BAR FOOD BAR FOOD
THE ONLY THING BETTER THAN TALKING ABOUT FOOD IS EATING IT Let’s face it, the Dutch are not really known for their food. However, a small visit to the Rijksmuseum shows plenty of beautiful old still lifes where food plays the main role. It proves that there was a passion and proudness in The Netherlands for their food. The loss of wealth after the Golden Age came to an end resulted in a more efficient and sober approach to anything really, including food. These days, the Dutch cling onto their favorite classics. However there is a slow food revolution taking place where seasonal and local ingredients are embraced. We serve some typical Dutch lunch food such as an uitsmijter, broodje kroket and the all-time favorite tosti. And make sure to accompany your favorite Dutch drink with the classic bitterballen at apero time. DUTCH SNACK “BITTERBALLEN”

BEERS BEERS
IN THE END, IT WILL ALL END IN BEERS Long ago, due to the lack of clean drinking water in The Netherlands, everyone drank liters of beer every day. Even children! Don’t worry, the alcohol percentage was a lot lower than it is today. Every village would have its own brewery. Amsterdam had over a hundred breweries and was the only city to import and export special beers in the Golden Age. These days, Heineken is Amsterdam’s most famous beer brand. In the last few years, more than thirty new Dutch breweries have started to produce beer. Brouwery ‘t IJ from Amsterdam started some years ago and makes some of our favourite beers. In The Netherlands, beers are served with a layer of foam (two fingers) to protect the beer from oxygen and make sure the gas doesn’t fade. When the foam is gone, the Dutch even pronounce their beer dead. That’s why they drink their beer from small glasses, such as a vaasje (25cl).

SPIRITS SPIRITS
NO GREAT STORY EVER STARTED WITH SOMEONE EATING A SALAD Alchemists in the Middle East were the first to master distillation. They weren’t only trying to find gold; in fact, they were also trying to make medical elixirs. To do so, they would distill liquid, collect the vapor, and gather the spirit that came off the material. In the Whisky world the term angels share is given to the amount of alcohol which evaporates from the casks during maturation. Spiritual or not, we believe that all liqueurs are here to be enjoyed and even lift one’s spirits under the right circumstances. Whether accompanied by old friends or new, by family or colleagues, there is always time to share a nice moment with the right drink in hand.

THIRST QUENCHING In The Netherlands, people will refer to spa rood or spa blauw when they order mineral water. The brand Spa has become a generic term for mineral water for the Dutch. Sparkling water is called spa rood, as the label for sparkling Spa is red, the color rood in Dutch. Likewise, spa blauw is a generic term for still mineral water with its blue label. In most restaurants, if a guest orders sparkling water, they will most likely ask for spa rood. Generally, the waiter will just bring the house sparkling mineral water and not necessarily by the brand Spa.

HOT HOT
HOT, FRESH, FOAMY, TALL OR SMALL WE’LL MAKE THEM TO SUIT ALL The Dutch have loved coffee for centuries and consume the most coffee in the world per person. The most popular coffee remains a regular coffee, black or with milk and sugar. When the Dutch brew coffee, they do it in a big glass pot and a filter that serves many people in the course of the morning. It is also a custom to invite each other over for coffee at home in the morning or early afternoon. In Dutch offices, you’ll always find the best small talk and gossip besides the coffee machine. In addition, coffee breaks are taken very seriously, almost comparable to the Spanish siesta. But, The Netherlands’ contemporary coffee culture is very progressive, especially in Amsterdam and other larger cities where small coffee roasteries pop up. Bakkie pleur, anyone?
