“ “ My Industry Diaries DOLOMITE IN INDIA This is a short summary of the report on Dolomite ore in India. Dolomite is the most volumetric item in making of the wall putty. These gures have been taken from Indian Bureau of Mines. Dolomite (Mineral & Rock) is a word that is used by geologists in two different ways: 1) as the name of the mineral dolomite; and, 2) as the name of a rock known as dolomite, dolostone, or dolomite rock. Dolomite is very similar to the mineral calcite. Calcite is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), while dolomite is a calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2). These two minerals are one of the most common pairs to present a mineral identication challenge in the eld or classroom. (Source : Article by: Hobart M. King, PhD, RPG). The best way to tell these minerals apart is to consider their hardness and acid reaction. Calcite has a hardness of 3, while dolomite is slightly harder at 3 1/2 to 4. Calcite is also strongly reactive with cold hydrochloric acid, while dolomite will effervesce weakly with cold hydrochloric acid. Now, let us see the statistics of this material with respect to the gures published by the Indian Bureau of Mines. We have changed it to graphical representation for the easy understanding of our readers. Note : As per Govt of India Notication S.O. 423(E), dated 10th February 2015, 'dolomite' has been declared as 'Minor Mineral', hence the producers report the production data directly to the respective states and not to IBM. However, efforts were made to collect this information through correspondence with the State Directorates of Mining and Geology of individual states or visiting their websites. But data of only a few States could be collected. All possible information/data that could be gathered has been presented in this Review. Let us salute this “fair & beautiful” gift of nature which is the main body of India's favourite product the white wall putty.

“ “ My Technology Diaries ELECTRO OSMOSIS – TREATMENT OR CON ? Drycotec Diaries is happy to have a very senior author & expert William Gilchrist write for us. Mr. Gilchrist is a mortar & concrete professional with more than three decades of experience. He is based in Coventry, West Midlands, United Kingdom. Since the last ten years, he is working with Colton Precast, head quartered at Birmingham. In this article, he speaks about a different concept & is really an interesting read. Electro osmosis dam-proong is this a con or not?, In this case, no plaster required. This system is chemical free, but is suitable for any type of wall and for all of you out there, a minimum of costs. This process occurs when an electrical potential is applied across a damp porous material which causes a force to be exerted on the water which then moves towards the cathode (earth). This system uses platinum wire anodes inserted into the wall at regular intervals. Joined together by plain titanium wire these anodes are placed in the building in a ring type conguration. One end is connected to a low voltage power supply and the circuit is completed at the other end by an earthing rod (cathode) driven into the ground. At least two metres away from the nearest anode and driven to a level below that of the anodes. The completed and operational system then provides the electric potential which stops the rising damp and allows the wall to dry out. Removal and replacement of salt contaminated or damaged internal plastering is carried out as usual. The normal specication is used when re-plastering after the insertion of a chemical damproof course. Before you rush out and purchase this system, I would urge caution. Is the hype genuine or is this A survey was carried out on a But what of other systems, do they just another con? The residence in Hudderseld UK of work? “ My Celebrity Diaries D.D. PUROHIT : MR. GAME CHANGER !!! Mr. Dharmendra Dutta Purohit started his career 30 years ago. An era when white cement was used only for decorative purpose and the plant always worked below 50% capacity. Standard processes and traditional thinking were perfectly practised. It was a different time with landlines, fax and typewriter- based ofces. Everybody worked hard and life was good. The fresh mind of young Mr. Purohit was not at peace. Something did not feel right and He decided to intervene. Innovating thoughts generated ideas which had to be executed. Convincing the unit head was not an easy job but performance and perseverance always wins in the end. Change of raw materials in a cement plant was the rst major game changer in the industry. This was followed by colour cement and water proof cement. The entry of DD Purohit was certainly a big value addition for customers as well as competitors. Readers should make a note that due to lack of permissions, we will not be taking any names in this story. Some information would always remain below the carpet. A born R&D man, DDP sir has been always experimenting with new products and raw materials. His hunger for improvement is voraciously high. The limited application of white cement was the next challenge & this was not an easy one. That market was happy with This parameter was taken very Mr. Purohit saw a paradigm a conventional Oil based putty. seriously because it would be a shift in his career and has been Mr. Purohit & the team wanted saver of time and water. “ “ My White Diaries WATER PROOF WALL PUTTY Team Drycotec speaks to Anantha Krishnan Subraveti (AKS), the Dry Mix technology Guru. He has 28 years of hands on experience in the industry. AKS, is currently doing multiple roles in work and personal life. He has started his new innings & plans to hit a few more centuries with us. AKS has also successfully completed assignments some very big brands as a technical consultant. It is a pleasure for our readers to have him write for Drycotec Diaries. You can contact him on 9929991161 Great to know a new segment emerging in wall care putty namely “WATER PROOF WALL PUTTY”. The new creation is market innovation and customer centric approach by wall putty manufacturers. When cost optimization of wall putty is going as a competitive edge, market has been created for a high price water proof wall putty. This clearly shows customers are willing to pay a price for a value-added product. Now, one needs to understand the value addition to the new variant water proof wall putty. The water proof quality in wall putty comes from special additives of polymers, silanes and silicone dry powders which basically do not affect technical properties and provides water proong ability. Some additives improve technical properties in addition to water proong properties. The aim of this article is to share some thoughts on advantages of the product. This might help manufacturers a deeper insight to ne tune the product to bring more value addition consciously choosing the needed additives. 1. Water proong ability brings hydrophobic property where wet mortar putty pot life enhances and additives added for pot life can be reduced or even eliminated. 2. The water proof ability keeps out the moisture entry in the putty bags thereby enhance shelf life of the product by 2 to 3 months. 3. Resists Dampness to the wall and provides better appearance after painting. 4. Time interval for painting after putty application is increased by at least 25 to 30%. 5. Water proof paints applied on the surface will have better synergy with the putty surface & durability increases. 6. Wet chalking resistance of wall putty increases signicantly. The product may be evolved to address special applications like sealant, where masons use putty to arrest water leaking areas. This is one place where putty is used by masons, otherwise putty is painters' baby. No doubt the new segment has opened a gate for wall putty manufactures. ANANTHA KRISHNAN Dry-Mix Mortar Consultant
