To think critically, reason wisely and act humanely. To appreciate complexity and difference and embrace new ways of knowing. This is the Wells experience.

The Wells experience is deeply personal and intensely focused on superior academic achievement. Virtually every course is taught by scholars who are recognized experts in their fields. Wells is a small college. Our size keeps us strong, allowing us to concentrate our academic resources on the growth potential of each individual. With one professor for every nine students, professors really get to know everyone. Profile Chris VanWert Physics and Mathematics Chris wants to smash atoms in Switzerland. Switzerland because that’s where the world’s largest particle physics lab is located. Smash atoms because, well, can you imagine anything more interesting? Chris, a student from Oswego, NY, is set on a career in research. And he has no doubt he’ll take classes in Switzerland because Wells is totally supportive. “My professors are talking about it already. I know everyone at Wells will do everything possible to help me study abroad.” Sounds like you’re convinced Wells is the place for you. It is. I didn’t want to be in lecture halls with 500 other students looking at a professor projected on a screen. That doesn’t happen at Wells. It definitely doesn’t. My average class has nine students. I’m on a first-name basis with my professors. They’re always available and I can talk about anything with them. So the “small by design” concept is right for you. Yes. I wanted more attention. I know, that sounds selfish. But I wanted a place where I could understand the building blocks of math and physics. This is the perfect place. Ever feel pressured because of the small classes? Yes, but it’s a good pressure. It’s motivating and it leads to very interesting discussions. You can’t hide. You can’t be lazy. But your professors know you personally, so they know when you’re having a bad day. They won’t put you on the spot. What else do you like about Wells? Being able to trust everyone. I can leave my shaving kit in the bathroom and it won’t go anywhere. The Honor Code is taken very seriously and part of that is because we really are a family here. When Henry Wells founded the College, he wanted it to feel like home, and 138 years later it still does. What do you do when you’re not studying? Swimming. I practice every day. The sports program is competitive, but very accepting and supportive. That’s Wells.
THE ACADEMIC SUPERLATIVE Wells students love to learn. It really is that simple. If you have a curiosity that won’t quit, you’ll fit right in. If you enjoy theoretical discussions that last long into the night, you’ll find plenty of people to keep you company. And if you’re willing to work harder than you’ve ever worked before, you’ll excel. You’ll find a supportive academic environment here. Our faculty members hold the highest degrees in their fields from some of the most prestigious universities in the world. You might study ecosystems in Australia’s Outback or work in labs, film studios or research hospitals anywhere in the world. We work with affiliated institutions to make sure your learning opportunities are as rich and varied as possible. For example, if you find the perfect course at Cornell University or the London School of Economics, we’ll do our best to make it happen. Cornell Engineering Affiliation This program is an excellent way to combine the benefits of a liberal arts college with those of a leading research university. Ithaca College Affiliation Wells has a cross-registra- tion agreement with Ithaca College. Our students may take a total of four courses at Ithaca in areas that enhance their studies. 6 Many of the sciences classes use our natural surroundings for a classroom. Students work with professors on research projects, gathering data in the field and using the findings for classroom discussion.
A s you develop your personal curriculum, you’ll find that Wells doesn’t set limits on learning. We offer an extraordinary range of options. Profile Meghan Hawley Economics and Management Meghan says she should be the official spokesperson for experiential learning. During her first year at Wells, she attended a conference on women and public policy in Washington, D.C. Later, as a Henry Wells Scholar, Meghan worked side by side with the manager of a retail coffee shop. She focused on Spanish culture during a semester at the University of Sevilla. She even took a semester off to work on a voter registration program during the presidential campaign. Despite missing that semester, Meghan stayed on track to graduate because Wells faculty and staff helped redesign her curriculum. “By being flexible and supportive, Wells helped me connect again and again, in a meaningful way, with the outside world. It doesn’t get better than that.” When you first arrived at Wells, how long did it take you to feel comfortable? A day. That long? The first day of orientation we felt like we already knew one another, and that’s despite the fact that we were all very different people. My senior year my roommates and I were really close, but one was sort of a homecoming queen, one was a Lord of the Rings freak, and I was into business and politics. I don’t think there’s any way we would even have been friends in high school. But there’s none of that cliquiness at Wells. As an alumna looking back, can you put the Wells experience into a few words? There’s a focus on community, an appreci- ation of the individual and a balance between the two. Within that environment, Wells is all about learning, and the learning often takes place in non-traditional ways. I guess I’d say Wells teaches not only subject matter, but life itself. Would you call that academic excellence taken to the next level? Sure, but I never felt burdened by the workload or the internships or studying off campus because support was always there. Every professor had an open-door policy. If I needed to, I could have made an appointment with the president. I don’t think students at most other colleges could say that. What else is unique about Wells? History is all around. We all felt connected to that history through our traditions, which are very strong at Wells. My first year I was a little cynical about, I don’t know, dancing around the maypole, singing in the dining hall. But I discovered that these traditions really do bond us together. Nothing gives you a better sense of belonging than acting like fools once in awhile. What’s your favorite thing about Wells? Tea time. No, really. Every afternoon there’s a break, fifteen minutes or so, and everyone in a building, students and professors, heads for the cookies, fruit, tea, whatever. It may seem like a little thing, but tea time embodies the faculty/ student relationship. We talked with our professors, asked students in other classes for advice…it was relaxed and fun. It’s learning and living in a community, which again is what Wells is all about.
