Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost Blessings in Christ August 15, 2021 CHRIST THE VICTOR LUTHERAN CHURCH 15700 W. Coffee Road, New Berlin, WI www.ctvelca.org 262.782.4940
GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Welcome (+) Confession and Forgiveness Let us confess our sins before God and one another. Pause for silence and reflection. God of grace, We gather in your house full of regret and remorse for the things that have kept us from fulfilling your calling. We have failed to act, and we have behaved in ways that disappoint. But we are your children, and you have promised to forgive. We ask for your forgiveness and the desire to do your work in the world. God loves and forgives all of God’s children. Receive God’s forgiveness and move through the world unburdened by sin, for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. (+) Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. (+) Prayer of the Day God our loving mother, You have nurtured us as your own and offered an inheritance of eternal life. Show us also how to honor and respect all that you have given us so that your legacy will continue for generations to come. Amen.
WORD God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. 1st Reading Ephesians 1:1-14 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5 He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9 he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11 In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, 12 so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. R: Word of God, Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God. 3
Gospel John 14:25-27 P: The gospel according to John… C: Glory to you, O Lord. 14:25 [Jesus said,] “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. P: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Song Baptized in Water ELW 456 1 Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, cleansed by the blood of Christ our king: heirs of salvation, trusting his promise, faithfully now God’s praise we sing. 2 Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, dead in the tomb with Christ our King: one with his rising, freed and forgiven, thankfully now God’s praise we sing. 3 Baptized in water, sealed by the Spirit, marked with the sign of Christ our king: born of the Spirit, we are God’s children; joyfully now God’s praise we sing. Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, 4
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession Assisting Minister: Loving God, C: Hear our prayer. MEAL God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ. Words of Institution (+) The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 5
Communion We will all receive communion at our seats at the same time. If you did not bring your own bread and wine/juice, there are packets of wafers and juice available near the entry to the sanctuary. Remove the clear top layer of plastic first to get the wafer, and then remove the next layer for the wine. Table Blessing SENDING God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world. Announcements (+) Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. Amen. Sending Song Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing ELW 807 1 Come, thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace; streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise. While the hope of endless glory fills my heart with joy and love, teach me ever to adore thee; may I still thy goodness prove. 2 Here I raise my Ebenezer; “Hither by thy help I’ve come”; and I hope, by thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home. Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God; he, to rescue me from danger, interposed his precious blood. 6
3 Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be; let that grace now like a fetter bind my wand’ring heart to thee. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it; seal it for thy courts above. Dismissal L: Go in peace. Share the good news!
