ECS Computing Grids
Description of Service:

The School of Engineering and Computer Sciences (ECS) at Victoria University of Wellington currently
provide access to two Computing Grids; the SCS (Student Computer Services) Grid and the ECS (Engineering
and Computer Sciences) Grid.

Grid computing is a way of connecting computing resources over a network so that shared computing power
can process large-scale data and analysis tasks in hours, where as a single computer may take days or
weeks to process. Users who do a lot of computation may find grid computing beneficial to their research.

ECS Grid - Comprises of approximately 170 NetBSD (Unix operating system) workstations managed
         by the Sun Grid Engine.

SCS Grid – Comprises of approximately 1000 ITS Student Computers running the Windows XP
operating system. This grid is managed by Condor.

Both Grids make use of the idle time on a large number of desktop workstations (cycle stealing).

Please note: grid computing resources are suspended when a machine is not idle, therefore the actual
number of available resources, and the run time of any grid computing job will vary with the number of PCs
being utilized.

Customers:
ECS will consider any party with valid research needs. ECS can be contacted via email -

Access Request:

To request access to the computing grids please contact ECS via email - eresearch@ecs.vuw.ac.nz

connection) enabling seamless two-way interaction and almost instantaneous sharing of data over long
distances.

KAREN members can connect to any other member organisation, available KAREN services or to
collaborators on other advanced networks internationally. As Victoria University is a member of the KAREN
community, connectivity to KAREN is offered as a service within the Universities network environment.

MyExperiment Research Networking
Description of Service:

The myExperiment Virtual Research Environment is a collaborative environment that enables users to share
digital items associated with fields of research, find publicly shared workflows, publish workflows or
experiment plans and share them with researchers and groups from around the world.

myExperiment makes it easy for researchers to contribute to a pool of scientific workflows, build
