Weekly Update - June 4, 2021 Dear Community Partners, As the chief public health strategist for the Greater Nashua Public Health Region (GNPHR), the Nashua Division of Public Health and Community Services (DPHCS) will continue to send weekly updates to inform our community on the current status of the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, the response efforts by the City of Nashua and Greater Nashua Public Health Network (GNPHN), and any additional updates related to the health and safety of our community. COVID-19 Data Update We continue to experience substantial community level transmission of COVID-19 in the City of Nashua. Substantial community level transmission is determined by two metrics established in conjunction with the State of New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When one of the metrics exceeds the set threshold, a community is designated as "RED" or substantial. Currently we are exceeding the thresholds set on one metric: new infections per 100k. Total Cases: All confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, either active or recovered. Active Case: A case that is currently sick or in isolation due to COVID-19. New Infections per 100k: Number of new cases within 14 days standardized by population size to compare across groups. This shows how quickly disease is occurring in the community or the incidence of disease. 7-Day Total Test Positivity Rate: Number of PCR and Antigen tests that are positive compared to the number of PCR and Antigen tests that are negative over the past 7 days. A rising positivity rate indicates a rising number of infections in the community. A Year in Review: COVID-19 Annual Report for Greater Nashua
This was an unprecedented year in Public Health, putting public health in the spotlight. The year brought challenges in leadership and response efforts that DPHCS was fully prepared to accept. In our role as Chief Public Health Strategist, we convened partners, made linkages to services and resources, and disseminated timely information as key efforts in the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic. With dedicated staff and the diligent onboarding of surge capacity staff, DPHCS worked flexibly on the front lines to meet the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. New systems were put into place to monitor the pandemic in the Greater Nashua Region and to serve our constituents. Staff were cross-trained to perform many functions out of their normal scope of duties while maintaining routine services. This “all hands on deck” approach allowed us to successfully protect and promote the health and safety of the citizens of Nashua and the Greater Nashua Region. The pandemic gave us clarity in many areas. We saw the resiliency of a community and witnessed the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on our most vulnerable populations. Yet, with our community partners and the support of City leadership, we have continued to thrive as a community and reach those in need of services This document summarizes the DPHCS COVID-19 response efforts from March 12, 2020 through March 15, 2021. ACCESS FULL REPORT HERE Update to DPHCS COVID-19 Testing Clinics Going forward, the Nashua DPHCS will no longer be offering weekly COVID-19 testing clinics at the Elm Street Parking Garage. Our testing clinics have had a significant decrease in the number of individuals seeking testing. We will be making referrals to other community testing sites which can be found on our website. We want to thank our community partners who were involved in these testing clinics throughout the past year for their superior efforts and support. Thank you City of Nashua Parking for your efforts in making the garage accessible for our testing operations, Nashua Fire Rescue for providing and setting up equipment in support of our work efforts, and the Nashua Police Department for providing security and support in every aspect of the work alongside of our team. We would also like to thank the staff and volunteers from the Nashua Fire Rescue, Nashua Police Department, United Way of Greater Nashua, and St. Anselm College for assisting at these clinics. We could not have done it without you!
Local Barber Shop leads efforts in Vaccinating Staff and Clients This week, we are recognizing La Fama Barber Shop in Nashua for being part of the solution! Two weeks ago, one of our Bilingual Outreach Workers, Robert, connected with the owner during an outreach walk and scheduled a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for May 21st to vaccinate his staff and a few clients (8 in total that day). At that time, he told us he could get more people, and we scheduled a second vaccination clinic for May 28th where we ended up vaccinating another 10 people. The owner again stated that he had many more people interested, and we have scheduled to go back this coming Saturday. This fantastic group has gone above and beyond to reach out to there community of friends and family to have them vaccinated in a place they are familiar with, and feel safe. We cannot thank them enough for their dedication and effort in keeping their community safe and healthy. Thank you La Fama Barber Shop! Tick Season is Here - Prevent Bites! Many have noticed that there are an abundance of ticks out this season. Dog ticks have been showing up early this year. Deer ticks, also known as black-legged ticks, 40% of which carry lyme disease are also in abundance.
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash or bullseye. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings (e.g., rash), and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, applying pesticides, and reducing tick habitat. For more information on, visit the CDC website. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. Anyone can develop PTSD at any age. There are factors that can increase the chance someone will develop PTSD, and these are often not under that person's control. Even though PTSD treatments work, most people who have PTSD don't get the help they need. The month of June is PTSD Awareness Month. Join us as we spread the word that effective PTSD treatments are available. For more information on understanding PTSD an online resource guide is available here. Are you a Veteran?
