London 16-19 January Join your new Harlaxton classmates in the capital city of England. We provide you with a written walking guide, which you can do at your own pace, that takes you to many of London’s famous landmarks: The British Museum; Piccadilly Circus; Trafalgar Square; National Portrait Gallery; National Gallery; Westminster Abbey; Parliament; Big Ben; the Thames River; the London Eye; Buckingham Palace and the Tower of London. Included is transport and admission to Hampton Court Palace on Sunday. Hampton Court was home to many kings and queens, including Henry VIII, and offers fascinating exhibits and beautiful gardens to explore, all linking to your British Studies course. Ireland 12-16 February Our trip to Ireland is based in Dublin where the people are long known for hospitality and their love of music, literature and a full measure of 'craic' (fun). You can walk the River Liffey; view the 9th century Book of Kells at Trinity College; stop in the National Museum to see amazing gold Viking treasures. You could see a play at the Abbey Theatre; visit the trendy Temple Bar area and more. The first day tour takes you across the border to Northern Ireland with a local guide where you'll see Giant's Causeway and stop in Belfast. The second day's tour will be headlined by the world-famous Cliffs of Moher with stops in small picturesque villages along the way. North Wales 21-23 February See North Wales distinct regional identity with its miles of seacoast, Snowdonia mountains, rushing streams and waterfalls and secluded villages, it is one of Britain’s most beautiful locations. The North Wales weekend is regularly ranked by Harlaxton students as one of the top excursions. Enjoy walks along the strand (beach), down the 2,295-ft Llandudno Pier, or up to the Great Orme Park. We drive through the gorgeous Snowdonia National Park and stop at Llechwedd Slate Caverns where you will be taken on a tour of the mines. You will travel into the belly of Llechwedd’s mountain on the steepest cable railway in Britain, and a stop at the spectacular Swallow Falls. Bath & Stonehenge 28-1 February/March Engulf yourself in the rich city of Bath's natural hot springs that led the Romans to build a temple to Minerva Sulis and to establish a network of mineral baths. Bath is also well known for its outstanding Georgian architecture, including the must-see Royal Crescent and The Assembly Rooms. The novelist Jane Austen lived in Bath for several years and set two of her novels in the city. We also stop at the very beautiful Salisbury Cathedral, home of one of the four original copies of Magna Carta before making our way to the iconic Stonehenge. Stratford 7 March It was in Stratford-upon-Avon that William Shakespeare was born; he was educated and married here before moving to London. A ticket admitting you to all the various Shakespeare properties in the town is included in this trip. In addition, Stratford is a very pretty town situated along the River Avon filled with historical architecture, wonderful shops of all kinds and a wide choice of dining options. It is also home to the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Company and you will attend an evening performance of a Shakespeare play at the newly renovated theatre. Lake District 12-15 March The Lake District is one of Britain’s most popular tourist destinations and on this trip you’ll see why. The unsurpassed natural beauty, the numerous literary and art connections, and the opportunity to challenge yourself in outdoor pursuits all combine for a top-ranking experience. Our hostel accommodation fronts Lake Windermere and among one of the many things to do in the area is a boat trip across the lake from Ambleside to Bowness. The hostel hosts a small bar and restaurant and there are several pubs, restaurants and shops in the nearby town. You have the option to participate in organized outdoor activities at an additional cost. You will need warm/waterproof clothing and appropriate footwear for this trip. Paris 25-29 March Find out why Paris boasts of its beauty with a crepe, baguette or frites in hand. See the sights of the Eiffel Tower; Notre Dame Cathedral; Louvre Museum; Rodin; Picasso; Monet and the enticing collections of the Musee D’Orsay; The Luxembourg Gardens; The Tuileries or take a stroll along the banks of the Seine. You may wish to take short train journey to spend part of one day at Versailles or the Normandy beaches are accessible on a long day trip from Paris. Scotland 3-5 April Explore Edinburgh where you can walk down the Mile with stops at the modern Scottish Parliament buildings, the Palace of Holyroodhouse (the Queen’s Edinburgh residence), St Giles Cathedral (home church of Presbyterianism), or perhaps the Whisky Heritage Centre. The traditional climb up Arthur’s Seat will give you expansive views over the city and out to the Firth of Forth. Visit the Grassmarket and New Town for shops and cafés. The Scottish National Gallery has an outstanding collection, and the Botanic Garden is one of the best in Great Britain; both are free to visit. As the location where J.K. Rowling wrote most of the Harry Potter books, there are plenty of Potter-themed places to explore. Don’t forget to try haggis, buy a kilt, or source a traditional tartan scarf. Italy 23-1 April/May Visit three of Italy's most glorious cities all in one trip. Rome, Florence and Venice each have their own unique history and character to be explored. One trip starts in Rome and makes its way through Florence before concluding in Rome. The other traverses the country in the opposite direction by starting in Venice and concluding in Rome. At the conclusion of this nine day trip will be your return flight back home.
