DAY IN THE LIFE OF A STUDENT-ATHLETE Nicki Paterson, Senior, University of Nevada Las Vegas Men’s Soccer 6:45am - 9am The alarm goes off, its 6:45, normally I would hit the usually snooze button, but not today! I have a one on one meeting with Mark Philippe the Strength and conditioning coach before my lifting session. He was once the World’s Strongest Man, so not a day to be late! I quickly get dressed, grab a protein shake and leave for the locker room. Before the 7:30am team weights session I meet with Mark and we go over my personal program. I have been gaining muscle while maintaining the same body fat percentage. He's happy so I'm happy! Today is an upper body session, I prefer those. Afterwards the guys all shower and we head to the Dining Commons for a 9am breakfast. Oatmeal with berries and some pancakes. I have two classes up next before practice so a good breakfast is essential. 10am - 1pm 10am is my first class. My physical education degree is a lot of fun. This class is one of my harder ones. Anatomy. Good to have early in the morning when I feel the sharpest. The professor is a huge soccer fan so as normal he spends the first 5 minutes of the class asking me how the season is going. A quick 15 min break between classes and off to PED 336 - elementary physical education teaching practicum. Iv almost completed my degree so this is my first taste of teaching for real. This is so much fun. You learn within a classroom setting and today is my turn to teach to my class. I have prepared over the past few nights and the session goes smoothly. Teacher gives me my feedback, an A, yes! The bell rings and its lunchtime.
1pm - 3pm I’ve arranged to meet my roommate John at 1pm at my favourite place in Las Vegas, Chipotle Mexican Grill. It's just across the street from our campus. I go for a burrito bowl with chicken. Don't want to overdo as we have practice soon. My phone rings, it’s my mum and dad on FaceTime. It must be 1:30pm as the call the same time every day. We catch up on home. It's raining again in Scotland. Everything is well at home and as normal they wish they were here. We make sure we are in the locker room well before practice starts at 2:30pm. The locker room is always lively and someone is always up to a prank. Training begins with some team video going over the weekends tactics. We then head to the field for 3pm. It's 101 degrees today so you must be hydrated properly. The coach prefers a shorter hour and fifteen-minute session but it's very intense. We end with a game and I score the winner. 5:30am - 11pm After a quick shower, all the guys head to dining commons for a 5:30pm dinner. It's a Burger Night! I go for a double cheeseburger. I’ve worked hard today so I deserve it. We leave tomorrow for a weekend in California for two games so I decide to do my homework before I go. The best place to study is the library. I lock myself in a quiet room overlooking the amazing library foyer and do my work in an hour. Perfect is only 7pm so I have time to drop off my bag at home before the big game. Not that I'm short of things to do in Las Vegas but tonight is a big one. UNLV Rebels v Duke in a NCAA non-conference Basketball game. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm. It seems like the entire University is at the game. 28,000 sell out. John and I are in the thick of the action in the middle of the student section. By the time the game is over we have almost lost our voices! We lost by 2 points but what a game! As we leave and head for home we decide to hit the dining commons one last time for a late-night snack. It's open till 10pm every night and we have just made it. Peanut butter and jam toasted sandwiches is on the menu tonight. Our apartment is a few minutes away. After our snack, we go straight to bed as we need to be up early to get to the airport tomorrow. I lie in bed and make sure my alarm is set. The clock now reads 11pm. It's been a long but productive day. I wouldn't change it for the world.
