UNDER ARMOUR HIGH SCHOOL ELITE 50 SHOWCASE HOSTED BY ELITE SPORTS SPONSORED BY UNDER ARMOUR Trumbull, CT—March 30, 2014 - The 2014 Under Armour HS Elite 50 Showcase brought to you by Elite Sports was attended by over 130 High School prospects from all parts of Connecticut. Players from the top HS teams in CT were represented including the top players from State Champions Sacred Heart and Bridgeport Central and runner ups Fairfield Prep and Career Magnet. Also in attendance were players from perennial powers Hillhouse (New Haven), Immaculate (Danbury), Bunnell (Stratford), Bassick (Bridgeport), University High School (Hartford), Notre Dame- Fairfield, Capital Prep (Hartford), Harding (Bridgeport), Wilbur Cross (New Haven), Hyde (Hamden), and Trinity Catholic (Stamford) to name a few. Fresh off the CIAC playoffs these players were ready to showcase their talents in preparation for another season of competitive AAU basketball. The teams were split up into grades and then further split into random teams of players to offer great competition opportunities. With three full courts in action at all times, you could find a great game on each court. There were DII and DIII college coaches in attendance watching the games first hand and left the gym with plenty of notes and athletes to consider in the near future. Here are some of the players that caught our eye.
J.J. Conway —Fairfield Warde– JJ is a shooter. Point blank if you leave him open behind the three point line you can count it. JJ handled the ball very well looking for open teammates throughout the games. The thing you notice about him is that he never stands still always moving to the open and soft spots of a defense. On several occasions he was able to trail the play and shoot uncontested jump shots. 9th Grade Clay Westermann—Notre Dame – Clay plays with good self confidence. He handles the ball effectively and looks ahead to find the open man streaking down the court. He shoots the ball with range with several long distance makes. He appeared a bit unselfish at times but was prodded on by his teammates to shoot the ball. He plays smart defensively and doesn’t take any unnecessary risks always getting back on the break. 9th Grade Tommy Lewis —Huntington — Good spot up shooter. Looks to pass the ball and cuts to receive it on the give and go. Tommy was able to get into the gaps and look for open shooters or the big men. Lots of effort on both sides of the court. 9th Grade Cameron Henry – Immaculate – Athletic. Active on both ends of the floor. Loves to get to Other High School the rim. stand outs… Marcel Parons – Fairfield-Warde – Spot up shooter. Good off the bounce. Decent play- 9th maker and can finish in the paint. Jackson Longley – Fairfield-Warde – Kid can play. Good shooter. Makes the right play with the ball. He competes on both ends. Justing Sheffield – Harding – Good floor leader. Makes plays for others. Good passer. Can finish at the rim. Thomas Jamiokolakis – Staples - Hard worker. Does all the grunt work for his team. Screens, rebounds, loose balls. Finishes around the rim. Cameron Sells – Hyde – Very good talent. Can shoot off the bounce. Creative off the drib- ble. Breakdown guard. Can finish at the rim. Attacks the basket hard. Not afraid of contact on either end. Dex Lawson – Capital Prep – Very talented guard. Can create off the dribble. Can score the ball in various ways. Solid defender. Not afraid to mix it up.
Carlos Hernandez —East Hartford, CT – Very athletic guard that took it to the rack strong. Has a great handle on the ball and looked to distribute the ball to his teammates. Has an attack first mentality that puts the pressure on his defender. On defense he moves his feet well causing havoc across the court. 10th Grade Omar Fortt — Stamford— Omar is very good off the dribble and is always in control. Speeds up when he has to and slows down when he has to. Understands the game and likes to survey the defense. On offense he made several three point field goals. Good shooting stroke. 10th Grade Mark Hickman —Ellington, CT — Athletic guard that can handle the basketball and looks to attack. He also demonstrated a good perimeter shot during the games. Mark plays like a seasoned veteran and doesn’t get frazzled by pressure. Did a good job of putting his team into offensive sets. 10th Grade Kyle Partyka — University High School — Kyle is a fearless competitor that is not afraid to get his hands dirty in the paint. This coming from a guy that has great range on his shot making many from three point range. He drives to the basket hard and finishes but can stop on a dime and pull up for a mid-range jump shot. He has a decent enough handle to get by his man and is adept with both hands. Instant offense. 10th Grade
Other High School Chris Lyons – Trumbull – Good around the basket. Rebound. Can stick open J. stand outs… Ben Wrana – E. O. Smith – Excellent outside shooter. Unlimited range. Good team player. Competes on both ends. 10th Darius Smith – Immaculate – Good floor general. Leadership and poise. Makes plays for those around him. Can finish in the paint with various shots. Decent defender. Ryan Rivera – SMSA – Tough hard nosed kid. Competes on both ends every possession. Can score to the basket or hit the J. Jake Collagan – Wethersfield– Crafty PG who looks to make plays for others. Shooter. Ishmeal Archer – University – Athletic guard who loves to attack the rim. Joe Cantey – Notre Dame – Good all-around player. Competes on both ends of the court. Shoot. Dribble drive. Rebound. Joey Wallace —Immaculate – Joey demonstrated some of the better ball handling in the showcase. He’s very quick off the dribble and got to the rack easily. He is also strong enough to bang down low and attacks the offensive glass. He has high IQ and makes plays for others around him. Pin point passing leading directly to baskets. 