The City of Perth is transitioning to the 3 bin system in
line with the Waste Authority State strategy to become
a sustainable, low-waste, circular economy in which
human health and the environment are protected from
the impacts of waste.
Waste & Recycling Guide 2020 2021 - City of Perth
Waste and Recycling Targets
Australians send more than 20 million tonnes of
waste to landfill every year. We just put things in the
bin and the council takes it away. It’s out of sight and
out of mind. But the amount of waste we generate is
a big problem, and it’s only getting bigger.
The state government have set a 65% diversion from
landfill target by 2020. In the last 3 years, the City of
Perth diversion from landfill has grown from 12-20%.
Therefore, it is very important City of Perth residents,
businesses, visitors and event attendees use all
recycling services correctly, while aiming to minimise
waste as much as possible.

                               DISPOSE

The Waste Hierarchy shows the different steps that
you can take to minimise the waste you create.

AVOID: The best way to deal with waste is to prevent
it in the first place. Consider what you're buying and
use alternatives that don't create waste.
REDUCE: Only purchase what you need and before
you make a purchase, check whether you can buy
the item in a smaller quantity.
RE-USE: Rather than throwing things away, we
should check to see if it can be used again, repaired
or repurposed.
RECYCLE: When we recycle something, we convert
the item back into raw materials that can be used to
create new products.
RECOVER: Some waste can be converted into
energy, allowing us to recover some of the value of
the material used to create it.
DISPOSE: If waste isn’t reused, recycled or recovered
it ends up in the environment or in landfill.

Ideas to minimise
your waste
AVOID
• Choose reusable whenever possible. Think BYO
cups, bottles, cutlery and picnic plates, reusable
  shopping bags, rechargeable batteries, even
  reusable straws!
• Take your reusable coffee cup to cafes that support
the reuse movement. Find participating cafes and
get up to 20-50c off your coffee.
• Think twice before printing. Go for recycled paper
when you must have a hard copy, and reuse those
  scraps in a handmade notepad.

REDUCE
• Cut down consumption. Buy nothing new for a
  day, a week or month.
• Cut down food waste at the end of each week by
checking your fridge for unused fresh food and
search for recipes to use up all your leftover food.
• Borrow items from friends or neighbours before
  buying them for yourself.

RE-USE
• Mend or alter clothing rather than throw it away.
Need help? Find a Repair Café such as Repair
  Café Perth.
• Put unwanted items on your local ‘Buy Nothing’
or ‘Pay it forward’ Facebook site.
• Keep a reusable water bottle with you to avoid
  buying bottled water.

RECYCLE
• Clothes and textiles cannot be recycled in your
yellow top bin. They get tangled in the sorting
equipment at the recycling facility and cause
havoc! Please take them to your local Charity or
  Charity bin.
• Gas cylinders and butane canisters can be left at
recycling centres and most transfer stations (see
Drop off Facilities). If placed in your yellow top bin,
they are hazardous to the sorting equipment and
the hard working staff at the recycling facilities.
• Batteries can be recycled at specialty recycling
stations. Visit our website to find Perth locations.
• Items with power cords (e-waste) can be recycled
at recycling centres and many transfer stations.
Waste & Recycling Guide 2020 2021 - City of Perth
What can I recycle in my
yellow lid bin?

PLASTIC BOTTLES CARDBOARD (flattened)
& CONTAINERS & CARTONS
(no lids)

GLASS BOTTLES ALUMINIUM PAPERS &
& JARS (including & STEEL CANS MAGAZINES
broken glass) (excluding
                                        shredded paper)

Please note accepted items have recently changed
due to market changes, and clarity from the
comingled recycling facilities in Perth.

How to excel at recycling
1. Use two bins in your kitchen, one for recycling
   and one for landfill waste.
2. Ensure all recyclables are empty, rinsed and clean.
3. Ensure all lids are removed from containers
   and bottles
4. Ensure all recycling is loose in your recycling bin
   and not in bags.
What is my bin day?
To make it easy to remember your bin service day,
we have attached a sticker to the back of your bin.
The sticker includes your address, service day and the
