Spring 2019 Welcome to our brand new list which features exciting new agencies, new wines and the latest vintage releases from all of our key producers. Pricing includes the new duty rates which came into effect on 1 February 2019. We spent a lot of time searching for the right partner in Argentina, but it was worth it, and we are delighted to announce our appointment as exclusive UK agent for Tinto Negro. Born of the long- time friendship and professional collaboration between Alejandro Sejanovich and Jeff Mausback, colleagues at Bodega Catena Zapata for almost 15 years, these stunning wines truly reflect the heart and soul of Malbec in Mendoza, exploring the terroirs and gradually isolating unique vineyard sites and winemaking techniques which can showcase the heights of concentration and complexity to which Malbec can aspire. Also new for Spring 2019 is Chablis Domaine Gueguen, an exciting new estate established by Céline and Frédéric Gueguen. Céline comes from a family of winegrowers and after working for her father, Jean-Marc Brocard for 15 years, Céline and Frederic decided to go it along in 2013 and create their own wines. The wines are terrific and offer exceptional value. We look forward to working with you in 2019 and if you are new to Genesis Wines, introducing you to our wines and services. We would love to hear your continued feedback on how we are doing; please feel free to get in touch with one of us at any time. FRANCE Champagne Champagne Champagne Sélèque, Pierry The story of the House of Sélèque began in 1965, when Henri Sélèque planted his first plots of vines with the help of his father- in-law, Jean Bagnost (then president of the Pierry wine cooperative). The third generation arrived in 2008 – Jean-Marc joined the estate after studying wine and travelling abroad. He has brought new life and a very personal approach to making Champagne. Their vineyards currently represent 7.5 hectares of vines across seven villages in the Marne valley and the Côte des Blancs slopes, three of which are classified as Premier Cru (Pierry, Dizy,Vertus). The grape varieties are dominated by Chardonnay (60%), followed by Meunier (30%) and Pinot Noir (10%). Jean-Marc ploughs his vineyard to encourage root development and microbial life in the soil. He also believes in preventive measures to combat disease and favour balance and biodiversity. The farming is carried out by a team of five people throughout the year. Jean-Marc is looking for purity, balance and elegance in his Champagne and we certainly think that his wines do not lack charm nor personality. These wines have also caught the attention of leading critics including Hugh Johnson who wrote that Jean-Marc is the “Coming young star of Pierry…” and makes “brilliant Chardonnay, Pinot Noir/Meunier cuvées.” This was included in his Champagne Growers to Watch piece. James Suckling, when tasting the Solessence NV, awarded it 92/100 points and wrote, “Really attractive tropical chardonnay with mango and papaya notes. This has plenty of energetic fruit and speaks of good ripeness. The palate has more biscuity and spicy flavors. Extremely supple and smooth, with great depth and balance.” Code Wine Case size £ per bottle £ per case CHG210NVS Solessence, Extra Brut NV 6x75 £23.50 £141.00 Certified Organic Certified Biodynamic Organic cultivation Biodynamic cultivation. FRANCE Champagne Champagne Gosset, Aÿ We are delighted to have added Gosset to our portfolio. The wines have a great following and, as a small quality-driven house, are not sold via the multiples, making them a perfect pouring brand for the premium on-trade. Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. It was founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, an alderman and wine-grower who made mostly red wines. At that time, the region’s still wines competed for pride of place on the best tables of France with the wines of Beaune, which were made from the same grape varieties as they are today. In the 18th century, Gosset joined their neighbours and began to make the sparkling wines for the first time. It was at this time that the house adopted the unique antique flask-shaped bottle that is still used today. Gosset’s wines are characterised by their purity and expressiveness. Grapes come mainly from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards surrounding Epernay and their winemaking style is characterised by minimal intervention, extended ageing and no malolactic fermentation. