UK ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST ANTARCTICA 2020 PROGRAMME MANAGER APPLICATION PACK 2020 marks two hundred years since humans first discovered Antarctica. . This unique frozen continent is a place of beauty and wonder, but in two hundred years it has shifted from being the greatest challenge in exploration to our current greatest challenge, climate change. The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is looking for a committed, creative and highly skilled freelance Programme Manager to coordinate a nationwide programme of events and activities to mark the bicentenary of the discovery of Antarctica. The aim is to engage with audiences, who may not yet be aware of the history we share with Antarctica, with a programme of digital and creative interventions which explore the last two centuries of human involvement in Antarctica and to look forward to consider what the future holds for this unique continent. We are looking for someone who it creative, highly organised, a great communicator and passionate about involving new audiences with heritage, culture and the environment. They will be skilled in partnership development and have experience in securing grant funding. Working with a nationwide network of partner organisations you will facilitate and coordinate a programme of events aimed at engaging more people with exploration, science and discovery in Antarctica. You will help us grow our partnership network, develop new audiences and curate a programme which is inspiring, creative and surprising. The aim is to generate ideas, make connections, inspire partnerships and explore this heritage in new ways with a focus on why Antarctica has mattered over the last two centuries, and why it will continue to matter to future generations. The programme will be punctuated by some headline events around key historical dates. There will also be a high- profile social media campaign to develop a digital audience and engender debate. Other activities will include artistic contributions, special events and online activity. The emphasis for the programme will be to use the heritage to reflect on what has passed and what sort of Antarctica are we handing over to the next generation. To that end we are working closely with the UK Polar Network - a network of early career scientists who have a strong pedigree in schools and engagement with young people, as well as other partners like the Royal Geographical Society and British Antarctic Survey. However, we want to develop partnerships with organisations beyond the polar world, so that we might reach new audiences. The role is freelance and flexible with regards to location, but there will be the occasional requirement to work with the team in Cambridge. UK ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST ANTARCTICA 2020 PROGRAMME MANAGER APPLICATION PACK INTRODUCTION The United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) is a charity which exists to advance the preservation, enhancement and promotion of Antarctic heritage to engage, inform and inspire a global audience. We are a small team based in Cambridge with responsibility for conserving and managing six historic sites and monuments (HSMs) on the Antarctic Peninsula. Port Lockroy is our flagship site, welcoming circa 18,000 visitors each season and is one of the most visited sites in Antarctica. In addition to our heritage conservation work in Antarctica we have an active programme in the UK. We have a membership scheme ‘The Friends of Antarctica’ which we are looking to develop and we support a range of organisations in the UK and abroad to either look after British Antarctic heritage or engage the public with it. We also have a growing programme of public and educational events and activities aimed at engaging new audiences with our Antarctic story. UK ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST ANTARCTICA 2020 PROGRAMME MANAGER APPLICATION PACK THE ROLE Job Title: Antarctica 2020 Programme Manager Reporting to: Chief Executive Location: The post is home-based but there will be need to visit UKAHT’s office in Cambridge Fee: £25,000 fixed annual fee Expenses: All reasonable travel costs incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed as per UKAHT policy Job Role: To lead and develop a network of partners across the UK to deliver a varied programme of events to mark the two hundredth anniversary of the first sighting of Antarctica. This is an opportunity to reflect upon the last 200 years of human activity in Antarctica and engage people with the future of the last wilderness on earth. We are aiming to engage new audiences with Antarctica, its heritage and its future – drawing together themes of exploration, science, and climate change, using varied means – exhibitions, events, social media, digital and community engagement. We want more people to be aware of Antarctica and our shared responsibility for its ongoing protection and appreciation of its vital role on planet Earth. You will be responsible for coordinating the partnership, inspiring organisations to engage with the programme and contribute their own events and activities. You will also inspire new partnerships and collaborations, providing support and developing ideas and even sourcing funding, where appropriate. 2020 will see a diverse programme of events, which are well- publicised, across the country for all ages which will share stories, stimulate debate and engender engagement with Antarctica and its role in our shared heritage and our planet’s future. UK ANTARCTIC HERITAGE TRUST ANTARCTICA 2020 PROGRAMME MANAGER APPLICATION PACK Responsibilities: • To coordinate an Antarctica 2020 partnership with organisations across the UK – many of which are already engaged, and developing new partnerships with organisations as yet not involved with UKAHT. • To communicate effectively with the partners, sharing information, creating opportunities for discussion and ideas development. • To coordinate a nationwide programme of events with the partners for the bicentenary. • To work with our communications and PR team and those of our partners to promote the programme of activities and events • To maintain relationships with key stakeholders to ensure the objectives of the programme are met and those funding it are engaged. • To represent UKAHT at external events as required. • To source grant funding where appropriate for specific projects. • To liaise with the Communications officer on web and social media engagement. • To work closely with the Chief Executive ensuring the programme is delivered to a high standard, on time and is effectively promoted. • To be willing to work flexibly as the role requires – including occasional evenings and weekends To undertake all of these with UKAHT values at heart.