“ “ My Management Diaries PROBLEMS & SOLUTIONS Dr. S.B.Hegde "Domain Expert in Cement " of International Bodies - UK, Germany and the USA, writes for Drycotec Diaries. This article has been extracted from one of his famous articles on management. SECTION 1 - PROBLEMS POOR LEADERSHIP No matter how strong a company's function, goals, and market, the common denominator that can sink any business is Poor Leadership. Ultimately, the success of a business rests upon its leader; any issues a company has can typically be traced back to ineffective leadership. POOR BALANCE SHEET A tangible result of poor leadership is often poor nancial results and goal achievement. To optimize production, sales and efciency, a company needs employees committed to their jobs, the company and its vision. Poor leaders don't inspire workers to deliver their best performance and to look for training and development opportunities. NO SYNERGY Poor company and departmental leadership also inhibit the development of synergy. Effective managers coordinate tasks within their departments and promote an atmosphere that encourages idea sharing and discussion. They get employees aligned in the pursuit of shared goals. Poor management may result in more fragmented departments and work roles. This means that each employee neglects the importance his work plays in achieving company and departmental objectives. LOW MORALE Low morale is another possible consequence of poor leadership. This can result from employees feeling misdirected or uncertain about the company and their jobs. Poor communication contributes to this issue. Overly critical managers may demean or demoralize employees who make mistakes but want to succeed. In some cases, failure to address negative employees or poor performers leads to low morale, because good employees often have to pick up the slack. HIGH EMPLOYEE TURNOVER A culmination of ongoing poor leadership is high employee turnover. Workers who aren't motivated and are burned out from a poor culture begin looking for other jobs. This further escalates protability concerns for the business. This downward spiral is often difcult to get out of since companies struggle when they lose top performers and experienced employees and must replace them with new hires. Even those employees who stay get frustrated at the loss of familiar co-workers and friends. LACK OF COORDINATION AND TEAMWORK In most instances, a bad leader only looks after The employees will see what the management wants himself or herself. This involves trying to look good to achieve, while the bosses will be able to with the top management at the expense of the other understand what support their staff needs in order to people, particularly his/her teammates. The result is deliver well. If the situation permits, collaborate with distrust, not just with the employees towards their your team to be able to quickly formulate the best head, but also with the top management toward their solutions. staff if they believe what the bad leader is saying.
SECTION 1 - SOLUTIONS If we analyse these symptoms, two strong reasons or causes are revealed: poor leadership and absence of a strong ethics-based culture. Managing employees is an art and only a good leader can master it, with intuition, skill, strong listening, and effective communication. If employees are managed correctly, things will change dramatically with time. Following are some of the means to bring effective change into the culture of the organisation. 1. HAVE A CLEAR PLAN IN PLACE A change-management plan needs to clearly articulate the areas of the business that will be affected and the impact on customers, suppliers, stakeholders, and employees. 2. SET THE GOAL Employees will work better with concrete goals that are achievable (though they can simultaneously be aspirational). Workers need to be able to see the roles they play in achieving the new goals and what they will mean for them, their coworkers, their units, and the organisation once the goals are achieved. It is important to be able to articulate to employees where the company stands now and where the leadership sees it in the future. Leaders should also be able to articulate why the company needs to change and where it needs to be, whether due to shifting market forces, new opportunities, nancial issues, or a new strategic approach. 3. DEFINE THE CHANGE Updates should be provided frequently to mitigate rumours, answer questions, and provide reassurance. 4. ARTICULATE CHALLENGES All changes come with risks of the unknown, uncertainty, and other potential challenges. It is important for companies to be upfront about the challenges that may be faced. Even if those challenges have not been fully identied and planned for, it is a good move to try and discuss the potential challenges, the range of those challenges, and what the company is doing or will do to address them. 5. LISTEN CAREFULLY Employees are going to have a lot of questions, ideas, feelings and emotions. It is important for managers — from front-line supervisors to c-suite leaders — to openly and actively listen to these concerns, validate them, and address them as clearly and frankly as possible. 6. FIND KEY INFLUENCERS Every organisation has key players who have earned the respect of their coworkers, have longevity (and therefore perspective), and are inuential. Getting key players on board and letting them act as a sounding board can help senior leaders better understand how change is being perceived, refer recurring issues, and become advocates for the change. 7. SET NEW PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES Organisations need to translate changes into performance appraisal, assessment, compensation, and promotion cycles quickly. Employees in a time of uncertainty will want to know how the changes will affect the way they are evaluated. Whenever possible, these changes should be articulated well before the performance period begins.