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the house’s focus. Since 1993, Gosset has been owned by the Renaud Cointreau family who have sought to protect the quality and character of their wines. This has led them to keep production levels moderate and to respect the history of the house along with the integrity of the region and its vineyards. An exciting new addition to the range is the great value Extra Brut Cuvée, which is open and expressive and perfect as a house pour. It shows fresh flavours of apricot and white peach on the nose with hawthorn undertones. On the palate, the citrus notes come through with precision and are balanced by the richness of the fruit flavours. FRANCE Bordeaux Bordeaux Château Hourtin-Ducasse, Haut-Médoc The Château is based in the small village of Le Fournas, with 23 hectares bordering the acclaimed vineyards of Pauillac. Michel and Marie-Noëlle Marengo have been co-owners and winemakers at the property since 1975. Michel is hugely attentive in the vineyards and works incredibly hard ensuring the health of the vines. Formulating his own organic fertiliser using essential oils and sowing oats in between the vines to protect from weeds are just a couple of the methods used. While not certified, the estate is farmed organically and biodynamic methods are used throughout. Michel will not abandon this, and despite issues in previous years which have caused many of his neighbours to revert back to chemicals he has stood firm with his approach. There is no formula and the blend is crafted to give the perfect expression of each particular vintage. Indeed, in 2012 Michel was not happy with the fruit and felt the wine would not truly represent the estate so no wine was produced which speaks volumes for the commitment to quality. FRANCE Bordeaux Château Penin The property is family owned since 1854 and it was not until 1964 was the production solely destined for winemaking purposes. That year, Hubert Carteyron started exploring the full potential of the wine industry and focused all its efforts into making great quality Bordeaux wine. Later on, his son Patrick, a fifth generation winemaker, joined him and together they’re working on the, currently, 40 hectares vineyard area and export almost half of their production to Europe, the U.S. and Asia. The 2015 vintage was exceptional in Bordeaux, indeed the Château Clinet received scores of 99/100 by James Suckling and 97/100 by The Wine Advocate. FRANCE Burgundy Burgundy Domaine Gueguen, Chablis The Gueguen family is based in the hamlet of Préhy, just 7km south-west of Chablis. The Domaine was created in January 2013 by husband and wife, Céline and Frédéric. With 23 ha of vines under their management, they have 35 plots at their disposal to handcraft every single wine. Despite the relative youthfulness of this domaine, Céline has always been around wine. Indeed, she happens to be the daughter of Jean-Marc Brocard, owner of the largest bio-dynamic estate in Chablis. Frédéric also has a wealth of experience in winemaking as he worked for his uncle, Jean Durup, before joining his father-in-law, Jean-Marc Brocard for 15 years. The range is extremely coherent and the wines produced here all share a common denominator which seems to be the purity of their wines. Textbook Chablis with a real sense of honesty and no make-up. Do not overlook the Bourgogne Chardonnay Les Côtes Salines which offers exceptional value for money. The wines are all fermented in stainless steel only using indigenous yeasts. FRANCE Burgundy Vincent Dauvissat, Chablis Along with François Raveneau, Dauvissat is unquestionably Chablis’ greatest producer, owning some of the oldest and best vineyards. As the torch has been passed down from generation to generation, little has changed here - the practices are still classic. If anything, the wines have become increasingly profound since Vincent Dauvissat joined his father, René, in the 1970s. Vincent prefers natural farming, using vine treatments sparingly, if at all. The fruit is harvested by hand and not de-stemmed; fermentation is part in enameled steel vats and part in wood, and all aging is in six to eight-year-old barrels. We are lucky to get an allocation of these wines once a year which goes fast! Please contact us for more information. Since being established in 1850 by Claude Derey in the commune of Couchey, there have been six generations who have continued the tradition, gradually increasing their holdings by acquiring clay-limestone plots, the secret behind every great Burgundy. Carefully controlled yields, manual harvesting with strict checks, slow maceration and moderate pressing result in wines that fully express their true potential! Stephen Brook was particularly complimentary about these wines when tasting part of the range for a Decanter feature. About the 2015 Marsannay he wrote “very juicy red fruit nose, close to being jammy. Lush and forthright, the palate is quite concentrated and very ripe, but not blowsy, and has an attractive bite of acidity and light tannins on the finish. Invigorating and charming,” and the Fixin 1er Cru: “lean, elegant red fruit nose. