CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Positions and Benefits: Position Title: Trainee Civil Engineer Grading: Grading will be commensurate with experience and level of study completed. Trainee wages will apply and conditions are in accordance with the Local Government (State) Award 2014. Duration: The duration of the traineeship is time to allow successful completion of tertiary study in the nominated degree. Council cannot guarantee employment following completion of the traineeship. Salary: Trainees with no qualifications and little or no experience will commence at the T4 salary which is $619.50. Trainees with some previous relevant qualifications/experience or commencement of studies may commence at a higher level. Salary progression is based upon satisfactory completion of studies and on-the-job performance. Award: Local Government (State) Award 2014. Tertiary Study: Trainees will be required to undertake tertiary studies in a Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent. Continued employment at Council will require satisfactory progress to be made in both on-the-job performance and in the completion of tertiary studies The program provides students with the knowledge and skills that are necessary to commence practice as a Civil Engineer. Specifically the program provides students with a core of basic generic and technical skills, common to all branches of civil engineering. Tertiary Fees: Council will pay up front tertiary fees and other course expenses for Trainees undertaking Council approved undergraduate studies, but will not pay costs where the employee is repeating a unit. Study Leave: Trainees will also be given study leave to attend residential schools, examinations or other workshops which are compulsory components of their course. Pre-placement Medical: An offer of employment for this position is subject to medical clearance to verify that you are safely able to undertake the duties of the position. Pre-employment medical examinations are at Council’s expense. Hours of Work: Permanent, full-time, 35 hours per week including a rostered day off once per fortnight. FORBES SHIRE COUNCIL POSITION DESCRIPTION TRAINEE CIVIL ENGINEER DEPARTMENT ENGINEERING & TECHNICAL SERVICES HOURS FULL-TIME BAND / LEVEL TRAINEE BAND SECTIONAL STRUCTURE Technical Services Manager Senior Design Engineer Trainee Civil Engineer CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The successful applicant will be required to satisfactorily progress and complete a Degree in Civil Engineering OR a Diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent. It is noted that Council cannot guarantee employment as a qualified professional following successful completion of the chosen course of study and employment would cease at that time. Key Accountabilities 1. Undertaking a variety of civil engineering related functions in conjunction with Councils training program, including surveying, setout, CAD design, asset data collection, assisting Councils design section and other projects as directed by the Manager of Technical Services 2. Achieving a satisfactory result (pass minimum) in Tertiary/University training. 3. To learn the processes and techniques associated with construction and maintenance activities and their engineering underpinnings in Local Government 4. Attending and following instructions in all on the job training and employment. 5. Submitting timely, relevant and well prepared reports as requested by the Manager, Director or General Manager. 6. Assessing and improving work practices and procedures on a continuous basis to achieve or exceed Forbes Shire Council’s strategic goals. 7. Contributing to improved organisational effectiveness by acting ethically, honestly and with fairness. 8. Demonstrating commitment to identifying and following Forbes Shire Council’s values, policies and procedures. 9. Providing customer service to the community including answering enquiries from the public and reporting issues for further action. 10. Identifying and reporting problems in and around the workplace to ensure they are promptly addressed. 11. Cooperating with the supervisor in the measures taken to ensure occupational health and safety. 13. To work as a cooperative team member and contribute to the enhancement of team outputs SELECTION CRITERIA Essential Criteria 1. Current enrolment in or eligibility to enrol in a relevant Degree in Civil Engineering OR currently enrolled or eligible to enrol in a Diploma or Certificate IV in Civil Engineering or equivalent. 2. Possess good analytical and problem solving skills 3. Demonstrated report writing skills. 4. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with other staff and members of the community. 5. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a highly motivated and enthusiastic team. 6. Developed interpersonal and conflict resolution skills 7. Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in, the use of word processing packages, database, spreadsheet and email applications. 8. Class C drivers licence. Desirable Criteria 1. Commencement of tertiary studies in Civil Engineering or a related discipline 2. Experience in the use of Civil CAD and/or Auto CAD 3. Selection Process Forbes Shire Council is committed to providing a fair and equitable selection process. The stages of the selection process are as follows: 1. Short-listing- The selection panel (usually 3 members) will assess all applications against the selection criteria contained in the position description. .The panel will then decide which applicants best meet the criteria and will call for interview. 2. Interviewing- You will be given at least 3 days notice if you are required for an interview. The interview panel will consist of 3 members, one of which will be a HR representative, who will work together to recommend the most suitable person for the position. 3.
