call Grazing-Based Viticulture. Through this par-
adigmatic shift in philosophy, we seek new answers to an age-
old question: What endows a particular site with its personality,
its soul, its terroir? Certainly, it can’t be the mathematic ratios
of nutrients and minerals relayed in the results on a lab report.
