The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Unit was established in January 2018. Some of the key responsibilities of the EDI Unit are to: • Lead on the development and delivery of the EDI strategy across UCC, working with the University senior leadership team and wider partners in support of the University Strategic Plan. • Lead and oversee the University’s Athena SWAN award and other national initiatives and provide effective management and support of various University committees and groups. • Support staff and students to demonstrate their commitment to EDI. • Raise awareness amongst all staff to fulfill their responsibilities to comply with UCC’s regulations, policies and procedures. The EDI Unit is happy to advise students and staff on equality-related issues. Students and staff seeking to make a formal complaint about an equality-related issue have a range of supports, which include (as relevant): • UCC Student Advisor and Ombudsman: https://www.ucc.ie/en/studentombudsman/ • UCC Campus Watch: https://www.ucc.ie/en/studentexperience/campuswatch/ • UCC Human Resources Business Manager (relevant to your University Area): https://www.ucc.ie/en/hr/people/ • UCC Staff Ombudsman: https://www.ucc.ie/en/staffombudsman/ Other Supports for Staff Other Supports for Students Employee Assistance Programme: Student Budgetary Advisor: https://www.ucc.ie/en/studentbudget/ https://www.ucc.ie/en/hr/eap/ Student Assistance Fund: https://www.ucc.ie/en/saf/ Irish Federation of University Disability Support Service https://www.ucc.ie/en/dss/ Teachers (IFUT, UCC): First Year Experience Co-Ordinator: https://www.ucc.ie/en/study/undergrad/orientation/first-year/ Email chair.ucc@ifut.ie First Year Student Peer Support: https://www.ucc.ie/en/pass/ Services Industrial Professional Mature Student Office: https://www.ucc.ie/en/mature/ and Technical Union (SIPTU, UCC): Student Counselling and Development: https://www.ucc.ie/en/studentcounselling/ Email g.hurley@ucc.ie Student Health Centre: https://www.ucc.ie/en/studenthealth/ UCC Researcher Staff Association: Student Union Welfare Officer: welfare@uccsu.ie https://www.ucc.ie/en/rsa/ UCC Niteline Listening service Mon-Thurs 9pm-1am: 1800 32 32 42 or Chat https://www.ucc.ie/en/pass/niteline/ UCC PLUS+ Access Office https://www.ucc.ie/en/uccplus/ A Note from the President I am delighted that UCC 2019/20 Diversity Calendar once again demonstrates the diversity both of our heritage, and of our contemporary work and culture. Our calendar highlights the culturally and spiritually diverse nature of UCC and the communities it serves. As a secular, public institution, UCC is dedicated to promoting equality, eliminating discrimination and protecting human rights. Certain inequalities are historically entrenched, and so changing hearts, minds and policies is not always easy. In the calendar you will find many examples of good practice here in UCC which I urge you to read about. One of the core graduate attributes identified by our Academic Strategy is to create effective, global citizens who recognise and challenge inequality. The calendar inspires us all to put equality and inclusion at the centre of the decisions we make, and the ways we relate to one another. I commit to continuing to place equality and inclusion at the forefront, and I encourage you to do the same. Professor Patrick G. O’Shea President University College Cork About this Calendar UCC Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Unit created this calendar to highlight a variety of religious, civil and University dates and events. The ‘Significant Dates’ section of each month highlights specific internationally recognised religious and civil events. A call was put out to UCC students and staff to name these significant dates. Please note that certain religious events are subject to the lunar calendar, and that this calendar can only offer an approximate indication of when these events will happen. We do not have space to provide details on each date or event, but we hope that they will raise conversations about diversity, and about local flexibility for staff and students observing events of religious significance in particular. The lower right-hand section of each month highlights both UCC events and Irish events specifically relating to the Equal Status grounds. Month-long global events are marked here also. Note that certain equality-related events may be subject to change, and that certain dates were not secured/available at the time of going to print. Finally, the left-hand column of each month highlights particular UCC initiatives and related themes that support the equality, diversity and inclusion agenda. We welcome suggestions for the calendar in future years.
