2019 International Shea Conference | Accra, Ghana Message from the President From new food markets established in China to GSA registration of 25 new African cosmetic brands, our membership is expanding utilization of shea by innovating new products and promoting our industry in all corners of the globe. This growth brings tremendous benefits to our producing communities through sales and income but also new supply challenges in our leading export production countries. I’m thrilled to see our members rising to the occasion by investing in Africa and improving availability of kernels and butter. We are building new factories, upgrading production, training women’s groups, constructing warehouses, planting trees, and establishing more robust supply chain infrastructure in Nigeria and Ivory Coast. These efforts deliver benefits to more sourcing communities in Africa and also ensure our continued ability to compete and expand in global markets. Our alliance continues to lead the way to convene our membership and drive transformational initiatives in promotion and supply sustainability. We have now established 40 public private partnerships, representing $37 million USD in investment in sustainability to empower women collectors and protect shea parklands across West Africa. Please read the outcomes of the initiatives well documented in our annual report. Our membership continues to expand and support these initiatives. We added 55 new members and our community now stands at 500 strong. I’m also very pleased to report that we added 23 new GSA Sustainability Partners and now have 123 members implementing our program in Africa. All GSA members can play a role in sustainability and we encourage you to join our efforts. Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Joseph Funt for his nearly 7 years of achievements at the secretariat and we are thrilled to welcome Mr. Aaron Adu and Ms. Olawunmi Osholake as they take lead in coordinating our activities and achieving our mission. Here’s to another successful year at GSA. Badiè Marico President, Global Shea Alliance Shea 2019 - Unveiling the Value of Shea | 1
