TREKKER TRAKKS Winter 2020 / 2021 NW Tulip Trekkers Volkssport Walking Club From the President Dear Club Members: This will be my last newsletter as President. My second term is ending December 31st. I have enjoyed being President of the NW Tulip Trekkers and am looking forward to continuing to support our club in the position of Trail Master. It has been a pleasure meeting, walking and talking with many of you. We have accomplished much in the last year and a half. Our membership remains steady and continues to thrive and grow despite the pandemic. Some of our older members have not been walking with us and have not renewed their membership. We wish them good health and hope they continue walking on their own. This year, we have added almost forty new members. A lot of you have become regulars at our walks. I started Volkssporting in Fairbanks, Alaska in 1989 with the Farthest North Walk held at the time. We all waited until it warmed up to 20 degrees below zero before they would let us start. We followed this with a second walk at Fort Lewis the same year. We really enjoyed these and we started to go to many walks over the Puget Sound and after Sue joined me in retirement we finally joined the South Sound Walkers and Daffodil Volksswalk Clubs out of Puyallup in 2011. Volkssporting has become a major part of our lives ever since. We live in a beautiful area and my favorite walk continues to be the Friday Harbor walk through the village and then the lunch and camaraderie that is shared with the other walkers waiting for the return ferry. Our club has prepared for the year ahead and continues to step into the future. We did not have a trail master, and my wife Sue sanctioned our walks, posted all walks on MeetUp and added many pictures to that site as well as the AVA site. Tim added our walks to the Online Start Box. We prepared a new walk in Fairhaven for our club that Judy Murphy will be hosting. This walk combines three of our previous walks and will save our club sanction fees without losing our variety of landscapes. JvZ 2020 Dec 3 Page 1
We are continuing to walk with the following new safeguards in place: 1. Everyone must wear a mask to register. 2. If you prefer, bring your own pen to register. 3. Wipes and sanitizer will be available. 4. Please bring exact change - $3.00 for credit walkers. Donations from non-credit walkers are appreciated. No change will be given. 5. If you stamp books, please use the sanitizing pump after stamping. 6. We will continue to follow the governor’s guidelines. Please avoid congregating around the registration table. Start walking immediately after you have registered and walk in groups of not more than 5 people. Keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others, even when wearing a face covering. You will need your mask during the walk whenever physical distancing is not possible. 7. Stay home if you feel sick or have cold or flu symptoms or are in close contact with a person who has tested positive for Covid-19. Note: If you don’t feel comfortable walking with others, all of our physical walk box locations are open and we encourage you to walk all of our beautiful walks. Also, when you are travelling, you can still be walking. The Tulip Trekkers and similar walking clubs in other areas in the U.S. belong to the American Volkssport Association (the AVA). Check out the AVA website at: http://ava.org/. Walks in all states are listed. Milestones Bob Payton--------------800 events, 8,000 km Tamara Belts ------------950 events Sue Payton --------------1,000 events, 10,000 km ONLINE START Box Submitted by Tim Fisher, Vice President, NW Tulip Trekkers We want to make you aware of the American Volkssport Association (AVA) Online Start Box (OSB). The AVA has tutorials which we recommend you review: https://my.ava.org/find-a-tutorial.php?osb_reqs_recs . In order to use the OSB you must set up an account with AVA similar to Apple Pay where you use your credit card to establish a balance. Then, you simply find the walk you want in the OSB section of the AVA events and register for it. You will get a map and walking directions for US $2.00. After completing the walk, you go to the completion section and fill in the details. If you are someone who stamps for events and distance credit you will have to pay one additional dollar (same as the traditional method) and you will be provided an online insert card that can be sent in with your books. The club owning the walk will receive monetary credit from AVA. Walk payment reconciliation will be handled automatically at the quarterly participation submittals. You can donate when you sign up for the walk and NWTT will receive credit for it. We will have all of our NWTT walks online in 2021. Currently, 16 out of 21 are available on OSB. It should be noted that we prefer walkers participating in any of our scheduled group walks use the traditional sign in process to avoid possible confusion. Submitted by Monica Sattler, Secretary, NW Tulip Trekkers I was a Certified Professional Guardian in Seattle and retired about 5 years ago. My husband Dale and I split our time between our home in Shoreline and Big Lake. We actually spend most of our time at Big Lake. I also volunteer for Skagit Hospice. We are new grandparents of a little bundle of joy, Leo. We are fortunate that our daughter and family live in Bellingham. My favorite walk so far is the one in Ferndale. I loved walking on the water through the marsh. We have really enjoyed meeting everyone in the club... When all of this Covid mess is behind us we would like to have the club out to the lake for a picnic. JvZ 2020 Dec 3 Page 4
Submitted by Cheryl Fisher, Treasurer, NW Tulip Trekkers It is my pleasure to serve as Treasurer of NW Tulip Trekkers. Over ten years ago, when I was teaching in the Everett School District and participating in a yearly team building program call “Walktober”, I was entering my daily walking steps when I clicked on a link that took me to the AVA website. Tim and I attended our very first volkswalk that weekend. The walk was in the beautiful Magnolia neighborhood in Seattle. We walked along looking at stately old homes on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. We were immediately hooked on volkswalking and have attended many events in the US and in Canada over the years. When we retired and moved to the Skagit Valley in 2016, we joined NWTT. Doing the various NWTT walks in Skagit, Island, Whatcom, and San Juan counties has allowed us to get to know the northwest corner of our state. Our first walk with NWTT was the walk in Anacortes which continues to be my favorite. Submitted by Penny Friedman, 2021 Vice President for the NW Tulip Trekkers Hello, my name is Penny Friedman. I have lived in Auburn WA for 35 years-I have been a Maternal Child RN for many years. I did Ballroom, Country, Swing, Square, Line and Round Dancing for 15 years until COVID hit. I love the outdoors and the NW Tulip Trekkers walking group. I commute every weekend from Auburn for the walks and to work on my newly acquired land in Custer WA off Birch Bay Lynden Road. My favorite walks are Semiahmoo and Blaine WA which are close to Custer, Birch Bay and Drayton Harbor. I look forward to meeting all of you and serving on the board in 2021.
