MESSAGE FROM THE AMG EDITORS Distinguished Guests, It gives us great pleasure to welcome you, albeit virtually, to the 22nd Annual GG2 Leadership Awards. We recognise 2020 and 2021 have been among our most challenging years and though we cannot meet in person, we are sure you would agree that it is important to showcase and celebrate outstanding achievement in these difficult times. We should take inspiration both from individuals and organisations that have been at the forefront of change and progress over this very tough year. Perhaps, now more than ever we need to come together and celebrate those who are, in whatever way, beacons of talent and progress. When our father, Ramniklal Solanki CBE, started these awards – he was keen to highlight success and show that Asian, Black and other minority ethnic groups were making a real difference in British society, across a very wide spectrum. Over the years, we have welcomed and celebrated many high achievers and pioneers - and today the children of those remarkable men and women are creating a new, rich and exciting legacy. It is our duty and honour to recognise this and to further inspire a spirit of endeavour, enterprise and effort towards creating a better and fairer society for all. The pandemic has presented us with myriad tests and trials and reminded us that by coming together and working collectively we can overcome seemingly insurmountable hurdles. Your presence at these GG2 Leadership Awards helps to reinforce and re-state the idea that we can move forward and by recognising success, the future will be better and brighter. Our father, who passed away in Spring last year, left his own incredible legacy and would heartily endorse the idea that the show must go on! We hope you enjoy the evening. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF LONDON © Greater London Authority Distinguished Guests, For decades, the GG2 Leadership Awards have honoured some of our nation’s most dedicated leaders. They have recognised pioneering individuals across a range of sectors from law to medicine, technology to public service and have always celebrated the rich diversity which makes Britain great. These awards pay tribute to leaders who have changed our communities and our country for the better. They not only showcase vision but also innovation and entrepreneurship, and have been instrumental in amplifying the achievements of people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds. It has been an extraordinarily difficult year. Since you last gathered for these awards, many of you will have lost friends, relatives and colleagues to Covid-19. And all of us have witnessed the devastating impact the pandemic has had on people’s lives and livelihoods. This evening is an opportunity to celebrate the resilience and commitment of so many in our community and I hope it inspires us all to pursue a more just and equitable world once restrictions ease. Despite lockdowns and untold disruption to our way of life, tonight’s nominees have persevered for the good of others. Whether by campaigning for all healthcare professionals to have adequate PPE or helping people in need navigate the inequalities exacerbated by Covid-19, they have shown that our sense of community is not confined by walls. With vaccines offering some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, the day is coming when we will be able to share our joy, grief, pain and relief in person. My Mum and I were delighted to receive our first doses of the vaccine recently and, knowing that so many scientists from so many different backgrounds came together to develop it still makes us proud. So I want to say thank you to all the nominees and winners being honoured tonight as well as the unsung heroes at home who have gone the extra mile for their communities. COMPÈRE & SPEAKER Compère Nihal Arthanayake Presenter Nihal Arthanayake is a broadcaster and TV presenter. He is best known for presenting his daily daytime show on BBC 5 Live. He joined BBC Radio 1 in 2002 as the host of Asian Beats with DJ Bobby Friction which established the start of a successful career in radio. The pair won a Sony Radio Award in 2003 and achieved Gold standard in specialist music – which became Asian Beats with Nihal when Bobby left. Nihal was given his own show BBC Radio 1’s Review with Nihal – in 2009 which won Best Radio Show at The UK Asian Music Awards. Speaker Kalpesh R Solanki Group Managing Editor Asian Media Group Kalpesh is group managing editor of Asian Media Group (AMG). He graduated with a law degree (LLB Hons) from Queen Mary University of London, and qualified as a barrister from the Inner Temple. ENTERTAINMENT & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Entertainment Rekesh Chauhan Rekesh Chauhan is a British pianist and composer. He has trained in both western classical and Indian classical music. Rekesh is the winner of numerous awards including the NIAA Young Musician of the Year 2018 awarded at the Southbank Centre and the 2019 Alumnus of the Year by the University of Leicester. His knack for fusing eastern and western styles has brought him invites to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, the British Houses of Parliament as well as to arenas over 60,000 people. Rekesh’s collaborations range from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan