He would often travel great distances in a day to see patients, including to the Allco camp to treat the logging workers as needed. 10. Maple Ridge is the Columbia? — oldest municipality in British Sixth: Maple Ridge was incorporated as a municipality on September 12, 1874. Solomon Mussallem: Originally immigrating to Canada from Lebanon in 1897, Mr. Mussallem lived in Winnipeg, Prince Rupert, and Vancouver before settling in Maple Ridge with his family in 1919 and opening the Haney Garage. He served 23 years in our municipal government, 21 of those years as Mayor. One of his sons, George, was also in politics and served four terms as a MLA. 12. How many people were killed by the Port Haney landslide of 1880? One: In February 1880, a large part of the south bank of the Howison farm slid into the Fraser River. This event became known as the “Haney Slide” and created tsunami- like waves that caused a lot of damage to buildings along the river.

St. John the Divine: This church opened for its first service in Derby in 1859. But, with the construction of the railway bringing a surge of residents to Maple Ridge, it was decided to bring the church across the river. In 1882, a team of people dismantled the church and floated it across the river for reassembly on River Road. Today, St. John the Divine is the oldest church in the Lower Mainland of BC. 14. Japanese: Prior to the internment measures of WW2, the area of Maple Ridge was home to a thriving Japanese population. Most of these families were farmers, specializing in greenhouse techniques and berry farming.

Made from cast iron, the three-tier fountain is shaped like a collar and weighs 26,000 pounds.
