Tournament Scoring Review
 2022 VA Virtual State Tournament Team Scores will be posted to the
  VOICES website (www.vaodyssey.org)
 Team Scores: Raw Scores and Normalized Scores

Long-Term Scoring:
• The team earning the highest score for each long-term problem and
division in a competition is awarded 200 points unless the problem
states otherwise. Problem 4 is an exception to the above.
• Every other team receives a percentage of 200 based on its raw
score in relation to the highest raw score. [normalized]
• Any penalty points are deducted after scores are calculated.
                                                     Long Term 200 pts
• Repeat for Style Scoring: 50 points max Style 50 pts
• Repeat for Spontaneous Scoring: 100 points max Spontaneous 100 pts

• Placement is based on the total of the three normalized scores

                                                                           9

Escape vroOM

The Spirit of the Problem is for the team to perform an original
solution about characters trying to escape an unusual room.
The team will run one or more team-made vehicles with
multiple propulsion systems that complete four tasks selected
from a list. Once a task is successfully completed, a clue will be
revealed. The clues will lead the characters to another clue and
eventually out of the room. After the vehicle completes a task
that reveals the final clue, the characters escape the room and
discover the mystery behind the room.

                                                                     12

Odyssey ReOMvention

The Spirit of the Problem is for the team to create a
performance about a self-replicating threat to an
environment found on Earth. It is eliminated by a team-
created Odyssey reOMvention device that is used by a
Hero Character to save the environment. The environment
returns to its original state after the threat is removed,
which will be reflected in a setting change. Two animal
characters will hide when the environment is threatened,
and then one animal will convince the other that it is safe
to return once the threat is removed. The performance
will also include an original song and must use ARM &
HAMMER™ Baking soda.

Classics... : The Musical Production

The Spirit of the Problem is to create an original performance
depicting a biographical musical about a lesser-known historic
figure selected from an expanding list created by OM teams.
The musical will include three songs: an opening number that
is the first song to introduce the figure and the setting, a song
that conveys an emotion, and one free-choice song. A
storyteller character will help explain the history of the lesser-
known figure. There will also be a theatrical special effect, a
creative scene change, and a membership sign that looks like
a marquee for the musical.

                                                                     21

Problem 5 Division 2B
Langston Hughes Middle School #24750

The team from Langston Hughes Middle School presented a solution as a
complete package with a surreal underwater environment, stunning props and
costumes made from recycled products, and extraordinary stage poise and
acting—all of which came together to articulate an important message for us
all. When a young girl vacations in a polluted beach town, she laments the
trash and suffering from careless human waste. But after she is whisked away
into an underwater circus world, complete with sounds from marine trash and a
working pinball machine, she—and the judges—recognize the importance of
protecting the incredible beauty of the natural world while we still can. The
judges assessed an incredible amount of teamwork was necessary to plan and
execute every single element of this performance with close attention to detail
and with charisma. Their solution not only solved the problem: It overflowed
with jaw-dropping artistry—and an important message, in the words of the
team’s young character, to “reduce, reuse and recycle.”
                                                                                  26

Problem 2 Division 2
Loudoun School for Advanced Studies, #48829

This team stood out - not only for their hilarious script and a delightfully complex
Rube Goldberg inspired device, but for the heart, gusto, and enthusiasm with
which they took the virtual stage. But much to the judges' delight, the creativity
was not limited to the team’s performance - instead, we were treated to a
explanation video unlike any we'd seen before! Music, special effects, careful
editing, and a hilarious (and very informative) series of in-character interviews
covered all our questions and then some - and left us laughing every minute, too.
There were goofy photoshop inserts, there was even a segment where one team
member sat across the couch to interview himself! Remember, no element of this
explanation video was intended for scoring - this elaborate, creative, and
delightful 7-minute production was put together purely for fun and to make the
judges smile. Which it definitely did. This achievement of effort, teamwork, and
sheer joy is a perfect example of the happy spirit of the Odyssey community.

                                                                                       27

Primary Problem
Hailey Leiva of Meadowland Elementary

Hailey volunteered to help the team each week at their practices. She was always
available to hand out materials, take notes on things that the team had questions
on and provide moral support. She was great at encouraging the team to keep
working even when they faced challenges. Hailey served in an Assistant Coach’s
role and the Coach fully appreciated her positive attitude and support.

Hailey is a third grader and not a member of the team.

                                                                                28
Ranatra Fusca Award

Problem 5 Division 1B
Hamilton Elementary School #41296

The students at Hamilton Elementary School captivated the judges with a unique,
out-of-the-box circus that only this team could have imagined: the inside of a
dog’s stomach. After the young character’s voracious pet dog swallows him
whole, the boy finds himself in a digestive wonderland. Greeted by the Dorito
Ringmaster, the boy witnesses CheezIts and Cheetos perform acts, while dodging
stomach acid and mucus, and, most importantly, avoiding going down “the hole.”
The boy is astounded to meet Squeaky The Clown, the dog’s chew toy he thought
was lost in the backyard. Finally, panic ensues when a sudden wave of newly-
swallowed food arrives, including a purple grape—lethal to dogs! This team risked
it all by turning this circus-based problem completely upside-down—and their
innovative solution stood out… in a stomach of its own.

                                                                                29
Ranatra Fusca Award

Problem 2 Division 2
Swanson Middle School, #34210

This team overwhelmed the judges with an incredible number of amazing features
to their solution! From sets to costumes to script themes, every feature of their
performance was pushed to its absolute creative max and very clearly the labor of
so much love and time and effort. No small detail escaped this saavy team. They
built an undersea set with a GIGANTIC bank of perfectly reproduced coral entirely
out of trash and pool noodles. In telling a story within the frame of a documentary,
the team encased the entire set in an enormous TV screen. And dressed your
newscaster character in old newspaper for a costume. From a simple (but risky)
chain reaction powered device that unleashed a sinister hail of rubber duckies on
innocent sea life, to an octopus with a color changing costume to show off her
camouflage, to a fully articulated, professional quality, biologically accurate, and
sassy mantis shrimp marionette puppet - this team left the judges in constant awe
of how far they were willing to push the boundaries of risk-taking and creative
thinking.
                                                                                   30
Matryoshka Structure

The Spirit of the Problem is for the team to design, build,
and test a Matryoshka Structure— a structure with smaller
versions of it nested inside. The structures must only be
made of balsa wood, glue if desired, and the outer
structure will be tested by placing as much weight as
possible onto it. Before weight-placement begins, the
assembled structures are disassembled into two
interconnected parts to remove the next structure from
largest to smallest until a tiny character is released. The
performance will imitate the structures being removed with
a team member that represents the tiny character being
revealed and coming to life. It will also include storage in
the theme.

The Spirit of the Problem is to create an original
humorous performance about a character living a
regular life that wakes up to find they are in a circus
world as part of a circus act! The circus world will have
a minimum of two original animals performing tricks, a
clown, circus acts and a ringmaster announcer. The
young person returns to the regular world thinking it
was just a dream until they see someone from the
circus world.

Primary Teams

The Spirit of the Problem is for the team to create and
present an original humorous performance about
transportation. The team will run one or more vehicles
with three different propulsion systems that transport
items. When the transported items are combined, they
form something a salesperson character will try to sell.
The performance will also include a mechanic character
that runs the vehicle(s), a funny narrator, and a song
about transportation that repeats a stanza three times.