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and juicy. Balanced and attractive”. FRANCE Burgundy Domaine Tortochot, Gevrey-Chambertin This family estate is run by Chantal Tortochot. All the vineyards are certified organic, are hand-harvested and the resulting wines are not fined or filtered, and are fermented using indigenous yeast varieties. This is a wonderfully charming, traditional estate that produces textbook Gevrey Chambertin. Chantal’s wines are elegant and fleshy, bright and concentrated all at once. They are exceptional expressions of their individual terroirs. 10 of the 11 ha are in Gevrey-Chambertin including plots in 3 different lieu dits, 2 1er Crus, including the famous Lavaux St. Jacques and 4 Grand Cru vineyards. Chantal owns a tiny strip of vines amounting to 7 rows in the famed Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. The average age of the vines across the totality of the Domaine is over 50 years old. Needless to say, this Domaine, which is now run by brothers, Thierry and Fabrice Amiot, possesses an impressive line-up of Premier Crus, with Les Caillerets and the famous Puligny Premier Cru Les Demoiselles being perhaps their most desirable, after the illustrious Le Montrachet. The wines are aged in 30% new oak for 12 months, with the intention to reflect a perfect imprint of the vintage every year. FRANCE Burgundy Domaine Hubert Lamy, St. Aubin Without doubt the finest estate in St Aubin, the Domaine was founded by Hubert Lamy in 1973. His son Olivier, after studying and gaining winemaking experience in estates around the world, returned in 1995. The goal of Olivier is to produce wines which express purity, precision and minerality; year after year the results are exceptional. St Aubin is undoubtedly an area in the ascendency. With a slightly cooler climate in comparison to other villages in the Côtes de Beaune, recent warmer vintages have been a great benefit to St Aubin and it can be hard to match the freshness, added complexity and elegance brought on from the steep slopes of the appellation. The 13 ha estate is split equally between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and strict selection of fruit is at the core of the family’s philosophy. The grapes are entirely hand-harvested for strict selection of only the best fruit and then manually sorted by hand. FRANCE Burgundy Domaine Laurent Mouton, Givry Laurent Mouton is a young and unassuming Givry producer. His wines are modern and pure, expressing classic Burgundian Pinot Noir characteristics. The Clos Jus is a class act, intense and spicy with great length and a nice mineral finish. The walled Clos Jus vineyard is on an east-facing hillside looking out to Chalon-sur-Saône. This ideal, sloping site, with stony, red clay and limestone soil, was recognised as the fnest hillside site in Givry before phylloxera. The entire slope was then abandoned and only cleared and replanted in 1990, with the Mouton family being one of the prime instigators of this development. We have been working with Christophe for several years now and as each one goes by he continues to confirm that he is one of the stand-out producers of the Mâconnais. His wines have the style and balance of more illustrious villages further north but with his trade- mark of added concentration. He also succeeds in expressing the differences in terrior of all his vineyards; producing wines that vary in texture, flavour and minerality. FRANCE Burgundy Manoir du Carra, Denice, Beaujolais The wines from Manoir du Carra are far from your cheap and cheerful house plonk often associated with the region. Opting to make wines of depth and elegance that are loyal to their terroir, it is clear from their range that each region of Beaujolais has a very distinct personality. Although all the wines drink incredibly well young, the Cru wines will also age very gracefully. Critical acclaim is widespread. Indeed, in the latest review of over 300 Beaujolais for The Wine Advocate, the 2015 Moulin-à- Vent Les Burdelines received a score of 93 points. With 90+ points on all wines tasted in the latest review by Antonio Galloni at Vinous.com, it is clear that we have a producer sitting at the forefront of quality in the region. FRANCE Northern Rhône Northern Rhône Jean-Luc Jamet, “Le Vallin” Ampuis One of the most famous names of the Northern Rhône, Domaine Jamet has long been a benchmark in Côte Rôtie. After over 20 years of Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul running the domaine, in 2013 the brothers split the estate and the next chapter of the Jamet story began. The secret behind the decades of success is that