THE VIBRANT EDUCATION 6 Hands on—that’s what experiential learning is all about. It’s doing what’s being taught. You have to buy into the concept to be at Wells. It’s discussions, to dissections, to dissertations. Dive in!
Wells College is your base camp, a stepping-off point to a world of unlimited adventure. Does that seem like a stretch? It really isn’t, because your Wells education won’t stop at the edge of the campus. Since 1868, we’ve been encouraging our students to step outside the classroom. Why? Because the best education combines traditional studies with immersive real-world experiences. Last year, the Wells Office of Career Services coordinated internships in twenty states, the District of Columbia, France and Senegal. By graduation, over 85% of seniors had completed at least one internship. Depending on your goals and interests, you might discuss an economic theory at Wells, then watch it in action at a Wall Street investment firm. Follow the trail of a new species of spider from a Wells biology lab to Australia’s Outback. Serve as an intern for a Member of Parliament while taking courses at Oxford. Extraordinary projects and internships like these will inspire you forever and vastly enrich your academic experience. Most of the majors at Wells require experiential work for credit. Your professors and the career development staff work closely with you to make sure your off-campus studies are a good fit for your aspirations. This careful attention to each student’s specific requirements shows the intensely personal and in-depth academic focus of the Wells experience. And just as we provide scholarships for academics, we also make funds available to support experiential learning. Many colleges restrict internships to juniors and seniors. We don’t. Almost as soon as you get here, you’ll be asked to think about leaving to take on a job or project somewhere else. Top Ten Favorite Recent Internships 1. The American Center 6. Sure, sharing ideas with people you barely know and bumping up against new ideas in a foreign setting can be a little intimidating. But experiential learning focuses your mind, teaches skills you wouldn’t develop anywhere else, and kicks your perceptions up a notch. In four years at Wells, you’ll develop an impressive resume that puts you ahead of most other college graduates. If your goal is to pursue graduate studies after college, you’ll be right on track. And you’ll have a head start in the real world which is, after all, where you’ll spend the rest of your life. Profile M. Muin Uddin, Ph.D. Professor of Economics and Herbert J. Charles and Florence Charles Faegre Professor of International Relations When Professor Uddin applied for a position at Wells, he wasn’t absolutely sure it was the right place for him. He knew the College had an excellent reputation, but he wondered if Wells might be a little too unique. If the chemistry wasn’t right, he might not be there long. He needn’t have worried. “Every day that went by I came to like Wells more and more. Now I’m so attached to this institution and the people who live and work here!” Today, fifteen years after he signed on, the staff and students find it hard to imagine Wells College without Professor Uddin. When you arrived at Wells, what was the first clue that you’d made the right choice? You walk by an office and people wave. That happened immediately. It didn’t take long for Wells to feel like home. The atmosphere here is one where you can really enjoy working. Also, of course, the campus is beautiful. What about Wells’ size? It’s as if you’re working as part of a family. The smallness encourages a close working interaction between students and faculty that you can’t achieve at other places. I used to work at a college where I would just lecture, sometimes to hundreds of students. You didn’t like that? No, because I had little idea how individ- ual students were doing. At Wells, I closely monitor each student’s studies. I know their strengths and weaknesses and, most important, I know when they’re capable of doing better. I can support them and help them move in the direction of their full potential. The focused attention of professors helps students excel. Definitely. We send students to grad school at a very high rate. But whether they go to grad school or not, our students leave here with a great sense of accomplishment. That accomplishment, I feel it, too, because I get to know them the first year and see them grow year after year. It’s very gratifying. Do you see experiential learning as an important part of the curriculum? There’s no question about that. A lot of places, you do your coursework and you’re done. Not here. Our seminar-style classes make both students and professors work very hard. When they take off-campus internships, they turn those jobs into credit-bearing work. Students do original research, often producing a quality of work that’s graduate level. The truth is I learn just as much, if not more, from my students as I do from my own studies. How do you relax away from campus? I work all the time. No, seriously, I have a 3-year-old granddaughter. Her name is Zainab. She lights me up.
