Vi.Te - Vignaioli e Territori at Vinitaly 2019: events, seminars, and masterclasses with natural winegrowers Verona, April 7/10th - The 2019 edition of Vinitaly will welcome the natural winegro- wers Association Vi.Te - Vignaioli e Territori in a whole new light. The event has changed from ViVit to “Vi.Te,” and here the more than 100 winegro- wers of the Association from throughout Italy as well as France, Slovenia, and Austria, will gather in the new Pad. F – Organic Hall. However, the updates don’t stop there: on each of the four days of Vinitaly, the Asso- ciation will hold a conference and a masterclass, for a total of eight events within the Verona expo. The subjects of these events are those that are now central to every discussion concerning agriculture and sustainable wine production: the figure of the natural winemaker and her wines; the relationship between agriculture and climate; price and the wine economy; the sale of these wines to distributors and to the consu- mer. It will therefore be the winemakers themselves - who live these issues every day in their work and in their experience – who will be tasked with bringing greater clarity and knowledge to an international audience of journalists and industry professionals at Vinitaly. Some practical details: entrance to the conferences and seminars is free and limited by seating capacity; tickets to the masterclasses cost €10 and are available here. A further note about the masterclasses, which will be held only in English and will be guided by an excellent presenter, Isabelle Legeron MW (Standard bearer for the natu- ral wine movement, Legeron is one of the 50 most powerful women in wine - Drinks Business): the ten wines presented will be tasted "blindly" and commented on by other winemakers, serving as a valuable tool for an in-depth study of the topic ad- dressed in the seminar of the same day. The conferences will take place in Italian. www.vignaiolieterritori.it

And the program for each day: ► FIRST DAY - Sunday, April 7th The winegrower at the center of the vineyard/cellar ecosystem. Words, Principles and Experiences. What do we ask of a wine that comes from the estate of a winemaker tied to their land? This conference will be the beginning of a journey that will explore the practices used in the fields and in the cellar to arrive at a wine that is not just a drink, but the pure distillation of land and culture. What is for the Association Vi.Te a wine made by natural winemakers? CONFERENCE Moderator: Sandro Sangiorgi. Speakers: Elisabetta Foradori, Sasa Radikon, Federico Orsi, Nino Barraco, Alessandro Dettori. MASTERCLASS Moderator: Isabelle Legeron MW. Wines: blind tasting of wines from Vi.Te wine-growers. Wine-growers: Guido Zampaglione, Enrico Giovannini, Massimiliano Croci, Evangelos Paraschos, Sandro Sangiorgi. www.vignaiolieterritori.it
Isabelle Legeron MW, will guide us in understanding the technical choices that lead to the creation of ViTe wines and the practices considered essential for the birth of artisanal and local wines. Through the glass, we’ll explore several of the crucial and controversial issues, such as the unpredictability of and understanding of the vine and territory; yeasts and their expression of the land; long maceration of white wines and its significance; filtration and wines with lees still present; the use of sulfur; and length of secondary fermentation in the bottle. Beyond the concept of naturalism, we’ll discuss the difference between purposeful individuality and defect, to be able to distinguish between a poorly made wine and one made in a certain style according to choices in the cellar and knowledge of the land. ► SECOND DAY - Monday, April 8th Artisanal wine and climate change. Agriculture as an ecological act in the Anthropocene. According ot many studies, because of the unprecedented expansion of human activi- ty, we have entered a new geological era: the Anthropocene, the era of the undisput- ed domination of man over nature. Agriculture is one of the human practices that most impacts the environment, and any concept of sustainability must include a dif- ferent kind of agriculture. What are the experiences of the Vi.Te. winegrowers in confronting climate change? Which practices and visions do they suggest for the way we think about agriculture? CONFERENCE Moderator: Adriano Zago. Speakers: Francesco Saverio Petrilli, Gabriele Da Prato, Francesco De Filippis, Emanuele Bianucci, Jan Hendrik Erbach. MASTERCLASS Moderator: Isabelle Legeron MW. Wines: blind tasting of wines from Vi.Te wine-growers. Wine-growers: Giuseppe Ferrua, Rossella Bencini T., Maddalena P. di Bisceglie, Silvio Messana, Marco Sferlazzo. Isabelle Legeron MW, will guide us in understanding the agricultural and winemaking strategies that the Vi.Te. producers have adopted for tackling the era of climate chan- ge. We’ll taste wines chosen to explain how producers throughout Italy use the culti- vation of native grape varietals, different pruning and planting processes, and good soil and foliage management practices try to react to climate change. The story will include the preservation of acidity and freshness in Mediterranean wines, through the search for balance in northern wines, and the impact of seasons like 2017, which saw late frosts and extreme heat waves. www.vignaiolieterritori.it
► THIRD DAY - Tuesday, April 9th Wine economics for winegrowers. From infinite growth to safeguarding social and environmental value. The future of the planet is seriously endangered by the ideology of infinite economic growth. Our current economic model is no longer sustainable - and we have known this for a long time. What alternatives can the world of wine-makers put forward? Are there any possibili- ties for changing direction? Can we combine environmental, economic and social val- ues in a sustainable model? CONFERENCE Moderator: Fabrizio Carrera. Speakers: Corrado Dottori, Alessandro Dettori, Francesco De Franco, Valentino Di Benedetto, Stefano Amerighi. MASTERCLASS Moderator: Isabelle Legeron MW. Wines: blind tasting of wines from Vi.Te wine-growers. Wine-growers: Daniele Tuccori, Gabriele Buondonno, Marinella Camerani, Daniele Delaini, Marco Noferi. Isabelle Legeron MW, will help us get to know the terroirs that have self-organized from the bottom, particular wines born in extreme contexts, and "circular" and alter- native economies that change the usual models of distribution and sale. It is also a return to the past: closed-cycle agriculture, the first form of organized business in the history of Italian farming and viticulture. In some ways, the natural wine movement takes on these concepts and translates them into the reality of the third millennium. ► FOURTH DAY - Wednesday, April 10th How to sell winegrowers and territories. For a different ecology of business. The artisanal wine supply chain. Wine is not just a commodity. It is not just the combination of work and capital in a given territory; it is instead a text, a story, a living work. As such, can it be sold in the same way as a shelf product? The history of our movement is a history of fairs, mar- kets, buying groups, direct sales, enlightened importers and, only recently, specialized distributions. The success of natural wine has depended upon a revolution in taste – and in this regard, a great boost has come from a new generation of sommeliers wor- king in the context of a profoundly changed international restaurant industry. CONFERENCE Moderator: Fabio Pracchia. Speakers: Arianna Occhipinti, Silvana Forte, Sandro Sangiorgi, Piero Guido (Sales agent), Hiroto Sasaki (Japan wine consultant), Tommy Peng (China wine consultant). www.vignaiolieterritori.it
MASTERCLASS Moderator: Isabelle Legeron MW. Wines: blind tasting of wines from Vi.Te wine-growers. Wine-growers: Sofia Pepe, Andrea Occhipinti, Fabrizio Iuli, Paolo Brunello, Rhona Cullinane. Isabelle Legeron MW, will help us get to know the lesser-known native grapes, which seemed impossible to sell, but instead – thanks to the stubborness of winemakers – have entered into the hearts of wine professionals and enthusiasts from New York to Tokyo. These are the natural winegrowers of Vi.Te - Vignaioli e Territori - with the indication of their desk - that will be pleased to welcome you to Vinitaly, in the new space Vi.Te - Pad.