11th Grade Justin Campbell —Career High School – Justin creates space in the paint with his physicality. He was generally one of the stronger kids in the showcase and muscled up many shots through and around contact. He was also blocking lots of shots intimidating drivers to the paint. A workhorse with a relentless attitude. 11th Grade Thomas Nolan — Fairfield Prep — Thomas demonstrated a very savvy handle with the ball using several moves to get into the lane to finish himself or make plays for his teammates. He plays hard and strong all the time and usually won the 50-50 battle on loose balls. He’s equally adept and making the soft drop pass or the spectacular lob pass which he did on several occasions. He also demonstrated great shooting range. 11th Grade Brandon Henry — Abbott Tech— Brandon plays the game at a high level. He has good bounce that al- lows him to rebound on both ends. He can slash to the basket and make difficult shots and will hit the open jumper often. He has a high motor and is around the basketball. Has a very explosive first step. 11th Grade Isaiah Rascoe —Sacred Heart – Isaiah was exhibiting many of the traits that helped his team win the state championship. He was slashing into the paint and finishing through contact and also coming outside to display a sweet stroke from outside. He made several outstanding passes that lead to easy finishes. On defense, he exhibited a knack for playing the passing lanes leading to several steals. 11th Grade
Donte Peeler —Bunnell – Donte was a beast on the boards on both sides of the court. He used his strength well to carve out space to make power moves down low. He made great use of pump fakes to be able to get his shot up against multiple defenders. He was able to score around the goal frequently. 11th Grade CJ Davidson — Notre Dame—Fairfield — CJ is a bulldog. He is powerfully built and dribbles the ball low and tight to the ground making it impossible to strip or steal. He uses his speed to get into the lane to fin- ish through contact and to make plays for others. He also comes around the curls with his hands always ready in a catch and shoot position. We also observed him sky for several out of area rebounds despite his smaller stature. He is always keeping his head up looking to make the outlet pass to the open man. High IQ. 11th Grade Jaden Martin —Immaculate — Jaden was bouncing all over the court going hard after rebounds and blocking shots. He posts on his man very hard and looks to make a move to the basket or hit the cutters. He was involved in several pick and rolls and was able to finish the plays off with either hand. Solid and funda- mental. 11th Grade Brien Wilson — University High School — Brien is a 6’6” forward that used his length to block several shots out of his area. He was also able to use his long arms to get rebounds over the top without fouling. On several occasions, Brien popped out and made a few jump shots including a three pointer. If he continues to work on his body and put on some muscle, he may be more effective inside. He also needs to develop a go to move once inside the paint. 11th Grade Curhone Baldwin —Basuk – Curhone is a fearless driver with a great handle and got into the paint at will. When he was making athletic layups he was making jumpers from the outside. He was also a dogged defender constantly in the face of his opponent. 11th Grade
Marcus Blackwell —Bridgeport Central – Marcus demonstrated a really physical all around game. He was a strong dribbler to the rack and consistently made the 15 ft jump shot. He also was involved in several pick and rolls as the passer and made several outstanding plays. Marcus made plays for his teammates with his activity. 11th Grade Dontell Glover — Hillhouse — Dontell was an all energy player that left everything on the court. He drives to the rack strongly and finishes and has a good handle. Defensively, is where he stood out today pres- suring his man up and down the court and deflecting or stealing passes several times. Quick feet and always in the passing lane. 11th Grade Kaleb Lutton — Xavier — Kaleb used his strong body and broad shoulders to carve out multiple rebounds during the day. He would then turn and look to outlet the pass for a fast break. He was able to finish inside with layups and tip ins because it was hard to keep him off the glass. Defensively he pushed his man out of the paint making the shots more difficult. He was not afraid to throw his weight around. 11th Grade Will Hardie — University High School — Will is an athletic wing that drives strong to the hoop and fin- ishes high. He is strong enough to finish through contact and can use either hand. He also demonstrated a good jump shot from the 15-18 ft area as well as several long distance threes. He rebounds his position well and has a good enough handle to bring the ball up and start the offense. On defense he has outstanding quickness that led to steals and break outs. 11th Grade Dondre Daniels —Bridgeport Central – Dondre is another quick efficient guard that excels at getting into the paint. He can get by his defenders and finish strongly at the basket. He hustles all over the court and does not give up on the play. Will steal the ball from behind if you are not paying attention. Looks to make plays as well. 11th Grade
Other High School Jake Heaton – Fairfield – Good player. Stick the open J. Pretty strong rebounder. stand outs… John Lewis – Hillhouse – Good off the bounce. Will not be denied getting to the rim. Hard nosed player. Competes. 11th Darius Griffin—Hillhouse—Drove hard to the hoop all day. Made open 3’s. Consistent Lamar Allen—Shelton—Strong inside who carved out good position with good moves un- der the basket. Solid. Billy McCloskey—Somers—Took open shots and made them. All from 3 pt range. Tylon Washington—East Hartford—Solidly built. Rebounded with both hands. Blocked shots. Curtis Torres—Hyde—Speed and handle.
