What employers are looking for… ____ E mployers assume that a graduate with a law degree will have the necessary legal knowledge and skills. However, research indicates most employers (not just the legal profession) also want a range of other skills, including: ✓ The ability to work well on a team and fit the firm's culture ✓ The capacity to clearly and effectively communicate, including being a good listener and having empathy (understanding), especially for clients ✓ The ability to adapt, have flexibility and self-management ✓ A demonstrated capacity to have smooth interactions with a wide variety of people, that includes clients, work colleagues and people from different backgrounds ✓ The ability to think clearly and solve problems under pressure, as well as displaying self-awareness, focus and action under stress
Career opportunities as a lawyer ____ ❖ Criminal Lawyer ❖ Commercial Lawyer ❖ Personal Injuries Lawyer ❖ Family law Lawyer ❖ General Practitioner, for example in a rural, regional or suburban law firm ❖ Community Legal Services ❖ Barrister ❖ Corporate Counsel/In-House Lawyer: This is where you work in a large organisation e.g. Heritage Bank, and provide legal advice ❖ Government Lawyer: Local, State and Federal Governments all employ lawyers to provide legal advice, policy advice, legislation reform ❖ Judges’ Associate: Each year, Judges select an ‘associate’ to assist them with a range of functions including research. ❖ Politician: Law is the most popular degrees for politicians across all parties ❖ Judge: definitely a longer term goal
Becoming a lawyer… a solicitor ____ To become a lawyer who can practise as a solicitor, you will need to complete the following steps: 1. Complete a Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor 2. Complete practical legal training ❖ You can do this as part of your Honours year; or ❖ After you’ve got your Bachelor of Laws 3. Be admitted as a lawyer in the Supreme Court of Queensland 4. Apply for a practising certificate through the Queensland Law Society
