TIPS FOR SUCCESS Tips for a Successful Sale Barry Mortenson Ventura County Council Sespe Pack 3179 7
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Pack 3179 • Tripled our sale from 2018 with less effort (average Agendaof $1,135/scout) • Changed the culture of our pack’s popcorn sale • Caused the whipped cream shortage of 2018 8
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Set Goals & Communicate Progress Frequently • AnAgenda easily achievable goal is $800/scout or 4 (2 hour) storefront shifts. • Set unit goal-based outings/prizes (i.e. roller-skating party, camping trip, t-shirts, pie face, etc.) • Communicate at Unit/Pack/Den meetings the progress and celebrate the achievements. 9
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Get Buy-In • Kick-off meeting should inform parents and motivate scouts. Agenda (should include goals, popcorn games, sales practice, prize selection, top seller pledge with whipped cream pies) • Be clear on the costs of scouting what your unit will do with the commission. Remind parents that the sale also supports the council. • Make it simple for the parents. • 8 hours of work for 1 Year of Scouting 10
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Top Sellers ($2,500+) • Implement a Top Seller Pledge in your kick-off (leader pie face) Agenda • Selling door-to-door is an underserved market • Contact top sellers with storefront shift vacancies or last-minute cancellations • Scholarship Eligibility 11
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Emphasize Storefront Sales • Plan your goals and popcorn order based on the minimum number of storefront Agenda shifts your unit will work • Each scout should commit to 4 (2 hour) shifts, only 1 scout and parent per shift • Get creative: craft fairs, malls, truck stops, sporting or other special events • Offer at least 5 shifts Saturday & Sunday 30 scouts x 4 shifts = 120 shifts and 5-10 weekday evening shifts 120 shifts x $200/shift/avg = $24,000 in sales • Don’t forget about door-to-door sales (especially the troops) 12
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Tools • Take credit cards at storefronts and wagon sales (no fees with the trails-end app) Agenda • Leverage the trails-end app & leader portal to track all your sales (storefront & wagon) as well as manage the popcorn inventory. • Invest in tables and banners for your unit along with printed (laminated if possible) instructions for your parents. 13
TIPS FOR SUCCESS Sales Potential at Storefronts • Conejo Valley 11 Doors 825 Shifts $165,000 • Ronald AgendaReagan 17 Doors 1,275 Shifts $255,000 • Sespe 18 Doors 1,350 Shifts $270,000 • Channel Islands 10 Doors 700 Shifts (estimated) $140,000 • Ventura County 56 3,920 Shifts $784,000 * Based on 5 weekend shifts/day and 2 weekday shifts/day (½ stores) and a $200/shift average 14