to Talvin Singh. Rekesh's album Avartan earned him a no.2 position on the iTunes World Charts. FINALISTS Ade Adebisi Ade Adebisi is a British-Nigerian rugby league footballer who also played for the British Rugby League Association (BARLA), for the London Skolars, the London Broncos, Hull FC, Doncaster Lakers, Featherstone Rovers, and Whitehaven. The only Rugby player to ever play professionally with a genetic blood disorder called sickle cell, a condition that shortened his career. He continues to strive, against all odds, passing the baton to young men and women across the globe. Today, he is the Vice Chairman and General Manager of the Nigeria Rugby League Association. He believes that this will ultimately raise the profile of Rugby in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Under his leadership, Nigeria hosted and won the first-ever Middle East and Africa (MEA) Championship and is currently ranked Number 1 in Africa. Ade is raising awareness about sickle cell disease, helping to eliminate the stigma associated with it. Amika George Amika George is a 21 year old student at Cambridge University, who, at the age of 17, started the Free Periods campaign from her bedroom to end period poverty in the UK. In 2019, her campaign successfully persuaded the UK government to provide free menstrual products in all English schools and colleges from 2020. She has received global recognition for her campaigning work, including receiving a Goalkeepers Campaign award by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in conjunction with the United Nations, and she was listed by TIME magazine as one of the 25 most influential teenagers in the world. @GG2DIVERSITY www.gg2leadershipawards.co.uk 15 #GG2AWARDS
FINALISTS Bernardine Evaristo OBE Bernardine Evaristo is the award-winning author of eight books and numerous other works that span the genres of novels, poetry, verse fiction, short fiction, essays, literary criticism, radio and theatre drama. Her writing and projects are based around her interest in the African diaspora. She won the Booker Prize 2019 with her eighth book, Girl, Woman, Other and became the first black woman and black British person to win it. In 2020, she was awarded the British Book Award’s Author of the Year and Fiction Book of the Year and the Independent Book Award for Fiction. The novel was a #1 Sunday Times bestseller for five weeks, the first woman of colour to achieve this position in the paperback fiction chart. She was chosen as one of the Vogue 25 list of Britain’s most influential women for 2020 and voted one of 100 Great Black Britons in 2020. She was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List last October and an MBE in 2009. Bernardine has also set up many successful arts inclusion projects. She is an honorary fellow of St Anne’s College, Oxford, vice president of the Royal Society of Literature, president of Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance and professor of creative writing at Brunel University London and Vice Chair. Dame Donna Kinnair DBE Professor Dame Donna Kinnair DBE is the chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). Donna is responsible for delivering the RCN’s strategic and operational plans. After joining the RCN as head of nursing in 2015, Donna was promoted and joined the RCN executive team to director of nursing, policy and practice in 2016, where her key role is to work with UK-wide RCN staff to drive and implement the future RCN professional nursing, policy and practice strategy. FINALISTS Darryl Laycock Following his release from prison after spending more than a decade inside for numerous gang related offences, Darryl Laycock has made extraordinary efforts to turn his life around. Once deemed the most dangerous offender in the north- west of England, he is now recognised as an influential crime prevention mentor. He is passionate about educating children on the perils of crime and has been successful in educating over 160,000 young people, empowering them to follow their dreams. Darryl’s work played a part in the BAFTA winning documentary Gun No.6 and he has also advised HRH Prince Charles on ways to combat knife crime. Dr. Anand Kumar Dr. Anand Kumar is a non-executive director at the Union Bank of India and a board member of FirstMicrofinance Bank in Afghanistan. Dr. Kumar is a senior banking and insurance executive with financial and general management experience in the United Kingdom, India, Singapore and the Middle East. He has contributed to setting up Retail and Banking operations of ICICI Bank in the UK and worked with Bank of Baroda as head of retail banking and advisor strategic initiatives. He also runs the Kusum Foundation, a foundation in India aimed at vocational education, health and environment. Dr Anand is widely travelled, an avid learner who fervently believes that maintaining relationship and understanding of customers is the most important aspect of any business. FINALISTS Dr. Chaand Nagpaul CBE For over three decades, Dr. Chaand Nagpaul CBE has worked as a GP in his group practice in north London, serving a large multiethnic community. He is the first BAME chair of the British Medical Association (BMA) Council, representing the medical profession across the UK to government and policy makers. As BMA council chair, he has championed race equality in the NHS. He