TULIP TALKS THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE PNZCT NORTHERN REGION ISSUE 2 | JUNE 2021 Parkinson's Red Tulip Walks Raise Funds and Awareness in April Promoting health, wellbeing, and exercise with a strengthened sense of community and family. Ron Wallbank is a WW2 veteran who served in the NZ Navy on the famed Achilles warship. On his return to New Zealand after the war ended, he was granted a rehab dairy farm east of Te Puke where he stayed for most of his life, with his wife Mary. After raising their four children, they sold their farm Ron and his daughter walking Mount Maunganui in April this year. and retired to Mount Maunganui. Ron has always been fit and attributes his wellbeing His wife was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Ron to a Naval Officer who forbade him from smoking involved himself in exercise classes and fundraising and a host of other theories. He’s quick-witted and events such as the 24-hour sponsor circuit walks in a very jovial character. Ron walked around Mount Queen Elizabeth Park. He continued helping Maunganui using a tramping stick and as the Parkinson’s New Zealand where ever he could, above photo depicts, he was happy doing it. Not a even after Mary passed away. TULIP TALKS – NORTHERN REGION ISSUE 2 – JUNE 2021 Parkinson's New Zealand Charity Golf Tournament The annual golf tournament in Auckland on 8th April 2021 was a fantastic success and enjoyed by all. Held at Pupuke Golf Course on Auckland's North Shore, the Parkinson's New Zealand Charity Golf tournament raised just over $22,000 for PNZCT services in the Auckland region. The tournament went ahead despite a date change due to the March COVID-19 lockdown in Auckland. Thanks to Diane Nicholson and Sandie Jennins for their help on the organising committee. The team at Pupuke Golf Club went above and beyond to make the day a great success. Jacqui and the team from Catalyst Group kept the BBQ and refreshments cart circulating and the evening was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Summerset and Catalyst who supported the event as our premium partners. Red Tulip Appeal Raises Much Needed Funds The Tulip is the international symbol for Parkinson's Awareness and the red tulip is the official symbol of our charity. This April, across New Zealand, volunteers were out and about collecting for Parkinson's services in their communities. We thank all of the wonderful volunteers who gave their time to represent our organisation at malls and street corners, shaking buckets and selling Tulip Bulbs for the cause. Red Tulip Walks Take Off Around the Country Thank you to all the groups who hosted a Red Tulip Walk in April. Walks can be held at any time during the year, in a park, at a beach, at a school, or indoors on a treadmill. The options are endless! TULIP TALKS – NORTHERN REGION ISSUE 2 – JUNE 2021 Special Tulip Cream Tea recognises World Parkinson's Day We extend our sincere thanks to Jocelyn Grantham, Johanna Quirk, and Petra Bagust, as well as their families, for hosting a stunning Tulip Cream Tea on Sunday 18th April. Over 70 people attended the event that raised $2,200. Funds raised will be put toward Parkinson's New Zealand services in the Auckland region. Held at the Wintergarden Tea Rooms in Auckland, guests enjoyed entertainment by members of the Brass Band from King's College, as well as a delicious high tea. Launched last Spring, Tulip Cream Tea events are becoming very popular. Events are hosted throughout Spring, with a few people choosing to host "special" events at other times throughout the year. Tulip Cream Teas are an opportunity to celebrate birthdays or special anniversaries while doing something beneficial for Parkinson's New Zealand's cause by raising vital funds. The 2021 Tulip Cream Tea campaign will be launched at a High Tea event at the Pupuke Golf Club Lounge on Thursday, 23rd September 2021, and tickets will go on sale in July. TULIP TALKS – NORTHERN REGION ISSUE 2 – JUNE 2021 UPBEAT 2021 Rotorua | July 30 & 31, 2021 This year's UPBEAT conference for people with early- onset Parkinson's will take place in the geyser city of Rotorua. Anyone with early-onset Parkinson's and under the age of 65 is invited to attend, along with their carers, partner, or support persons. The event will run over two days and you'll be joined by some of New Zealand’s top neurologists, researchers and performance coaches to explore how to live your best life ever with Parkinson’s, during this interactive weekend.
