2020 marks two hundred years since humans first discovered Antarctica. . This unique
frozen continent is a place of beauty and wonder, but in two hundred years it has shifted
from being the greatest challenge in exploration to our current greatest challenge, climate
change.

The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is looking for a committed, creative and highly skilled
freelance Programme Manager to coordinate a nationwide programme of events and
activities to mark the bicentenary of the discovery of Antarctica.

The aim is to engage with audiences, who may not yet be aware of the history we share
with Antarctica, with a programme of digital and creative interventions which explore the
last two centuries of human involvement in Antarctica and to look forward to consider what
the future holds for this unique continent.
We are looking for someone who it creative, highly organised, a great communicator and
passionate about involving new audiences with heritage, culture and the environment. They
will be skilled in partnership development and have experience in securing grant funding.
Working with a nationwide network of partner organisations you will facilitate and
coordinate a programme of events aimed at engaging more people with exploration,
science and discovery in Antarctica. You will help us grow our partnership network, develop
new audiences and curate a programme which is inspiring, creative and surprising.
The aim is to generate ideas, make connections, inspire partnerships and explore this
heritage in new ways with a focus on why Antarctica has mattered over the last two
centuries, and why it will continue to matter to future generations. The programme will be
punctuated by some headline events around key historical dates. There will also be a high-
profile social media campaign to develop a digital audience and engender debate. Other
activities will include artistic contributions, special events and online activity. The emphasis
for the programme will be to use the heritage to reflect on what has passed and what sort
of Antarctica are we handing over to the next generation. To that end we are working
closely with the UK Polar Network - a network of early career scientists who have a strong
pedigree in schools and engagement with young people, as well as other partners like the
Royal Geographical Society and British Antarctic Survey. However, we want to develop
partnerships with organisations beyond the polar world, so that we might reach new
audiences.
The role is freelance and flexible with regards to location, but there will be the occasional
requirement to work with the team in Cambridge.

INTRODUCTION
The United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) is a charity which exists to advance
the preservation, enhancement and promotion of Antarctic heritage to engage, inform and
inspire a global audience. We are a small team based in Cambridge with responsibility for
conserving and managing six historic sites and monuments (HSMs) on the Antarctic

In addition to our heritage conservation work in Antarctica we have an active programme in
the UK. We have a membership scheme ‘The Friends of Antarctica’ which we are looking to
develop and we support a range of organisations in the UK and abroad to either look after
British Antarctic heritage or engage the public with it. We also have a growing programme
of public and educational events and activities aimed at engaging new audiences with our
Antarctic story.
