Welcome to the Spring Conference Words from the Presidents Welcome to the 2018 MCTM/MinnMATYC Spring Conference! Our theme for this year Building an Equitable Community: Teachers connecting with... • Teachers • Technology • Each and Every Learner • Effective Practices • Leaders According to one definition, Building Community is a field of practice directed toward creation or en- hancement of community among individuals within a regional area. In our case this weekend, we wish to build community within our mathematics faculty (K-16) by connecting through all these five listed items, within our state of Minnesota and beyond. We encourage each of you to use your time to attend as many sessions as you can during our two days together. Build community with other teachers, try out new technology, prepare yourself to teach each and every learner by learning from effective practices of other faculty, and become leaders for other teachers and students. There is always something new to learn. Use the time to network with other educators. We know this is a vital part of this conference, simply connect- ing with those we have not seen from the previous year, whether it be from the K-12 schools or our community colleges. Remember to welcome those who might be attending our conference for the first time. Some of us may be so familiar with the DECC that we might forget what it is like to be a first time attendee. That bit of help or advice we can give someone just starting out on this wonderful journey will appreciate what support we can help them continue on the path. This year we welcome Atlas/ABE (Adult Basic Education) to our MCTM/MinnMATYC conference. They will be sharing their expertise in sessions during the conference that apply to many mathematics classrooms. Please make them feel welcome to our wonderful conference. The more we can learn and share with each other, the better we can be for educators and students. We hope that you will find each and every session that you attend interesting and helpful in some way. The plan- ning committee has taken a lot of time in preparing for a well rounded conference, so be sure to thank those who have spent many hours before and during the conference to make your stay enjoyable. And remember “ What Happens In Duluth, Goes Back to the Classroom!!” Emily Larsen Mel Taylor MCTM President MinnMATYC President 2
