Our Aim We are committed to developing the students’ personal, social and academic capacities. We encourage respect, critical thinking, tolerance and care within a safe and nurturing environment. Literacy The components of our Balanced Literacy Program will include: • Teacher Read-Alouds • Shared Reading • Guided Reading • Independent Reading • Reading Responses • Write Traits • Shared Writing • Interactive Writing • Daily Journal Writing/Independent Writing • Weekly Sight Words and Word Families/Spelling Program • Phonics Our daily literacy centers involve a variety of literacy tasks which help students develop the daily habits of reading, listening to reading, writing, and working with peers which will lead to a lifetime of independent learning.
Home Reading Your child will be choosing a book to read daily from Raz Kids (online). Each student will be assigned a username and password which will be sent home. We will be sending home an assignment every Monday which will be due on Friday morning. Please prompt your child when he/she encounters an unfamiliar word rather than reading it for them. This will help to foster independent reading. All work must be completed by the students themselves. A Guide to Writing Responses The most important thing to remember is to let your child do the writing themselves. Please do not correct their work or spell words for them. Allow them to make mistakes, as this will help them make progress in their writing. Encourage them to be risk-takers!
Math We will be using the Digit Series math workbooks which include: patterns, geometry, arithmetic, measurement, graphing, time, fractions, even and odd numbers, situational problems and probability. Reflex math and IXL.com are two great resources that will provide extra practice in math. Homework • To be completed for the next day • If unable to complete due to a valid reason, please send a note in your child’s agenda • No homework on weekends and holidays Please help and encourage your child but allow him/her to do the work on his/her own. Please do not correct his/her work.
Our IB Units of Inquiry in Grade 1 TERM ONE My Family is Unique- Who We Are Getting from Point A to Sea- Where We Are in Place and Time TERM TWO More than Language- How We Express Ourselves Out of This World- How the World Works TERM THREE Needs and Wants- How We Organize Ourselves Creepy Crawly Creatures- Share the Planet
Our Classroom Essential Agreements 1. We listen respectfully to our teachers and friends when they are speaking. 2. We raise our hand and wait for our turn when we have ideas to share. 3. We always use our indoor voice inside the school. 4. We help with our hands- we don’t hurt others. 5. We use caring and kind words to make our friends and teachers feel happy. 6. We always do our best work! 7. We always tell the truth. 8. We keep a calm body. 9. We respect each other’s materials.
Our school code outlines 6 essential agreements based on the attitudes necessary to reach the outcomes of the IB/PYP Learner’s Profile by developing attitudes of respect, commitment, cooperation, tolerance, empathy, and integrity. These attitudes promote personal growth while encouraging children to become responsible citizens and to adopt acceptable life-long behaviours within a global world. When essential agreements are broken, students do community service by giving their time and effort back to help others. 1. I agree to show RESPECT 2. I agree to show COMMITMENT 3. I agree to show COOPERATION 4. I agree to show TOLERANCE 5. I agree to show EMPATHY 6. I agree to show INTEGRITY Dress Code School dress code is mandatory. Solid navy blue dress trousers, solid white turtleneck, solid white polo, or solid white shirt with a collar (neatly tucked in), and solid navy blue, solid black, or solid white socks. Students with long hair must wear it tied up (Page 5 in Agenda). On days when students have physical education, they are permitted to come to school in their physical education attire (navy blue sweatpants/shorts, white t-shirt, running shoes).
Celebrations in class The school will continue to acknowledge a student’s birthday in class (i.e. singing a song, or taking a picture). Due to allergies and ongoing classroom instruction, celebrations with food items will no longer be permitted. In addition, the school will not distribute any invitations (i.e. birthday or special events). Parents who would like to invite their child’s classmate(s) must do so outside of the school premises. Parents are encouraged to exchange coordinates with other parents in order to organize play dates and/or special invitations outside the school hours (Agenda p. 9). ***Important*** In the event that your child is sick or unable to attend school, please inform us by phoning the school by 8:00 a.m. Please leave a message on our voicemail, giving your child’s full name, homeroom number, and reason for absence.
Vacations outside school calendar Vacations resulting in absence from school are strongly discouraged. By law (article 14 and 17), all school-aged children are required to attend school regularly. If a parent chooses to take a vacation outside the regular school time, it MUST be noted that upon the student’s return to school, all forms of evaluation will be given to him/her within a week. As well, it is the student’s responsibility, not the teacher’s, to “catch up” with all the work that has been missed during their vacation. Please keep in mind that Ministry exams take place from the end of April to the beginning of June (Agenda p.9).
