A MESSAGE FROM ANN BULLER PRESIDENT AND CEO, CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Change. We encounter it every day. Those with the courage to embrace and effect change undoubtedly achieve a far different kind of success than those who fear it. When you choose Centennial, you choose to engage in an experience that goes beyond learning the skills and knowledge needed to get a job. You choose to learn about yourself, about our complex world and about the role and responsibility you have in making positive change. Our Signature Learning Experience (SLE) will challenge and reward you in ways very few college experiences can. As part of the SLE, you’ll take Global Citizenship: From Social Analysis to Social Action. Through this course, you’ll gain a new perspective on yourself and the world around you. Industry partners, dynamic and diverse faculty and staff, an exceptional student association and dedicated alumni – these are the groups that make up our community and we’re a community that truly believes you can make a difference in the world. At Centennial, you get more than the expertise and knowledge you need to get the career you want – you gain the perspective that lets you “become the change you wish to see in the world.” 3
A WORLD OF NEW PERSPECTIVE Through our Global Citizenship and Equity Learning Experience (GCELE), Centennial College has continued to demonstrate its commitment to student participation in global citizenship learning by providing diverse opportunities for our students. GCE Learning Experience (GCELE) aims to prepare students to be leaders of positive social change in our intricately connected world. Past GCELE experiences have taken students to Peru where they had the opportunity to make physical improvements to schools, teach pre-planned lessons and assist in developing a small sustainable guinea pig farming co-op. In Cabarete, Dominican Republic students participated in Teach to Learn, a project empowering youth and their families through community and educational development initiatives in efforts to help break the cycle of poverty. “Everyday was a learning experience. I learned the importance of teamwork as students worked together in the health clinic as well as in the home renovation projects and kayaking activity. I learned about public and private healthcare systems, which gave me better insight on the advantages and disadvantages of both systems and how they compare to Canada’s current healthcare system. And most importantly I gained a better perspective on how the non-profit organization we worked with functioned to reduce the inequalities of poverty and healthcare.” ~ Carollyn San Jose, Bridging to University Nursing Program, September 2010 - December 2011 GCELE participant (March 6 - 19, 2011) 4
