Sociology A Level Induction 2020 So what is Sociology? “Sociology can be defined as the study of society; the web of human interactions and relationships”. Mrs Hazeldine
The session will cover… What is sociology? Is sociology for me? What will I study? How will the course be organised? What is a typical lesson like?
Sociology is… The study of society, large groups of people and individuals. It studies why people behave in the way that they do and how SOCIETY and the INSTITUTIONS such as the Government and education influence the way we behave. It typically goes well with the following subjects: History, Politics, English, Media, Geography and Psychology.
• Sociologists look at events in society and the causes of them and also the impact they have on individuals and on society too. • So, at the moment, sociologists are studying how society has changed due to COVID, how we conformed to new ways of behaviour. How we responded to people who didn’t conform etc. • And the second big event is the death of George Floyd and the anti-racism protests across the world. • Look at the next two slides and think about how society has changed and how individuals have changed behaviour in the last few months.
Is sociology for me? Yes, if you’re interested in questions like these… Are children and Why are some people young people treated rich and some people Are people successful unfairly in society? poor? because of their background or how hard they work? Why are some of the Why are a large hardest jobs poorly proportion of MPs paid? white, male and from private schools? Would the world be happier if there was just one religion?

What caused these people to behave the way they did?
Please look at the sheet. What are the suggested causes of the riots? Extension: are you able to categorise the opinions? ‘[austerity measures] have hit the country’s poor especially hard, including large numbers of the ‘Nothing more than minority youths who have wanton criminality’ been at the forefront of the unrest’ Mayor of London, Boris New York Times, 8th Aug Johnson, August 2011 2011

As a sociologist studying these riots, what should be the main focus? - Individuals and their actions? - Wider society? Watch and listen to this video to help you decide…
Individuals ‘controlled’ by There are two institutions e.g. education, government, police approaches you can take Structural ‘Top down’ political power, education, police, institutional racism, societal inequality, poverty, unemployment Individuals/groups make choices, then take action Social Action ‘Bottom up’ individuals, gang members, opportunists, desire for material wealth
What caused the London riots? Structural causes Individual causes
Which of these statements do you agree with? Most of the rioters took The rioters were fighting If the schools were better advantage of the situation against the police – people people wouldn’t riot and just wanted to steal feel they are treated stuff unfairly The riots got out of hand The Mark Duggan shooting If society was more equal, due to social media was the root cause there would be less (Facebook, Twitter, BBM) problems like this People who rioted should The riots will happen again The government should lose any benefits or social have held an inquiry to find housing they have out why the riots happened, even if it was expensive The news on TV made the We live in a consumer Race was a factor in the situation worse society where people only riots care about getting ‘stuff’ The riots will not happen Unemployment was to Everyone should be again blame encouraged to go to university
Forget the rioters, we A lot of the shops that There should be should focus on the small were looted were big compulsory National businesses that were businesses e.g. footlocker – Service affected by the riots it makes no difference if stuff gets nicked I support and trust the The police are probably If families were more police racist traditional (married mother & father) the riots wouldn’t have happened There are better ways for Rising of university fees Rioters in Gloucester were young people to get their and scrapping of the EMA just ‘copy-cat’ and didn’t voices heard – e.g. could alienate young really have a message for peaceful demonstrations people and lead to riots the police or government People like David Cameron Rioters in Gloucester had I would take part in riots if and Boris Johnson can not similar feelings to those in given the opportunity really understand the London – anti-police and rioters anti-government
Identify and explain some of the causes of the London riots in 2011. Which were your top 3 causes? Are they structural or individual? Do you think another riot could happen? Why?