has been a visible figure calling for action to address the disproportionate impact of Covid-19 on BAME healthcare workers and communities and gave evidence on this issue to parliamentary committees and contributed to Baroness Lawrence’s review An Avoidable Crisis. Dr. Jajini Varghese Dr. Jajini Varghese is plastic surgeon, academic lead and consultant in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the Royal Free Hospital and University College London. Her research led to the identification of genetic mutations associated with breast cancer enabling the risk stratification of women for familial breast cancer. She continues to innovate in reconstructive surgery and is developing Raman Spectroscopy for accurate cancer detection and Robot-assisted Surgery. She also set up India’s EMET Scholarships for medical students who then spend two years in a deprived area of India. FINALISTS Dr Maheshi Ramasamy Dr. Maheshi Ramasamy was born and went to school in Sri Lanka. She obtained her medical degree at Christ’s College, University of Cambridge and subsequently, trained in infectious diseases and general internal medicine. She obtained a DPhil at Wadham College, University of Oxford, and is currently a consultant physician at the John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford. Since March 2020, she has been treating patients on the NHS frontline with COVID-19 infection. Her research interest is in immune responses to vaccines and she is a principal investigator at the Oxford Vaccine Group. She is part of a senior team working to plan, conduct and deliver rapidly expedited vaccine trials during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 23,000 participants have been enrolled on these trials in the UK, South Africa, Brazil and Kenya. The results of these studies are the basis for the emergency use approval of the Oxford Astra Zeneca study in the UK and overseas. Emmie Narayan-Nicholas Emmie Narayan-Nicholas is an 11-year-old schoolgirl who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017, at the tender age of eight. The sudden diagnosis brought her world to a complete halt, but not for long. Emmie always believed that something good would come out of her ordeal. Less than a year later, she set up Emmie’s Kitchen to provide food for parents living at the bedsides of other sick children, often hours from home. Emmie’s Kitchen is now a registered charity, running on donations and the work of volunteers. FINALISTS Farmida Bi CBE Farmida Bi CBE is EMEA chair of Norton Rose Fulbright. She has more than 25 years of experience advising on capital markets and Islamic finance transactions, and is also European head of Islamic Finance. Farmida champions diversity and social mobility within Norton Rose Fulbright and in wider society, also serving as chair of the Patchwork Foundation, which promotes the integration of disadvantaged and minority communities into public life. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2020 for services to the law and charity. Hashi Mohamed Hashi Mohamed is a broadcaster and barrister in No5 Chambers based in London, specialising in planning and environment law and commercial litigation. He came to Britain aged nine, as an unaccompanied child refugee. He attended some of Britain’s worst schools and was raised exclusively on state benefits. Yet today he is a successful barrister, with an Oxford degree and a CV that includes numerous appearances on the BBC. FINALISTS I. Stephanie Boyce I. Stephanie Boyce is the vice president of the Law Society of England and Wales. In 2021, she will be the first ethnic minority president in the Law Society’s history. Stephanie was admitted as a solicitor in 2002 and holds a Master of Laws in public law and global governance from King’s College, London. She currently sits on the Law Society Council holding one of the seats from the Women Lawyers Division. She is also the former chair of the Law Society’s Conduct Committee and holds a number of statutory appointments with her local authority. Joshua Beckford Joshua Beckford was the youngest person to study at Oxford University, at just six years old. Joshua is based in London and was diagnosed with high-functioning autism from an early age but never let the diagnosis damper his aspirations. Now fifteen, Joshua helps to highlight the challenges minority groups face in their attempt to acquire autism support and services. He was recently listed in the top 30 most remarkable people in the world with autism who have impacted society. Last year, he was appointed ambassador for Low Income Families Education (L.I.F.E) Support, for the Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network in Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya and the UK. @GG2DIVERSITY www.gg2leadershipawards.co.uk 21 #GG2AWARDS
