Campus NewsBrief Where Tomorrow’s Leaders are Students Today Vol. 52 Issue 5 November 2, 2020 Rust College Celebrates 154th Founders’ Week Amid Pandemic
2020-2021 STUDENT GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP ELECTED RUST COLLEGE was established in 1866 by the Freedman’s Aid Society of the Methodist Epis- copal Church. founders were missionaries from the North who opened a school in Asbury Methodist Epis- copal Church, adults of all ages, as well as children, for instruction in elementary subjects. A year later the first building on present campus was In 1870, the school was chartered as Shaw University, honoring the Reverend S.O. Shaw, who made a gift $10,000 to the new institution. In 1892, the name was changed to Rust University to avoid confusion with Shaw University. The name was a tribute to Richard S. Rust of Cincinnati, Ohio, Secretary of the Freedman’s Society. In 1915, the title was changed to the more realistic name, Rust As students progressed, high school and college courses were added to the curriculum, and in 1878 two were graduated from the college department. As public schools for Negroes became more wide- spread the need private schools decreased, and in 1930 the grade school was discontinued. The high school continued to until A significant change in the administration of the institution took place in 1920 when Dr. M. S. Davage president, the first Negro to hold that position. Dr. L. M. McCoy (1924), his successor, was the first alumnus serve his Alma Mater as president. He was followed in 1957 by Dr. Earnest A. Smith, an alumnus, class of 1937. 1967, Dr. William A. McMillan, a non-alumnus assumed the presidency. In 1993, Dr. David L. Beckley, alumnus, class of 1967, became the eleventh president. On Among approximately 20,000 former students of Rust College, many completed only their elementary or education. However, more than 5,500 have graduated from the college department. Among these alum- ni are of the United Methodist Church and other Church denominations, public school teachers and administrators, presidents, lawyers, physicians, businessmen, government leaders and And so it is that Rust College has evolved from the simplest of schools to its present status as a four-year, coeduca- tional college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Mississippi State Department of Education and the University Senate of the United Methodist Church. Today, 154 years later, Rust stands as the oldest historically Black institution related to the United Methodist Church, the oldest historically Black institution of higher education in the State of Mississippi and the second oldest private-college in the State.

2020-2021 Rust College... is much, much STUDENT GOVERNMENT more than an investment LEADERSHIP ELECTED in new buildings or new parking lots. It’s an investment in students and teachers and the chances they have to affect each other in ways that will echo for the rest of their lives.

An increasing number of employers are using social media profiles as a way of learning more about potential employ- ees. Be sure to put your profile to work for you! Check your privacy settings. While changing your privacy settings may not completely hide you from the public eye, it surely can’t hurt. Hiding your profile from the public reduces the likeli- hood that it will come up in a Google search. Edit those photos! This one seems obvious, but it is definitely important to filter the photos on your profile. You should untag any pictures of yourself drinking, partying, or generally being irre- sponsible. Language matters. It is important to make sure that you are writing in a way that represents you well. Try to use abbreviations and “chat speak” sparingly.

Holly Springs, MS - Just in time to celebrate the ending of campus quarantine, master storyteller Ebomi Cici and celebrated choreographer Vera Passos will enter our homes and dorm rooms from Brazil, taking us on a magical journey. In this iteration of their ongoing masterclass series, Viver Brasil joins the Lyceum in ex- ploring the conditions for a joyous Black Future with a deep look back to the forest. Ebomi Cici tells the an- cient sacred stories of the Yoruba people as they have evolved over the last 500 years in Salvador, Bahia, known as the African Capital of the New World. These stories exist in three forms: text, song, and dance and provide more than entertainment. Each tale re- lates a specific issue in life and seeks to provide a solution by engaging a specific deity of the Yoruba panthe- on. We will learn songs and dances for the collection of Orishas (translates to Selected Heads) known as the Ode, the Hunters. Come prepared to sing, dance, sweat and laugh. We are honored to experience a true elder passing on her knowledge. Ebomi Cici will be joined by Associate Artistic Director Vera Passos of Viver Brasil. Vera will teach the dances related to each Orisha tale to live percussion. To support communication, our own Dr. Anna B. Scott will provide simultaneous interpretation and translation of the stories. This event is free to the Rust College community but requires registration in advance. Please sign up by using the link below by Friday November 13 at 6 pm. The workshop is $29 for the general public. All proceeds support the ongoing community work of Viver Brasil Dance company in Los Angeles and Brazil.
