MORE ABOUT THE VENUE Puri Lumbung Cottages is in northern Bali, in the peaceful, highland village of Munduk. Located about 85 kilometers north of the international airport (Ngurah Rai) near Denpasar, Puri Lumbung Cottages is approximately 25 km south of coastal Singaraja. Puri Lumbung Cottages frequently arranges transport for our guests – both from and to the airport and elsewhere around Bali, based on request. A Unique Eco-Tourism Destination with Traditional and Spiritual Connections The ‘lumbung,' or rice granary, is part of Bali's unique cultural heritage. Traditionally used to store rice - under the protection of the Hindu goddess Dewi Sri - lumbungs are now seldom used because farming techniques have changed.Puri Lumbung Cottages is set in the cool mountain air where fans and air-conditioning are unnecessary. Our property is designed in the traditional Balinese manner, modeled on the sacred human form, with shrines at the head, guest accommodation at the heart and other facilities at the foot. Guests enjoy spectacular sunsets and stunning panoramas of mountains and rice fields, with the valley below and the Sea of Bali just beyond. The first of its kind in Bali, Puri Lumbung Cottages is more than a retreat - it is an eco-tourism retreat dedicated to the discovery, conservation and enhancement of the unspoiled area around Munduk. Our vision and projects encompass an entire watershed: from the gorgeous Lake Tamblingan to the sea, with Munduk nestled in the middle. We employ or otherwise engage local people in activities that sustain the integrity of the land and its water resource. Munduk is surrounded by rice terraces, forests of clove trees and other traditional commodities such as coffee, cacao, vanilla, etc. The forests depend entirely on annual rainfall for sustenance, hence our reference to them as “rain forests.” Our economy depends on these renewable resources for our livelihood. Those wishing a truly unique eco- experience are encouraged to look at our Tamblang Nature Cabins, where guests take part in forest restoration and water conservation projects while also gathering locally-grown food to augment their meals. The people of Munduk village are involved in caring for our guests in various ways. We provide employment for many, while offering apprentice programs for youth. In addition to developing their career skills, they also deepen their appreciation of Bali’s cultural heritage with traditional dance, music and crafts. North Bali, and especially Munduk Village, is famous for grassroots artwork like weaving, dancing, music, cooking, painting and carving. We’re also known for beautiful scenery and remarkably diverse treks. Visitors find here a delightful microcosm of traditional Bali in a unique natural setting, with a climate that is comfortable (20 - 29 degrees Celsius) for all kinds of outdoor activities. To create balance and profound integration, the property at Puri Lumbung Cottages is exquisitely landscaped. Native trees and exotic flowering plants coexist with medicinal herbs. Water features and ponds support koi fish, colorful birds and the ever-present lotus blossoms. A comfortable, open-air community hall welcomes peaceful yoga and meditation any time of day. Our Arathi Spa restores your natural flow of chi while our restaurant provides a rainbow of dining options to delight the palate of our international guests.
