THE WORLD MAN THE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE WORLD OF NOAH BEFORE THE FLOOD? WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT NOAH'S OBEDIENCE? PHYSICALLY: SCRIPTURE: Based on what we read in Scripture, as well as the scientific evidence, the Earth was likely very different before the Flood. Consider these thoughts from Dr. Jeff Miller: The Bible tells us a lot about Noah's character and obedience: GENESIS 6:8 - "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." "When we rewind the movement of the continents in the opposite direction...we find GENESIS 6:9 - "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah that the continents fit together like a big puzzle that was apparently torn apart at some walked with God." point in the past... GENESIS 6:22 - "Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, The continents are moving today on the order of centimeters per year, but what if the so he did." continents once moved much faster due to some kind of catastrophe with enough power to actually break up the ocean floor (Genesis 7:11)? Well, that is precisely what GENESIS 7:5 - "And Noah did according to all that the Lord Creation scientists believe happened in the Flood." commanded him." HEBREWS 11:7a - "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household...." 2 PETER 2:5 - "[God] saved Noah...a preacher of righteous- ness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly." Possible depiction of continental movement during the Flood These are remarkable statements about Noah, but based on what God told Noah to do, what would be some of the specifics of his obedience in the building of the Ark? SPIRITUALLY: Much like the PHYSICAL separation of land that took place on the Earth during the Flood, there was a similar SPIRITUAL separation that led to SPECIFICS: God's decision to destroy the world in the days of Noah. In order to carry out God's commands, Noah would have had to do all of these things...and more! Just imagine how much work this would have been! It began with the sin committed by ADAM & EVE in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3). This sin brought lasting consequences that sent mankind PLANNING CHOPPING MAKING WOOD LUMBER on a downward spiral of spiritual corruption. CAIN continued this spiritual decline when he murdered his brother, Abel (Genesis 4:1-16). As Cain's descendants grew in number, they also increased in their sin, to the point that LAMECH (five generations removed from Cain) took two wives and boasted about murder (Genesis 4:19,23-24). Eventually, mankind became so wicked that "every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5). These were the gradual, drastic spiritual changes that took place MOVING in Noah's world that led to the Flood! THE ARK THE MANPOWER: ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TARGETS AMONG SKEPTICS OF THE BIBLE IS THE FLOOD, AND THE ARK IS OFTEN CRITICIZED AS ILLOGICAL, IMPRACTICAL, AND IMPOSSIBLE. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SKEPTICS ALSO CLAIM THAT NOAH WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO BUILD THE ARK IN THE TEACH US ABOUT THIS MASSIVE VESSEL, TIME THAT HE WAS GIVEN [APPROXIMATELY 100 YEARS, BASED ON GENESIS 6:3]. BUT IS THIS AND HOW CAN WE BE PREPARED TO TRUE? WOULD NOAH HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO BUILD THE ARK, ESPECIALLY IF HE HAD DEFEND THE TRUTH ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT PIECE OF OUR HISTORY? HELP FROM HIS FAMILY? LET'S DO SOME MATH: WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE ARK ITSELF? NOAH ALONE: THE MEASUREMENTS: 10-HOUR WORK DAY X 365 DAYS A YEAR X 100 YEARS = 365,000 WORKING HOURS NOAH & length: 300 cubits HIS 3 SONS: X X = 1.4+MILLION one cubit= 18-21 10-HOUR WORK DAY 365 DAYS A YEAR 100 YEARS "And this is how you shall make it: The HEIGHT: 30 CUBITS inches WORKING HOURS length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and NOAH/WIFE its height thirty cubits.” 3 SONS/WIVES: WIDTH: 50 CUBITS Genesis 6:15 USING THE 18-INCH CUBIT AS OUR GUIDE, THIS MEANS THAT THE ARK WOULD HAVE BEEN: 10-HOUR WORK DAY X 365 DAYS A YEAR X 100 YEARS = 2.9+MILLION WORKING HOURS 450 X 75 X 45 = 1.25 The Ark was well 5.5% equipped to meet the challenge of housing FEET LONG FEET WIDE FEET LONG FOOTBALL FIELDS thousands of animals with room to spare. THE ANIMALS FLOOD THE WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE ANIMALS THAT WENT INTO THE ARK? WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE FLOOD ITSELF? The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high "On the very same day Noah and Noah's sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah's wife and the three wives of his above the earth. The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about sons with them, entered the ark—they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing on the surface of the waters. And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. So those that entered, male and female of all under the whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in." - Genesis 7:13-16 were covered. And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the DINOSAURS: earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days" (Genesis 7:17-24). Were the dinosaurs on the Ark with all of the other animals? The answer is "Yes!" Since Noah was told to "bring two of every sort," this would certainly include the dinosaurs that existed at the time. We have abundant evidence in the historical and biblical record (see Job 40:15-19) suggesting that dinosaurs existed alongside human beings after the Flood, meaning that they were on the Ark (along with "all flesh") during the Flood! SCOPE: You might ask, "But how did they get the BIG ones on the Ark?" It is true that some dinosaurs, such Was the Flood simply a local event, or did it truly cover the entire Earth? We have seen that the Bible as the Apatosaurus, were quite large (over 70 feet long in some cases); but remember a couple of things: seems to make this quite clear, but let's take a look at some scientific evidence for a global Flood: first, the average size of an adult dinosaur was about the size of a rhinoceros; second, the Bible does not say how old the animals were that were on the Ark. It is very likely that the animals on the Ark were young, 1. We have found marine fossils (sea-dwelling animals) on the tops of mountains and in the middle of maybe even babies! This would change the space and food requirements drastically! continents far away from the ocean. A global Flood would certainly explain how they got there. 2. The fossil record indicates that many animals—including dinosaurs—were buried rapidly by a catastrophic event. We have hundreds of fossil graveyards, some containing large groups of animals, all SPECIES/KINDS: over the world. A global Flood would cause this. 3. There are hundreds of "Flood Legends" from all over the world, each being distinct in some way, but Scientists claim that there are over 11 million living species on the planet. Some argue that there would not have been all sharing remarkable similarities. Wouldn't it make sense that this would happen, since people would enough space on the Ark for all of these animals; but is this true? First of all, the concept of a "species" is not the same have been talking about the Flood before it was ever written down in the Bible? as the word used in the Bible (Moses used the word "kind" in Genesis 6:20). This means, for example, that instead of having one of every single variety/species of dog on the Ark (coyote, wolf, domestic, jackal, and varieties such as the German Shepherd, Labrador, Beagle, etc.), Noah would have simply had representatives of the dog kind, from which came the variety we see today. Also, among these 11 million species of animal life in existence, only a fraction of those would have actually been on the Ark. After we eliminate plants, fungi, protists, bacteria, and all of the animals that don't fit the Bible's descriptions, we are left with only a few thousand different "kinds" of animals! All of the animals that we see today have come from those that were on the Ark, and there would have been plenty of space for them on this massive vessel! 62 Discovery • August 2019 DiscoveryMagazine.com © COPYRIGHT, APOLOGETICS PRESS, INC., 2019, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED DiscoveryMagazine.com © COPYRIGHT, APOLOGETICS PRESS, INC., 2019, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED August 2019 • Discovery 63
