Ifeanyi Ajufo, Nnenna (LLD) Nnenna Ifeanyi Ajufo (née Onuoha Udeka) was born on 12 April 1983 in Zaria, Nigeria. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Law at the University of Abuja in Nigeria in 2005, Nnenna graduated from the Nigerian Law School in 2006 and was called to the Nigerian Bar. She obtained an LLM in International Information Technology Law with distinction from Robert Gordon University in the United Kingdom in 2009 and also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate in International Academic Practice from the University of Lancaster in the United Kingdom in 2017. Nnenna is currently employed as a lecturer at Lancaster University Ghana. The focus of her thesis is the progressive interpretation of the right to freedom of information to include access to information and communication technologies (ICT’s) as a human right. Based on the premise that access to ICT’s has become fundamental to the realisation of the human right to freedom of information, the thesis addresses the digital divide that exists between developed and developing countries which has caused an information, infrastructure and knowledge gap that has economic and developmental consequences in developing countries, especially in Africa, as a result of the unequal distribution of information and communication resources in the world. By approaching the subject-matter from a human rights perspective the thesis has convincingly made out a case for the obligation on states, as well as non-state actors, to respect, protect and fulfil the right of access to information and communication technologies. Supervisor: Prof HA Strydom 16
Kandala, Lupwana Jean Jacques (LLD) Lupwana Jean Jacques Kandala is a Congolese national, born on 5 July 1972. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Kinshasa (2003) and was admitted to the Kinshasa Bar Association in 2004. In 2011 Mr Kandala completed his LLM in International Law at the University of Johannesburg. Currently, Mr Kandala assists the Office of the Legal Counsel of the Pan-African Parliament as an Assistant Legal Officer and also works with the Human Rights Institute of South Africa as a Programme Director. He is married to Ms Feza Kibongo and they have three children, Kathy, Jeandrick and Esther. The completion of this thesis coincides with two major international events relating to the imperative of sustainable development, namely the adoption by the United Nations in 2015 of the Sustainable Development Goals and the adoption in the same year of the long-awaited Paris Agreement on Climate Change. It is in this context that developments in the SADC region on biofuel production and use have assumed a new meaning, hence the relevance of this thesis. The challenges and opportunities of biofuel production and use in the SADC region are brought to light by means of a comparative section on developments in different regions of the world and an extensive overview of international and regional legal instruments applicable to biofuel production and use. Based on this research the thesis contributed commendably to the identification of the prospects and pitfalls of a sustainable biofuels industry in the SADC region. Supervisor: Prof HA Strydom 17