LIFE ON THE LAKE The bell in the Main Tower rings, inviting students to dinner as it has since the late 1800s. Young women and men sit at long pine tables in a Tudor-style great hall. They eat and talk. It’s obvious that talking is more important than eating. Even a casual observer can see that there’s way more sincerity than cynicism, more enthusiasm than angst in this hall. For sure, no one looks bored. One student shares her excitement about the zebra mussels she’s collected for a research project. Another student talks about his work in the Wells Book Arts Center, where he is learning to make books the way they were made four hundred years ago. A third student explains how the exchange program works at the London School of Economics. What kind of a place is this? It’s a place where everyone knows everyone. Where the Honor Code is taken very seriously. Where a senior will ask a first-year student, “How are things going?” and really want to know the answer. 6 This is Faculty Parlors but, as you can see, it’s not just for faculty. Throughout the campus, there are elegant and comfortable places to gather together or simply to gather one’s thoughts.
A grand Tudor dining hall, an eclectic gallery, and an interfaith chapel serve food for the body, mind and spirit. Each within a minute from each other. 6 In some ways, Wells is a contradiction: a college in an intimate, natural setting that welcomes the outside world in while encouraging its students to go out and explore. It’s a small place because small works so well. It’s the kind of place where each year, on the first day of school, the staff and faculty and students gather in front of Main Building after dark. Candles are lit, the Alma Mater is sung, and then the seniors run across the lawn and jump into Cayuga Lake. For everyone there, it’s fun—and funny—and a deeply moving experience. Wells is more than a college. It’s a family. Students think of it as home. Alumnae/i never really leave. Profile Hon. Renee Forgensi Minarik ’80 Judge of the New York State Court of Claims If it weren’t for a pile of leaves, Renee might never have become a Wells student. “I went to visit the campus on a crisp fall day. On the path between Macmillan and the library, there was a big pile of freshly raked leaves and some girls were running through it, laughing and shouting. They noticed me and asked how I was doing. They were clearly having a great time, and they sincerely wanted to include me. I’d say that was the moment I decided to go to Wells.” You felt at home from the moment you stepped on campus? I really did. I think you go to Wells because you’re attracted by the beauty, the architecture, the tranquility. You think, this is what college is supposed to be, a place where I can study, read, write—and, oh yeah, it looks like fun, too. But then you stay at Wells because you realize the staff and faculty are really preparing you to face the challenges ahead. Academic challenges? More than that. The style of teaching is different at Wells, and the professors are amazing. They gave me the basic skillsets I needed to take every course and do every job I’ve had in my career. When I went to law school, I had no qualms about raising my hand the first day. The professors at Wells gave me the confidence to jump right in and participate, because that’s what you do at Wells. You have to participate because classes are small. Right. At Wells small doesn’t mean they take you by the hand and spoon-feed you. It means you can’t hide. And it means if you want help and ask for it, there’s no question you’ll get all the help you need. Would you say Wells teaches you how to learn? Yes, you learn how to find the information you need to solve problems throughout your whole life. You also learn how important it is to have the support of your friends and professors. Naturally my friends and I have been through all kinds of life-altering experiences and things we learned at Wells—about working together, sharing what we know and supporting people who need help—are still with us 25 years later. What else has stayed with you? My senior year I had a seminar in English history. There were just three of us in the class, which lasted all afternoon. Three of us and one professor for three hours so, man, you better be prepared. It was exciting, you know? And that material stuck with me. To this day, I love reading about Henry VIII.
THE FIELDS OF PLAY Whether you’re working on your senior project or taking a shot on goal in a soccer match, it’s good to “sweat it.” Intercollegiate athletics at Wells demand grit and a winning attitude.
