GETTING STARTED WITH A ROOMMATE Having a college roommate is a unique experience. Whether you are used to sharing your space or not, we want to share some tips with you so you can be on track to have a great experience with your roommate! 1. Contact your roommate before you arrive in August. You will find your roommate information in a letter from the housing department. Calling or texting your roommate in the summer is a good way to get to know each other prior to the semester. Ask what each other is bringing to college with them, and if you plan on sharing those things (refrigerator, carpets, TVs, etc). 2. Be honest with each other from the beginning. Whether you already know each other or not, it is likely you have never lived with each other. It is important that each of you are honest with what you would appreciate from the other so the other knows how to best be respectful. Some questions to consider asking prior to the semester include: How do you feel about guests, and how late are they welcome to stay? What time do you typically like to go to bed and wake up? How will we split up room chores (taking out trash, cleaning the sink or toilet, sweeping, etc.)? 3. Respect your roommate’s things. Don’t borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first. On the flip side, be honest with what you are okay sharing and what you aren’t. 4. Lock your door when you’re away. You might feel comfortable leaving your room unlocked while you’re away, but your roommate might not be. A good rule of thumb is to always keep your door locked when you’re both away. Simple as that, just remember to always bring your keys with you while you are away. 5. Communicate, communicate, communicate! Most roommates aren’t going to intentionally get under your skin. The root of most roommate conflicts arise from simply not talking about the is- sue at hand. Just remember to be respectful to each other when you are communicating. 6. Be open and flexible. Your roommate will not be exactly like you. You will likely have different backgrounds, different political beliefs, different religious beliefs, different cultural norms, etc. That does not prevent you from being great roommates! Try to be open and flexible with each other. This is what college is about! 7. Don’t expect to be best friends. While some roommates do end up being each other’s best friends, it often doesn’t happen that way. Expecting to be best friends puts a lot of pressure on both roommates and can lead to major letdown if it doesn’t work out. Come into the semester simply expecting to be friendly to each other, and see where the rela- tionship goes from there.
MOVE IN DAY Move-In Day: The day we are all looking forward to! Below are some need-to-know facts about this day! - New students may move into the residence halls beginning Thursday, August 19th at 11 a.m. If that time changes you will be notified via EagleMail. - When you get to campus please go directly to your assigned residence hall for check-in. - Have your EagleCard or Photo ID ready to present to staff. Your EagleCard is your key card for access to your residence hall and serves several other purposes. If you haven’t received your Eagle Card, you will need to obtain one from the conferencing office located in the Student Center. - Move in generally takes around an hour. This includes filling out appropriate paperwork, receiving your key, and moving items into your room. We have several individuals who are designated to help haul room items inside for your convenience. - While we discourage early move-ins, we understand that situations do arise that require you to move in before our regularly scheduled check-in. Please contact the Housing Office at 308-432-6466 or cschousing@csc.edu ahead of time to let us know that you need to move in early. Please note if you arrive before August 19th, you will be charged a week of summer rates (unless you are here for an athletic team and your coach approves your early arrival).