FINALISTS Joss Cambridge-Simmons Described as the UK’s leading “super Manny”, Hackney’s Joss Simmons is taking modern childcare to the next level. Joss is the founder of childcare service Jossy Care and is frequently invited to deliver motivational talks on topics such as depression, domestic violence, children and the future. Keen to address stereotypes in childcare industry, Joss has spoken out on the topic of male nannies being refused jobs on the basis of their gender and the difficulties they face. Joss recently featured in Time Out, Hackney Gazette, East London Radio and won the National Diversity Award. Kayam Iqbal Kayam served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Medically discharged on return from Afghanistan he set up OppO Recruitment, a recruitment agency specialising in ex-military personnel and JobOppO a dedicated ex-military jobs board. Shortly afterwards he founded The OppO Foundation, a registered charity which seeks to address all the issues that ex-military personnel and their families experience on their return to civilian life. FINALISTS Krishnendu Majumdar Krishnendu is an EMMY-winning and BAFTA-nominated television producer and director. He is the current chair of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). He is the first person of colour to be appointed to the role in BAFTA’s 73-year history and the youngest chair in 35 years. He is a changemaker and has been selected by Variety in their V500 list as one of the influential business leaders shaping the global media industry. He co-founded the independent production company Me+You Productions in 2012. He has produced the critically acclaimed BAFTA nominated drama series I Am and the International Emmy-winning comedy, Hoff The Record. Marvyn Harrison Marvyn Harrison is an inspirational community leader and businessman who is able to deliver business goals and vision using sound strategy, communication, and people management. His leadership experience as the founder and driving force behind Dope Black CIC, an educational and healing platform designed to improve the outcomes of black people, has seen him become the voice of the Black community across the UK, US, and African continent. FINALISTS Omari McQueen Omari McQueen may be the youngest award-winning vegan chef, advocator of veganism, and chief executive officer of his company, Dipalicious - a plant-based Caribbean restaurant. South London based Omari founded his restaurant when he was just eight. In 2018, he became the world’s youngest restaurateur when he opened a pop-up at Box Park food market in Croydon. Omari now has a wide selection of dips, snacks, juice packs, and variety of food items. In a bid to attract more children into veganism, Omari has announced the launch of his very first vegan cookbook – Omari McQueen’s Best Bites Cookbook. The book, which features 30 easy-to-make plant-based recipes. He has also called on the UK government to remove its requirement to provide meat, fish, and dairy from the School Food Standards. Omari has recently made his debut on the BBC’s children channel with his brand new vegan cookery show, What’s Cooking Omari? Onjali Rauf Onjali Rauf lives and breathes social justice and is transforming society for the better. Onjali Rauf is a children’s fiction author, and founder and CEO of Making Herstory, a grassroots human rights movement mobilising people and organisations to take action against the abuse, trafficking and enslavement of women and girls in the UK and beyond. Through her fiction writing, she wrote her first book (The Boy At The Back Of The Class) after undergoing lifesaving surgery. She has created a huge impact on children and adults everywhere in highlighting the refugee crisis and domestic abuse. She founded her own women’s rights organisation (Making Herstory) and is working with domestic violence shelters, delivering aid in Calais to women and children, political lobbying, aiding rape survivors in the UK, speaking in schools to educate people on attitudes towards girls and women, working on a film about the Birangona (women who were raped during the Bangladeshi war of Independence). @GG2DIVERSITY 24 www.gg2leadershipawards.co.uk #GG2AWARDS

FINALISTS Raja Suleman Raza Raja Suleman Raza, the founder and chief executive of Spice Village Group and Grand Sapphire Hotel, started his career as a chef working at a Brixton eatery in 2001, with a vision to start his own food brand one day. In late 2004, Raja opened his first 20-seater restaurant in Tooting. Today, Spice Village with a host of services in catering, restaurants and events serves more than a million customers all across London and the UK annually. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Raja founded the One Million Meals campaign to feed free of cost meals to the NHS frontline staff, keyworkers, vulnerable and homeless people. Shalina Patel Shalina Patel was featured on BBC news in July 2020 for her work on teaching diverse histories all year round. She founded @thehistorycorridor on Instagram, to showcase the diverse history that she teaches. The account has 16,500 followers and has inspired teachers nationwide to re-think their history curriculum. Shalina created training full of practical tips for schools, from tackling the racial literacy of staff to reflecting on school assemblies, trips and displays. Soumya Krishna Kumar Soumya Krishna Kumar launched The Crisis Project, a non- profit social enterprise during the first lockdown in March. The flagship project, Letters to the NHS, encouraged members of the public to write letters of support to frontline workers, recognising their individual efforts during the pandemic. There are now almost 1000 volunteers, aged from 6-90, sending in their letters of appreciation. The Crisis Project has been featured widely across mainstream media, including BBC, ITV and Sky News, as well as Channel 4.