some of the greatest sites in Côte Rôtie have been owned by the Domaine and now lie in Jean-Luc’s hands. The 2015 includes grapes from sites in La Landonne and Lancement. While Jean-Luc was toiling among the vines and in the cellars Jean-Paul was the face of the operation. So, needless to say, his skill, knowledge and experience of crafting these legendary wines has continued through into his own eponymous domaine. FRANCE Northern Rhône Natacha Chave, Mercurol, Domaine Aléofane Natacha is the younger sister of the prominent winemaker Yann Chave and it is obvious that a nose for quality parcels of vines runs in the family. Striking out on her own only a few years ago she makes just two wines for now: a Saint Joseph from a small 1.5 hectare plot, and a Crozes Hermitage from old vines. Her wines are certified organic and she also uses several biodynamic preparations in the vineyards. Not so, the name Gaillard is interchangeable with Condrieu wines of the very best quality. As well as the Northern Rhône, the ever busy vigneron has projects in Collioure (see Domaine Madeloc) and Faugeres. FRANCE Southern Rhône Henri Bonneau, Châteauneuf du Pape Bonneau’s Châteauneufs, particularly the mythic Réserve des Célestins, are not only fantastically complex, immense and capable of decades of development; they are also endowed with that rare and magical sense of extra dimension found only in the greatest wines. Henri represented the 12th generation of his family to make wine in Châteauneuf du Pape, dating back to 1667, and his methods had more in common with the 17th century than with contemporary winemaking. FRANCE Loire Loire Domaine La Clef du Récit, Sancerre Anthony Girard, is a young and friendly winegrower; driven and dynamic, he quickly knew that his objective would be to start out on his own. During his winemaking studies he worked with François Villard and Stéphane Ogier, stars of the Northern Rhône. He then took the opportunity to improve his skills by working around the world: New Zealand, Chile and Hungary, to name a few. Feeling strongly attached to Sancerre, he actively looked for an estate to take over in his native region. In 2012 he finally became the owner of an 8.5 ha property and vinified his first wine, officially opening in 2015. The wines are seriously impressive, and even more so when considering how few years he’s been operating. In 2016 critical acclaim finally came to Anthony Girard through Decanter’s Panel Tasting of 2015 Sancerre Blancs, in which his received 95 points. FRANCE Loire Domaine Poiron Dabin, Château-Thébaud, Muscadet For generations the Poiron and Dabin families have grown vines in the Pays Nantais. There is even a solicitor’s deed relating to the sharing of parcels of vines in 1858 still in existence today. The two families came together through the marriage of Jean Poiron and Thérèse Dabin. Today their sons, Jean-Michel and Laurent Poiron, together with Jean-Michel’s wife Sandrine, manage 67 hectares of vines. Specialising in Muscadet, they use traditional winemaking techniques leaving the wine to rest on its lees for 14 months. The results are superb: excellent flavour with wonderful, white flower and mineral aromas. Decanter have been keeping an eye on the increasing level of quality in the region, and in 2017 penned a piece entitled “Muscadet Wines: Time to think again”, which brought together 100 examples of single ‘cru’ wines. The judges were blown away by the quality overall, awarding the Poiron-Dabin Château Thébaud 2009 with a score of 98 points. It was rated as ‘Exceptional’, featuring in all three reviewers’ top choices, with huge acclaim for the wine across the board. These wines are then vinified under his direction and bottled under the Complices de Loire label. The vineyards of Complices de Loire extend over 16 hectares of vines, with marginally more devoted to white wines (9 hectares). The vines grow on soils of clay, sand, gravel or limestone. FRANCE Loire Michel Redde et Fils, Pouilly Fumé Michel Redde et Fils is a well respected producer whose wine growing family dates back to 1630, when François Redde grew wines in Pouilly-Sur-Loire. Michel took over in the 1950s and incorporated a tasting cellar called “La Moynerie” after the monks who used to be the main producers of wine in France. Michel expanded the property considerably, to the 85 acres it is today, before passing the estate onto his son, Thierry, in 1977. Thierry and his sons are now the 13th and 14th generations of winemakers in the family. All this experience has led to a reputation for consistent quality and excellence in the Redde brand that is second to none in the area. Jamie Goode visited the impressive flint-covered vineyards of the Barre à Mine wine in 2017 and wrote: “It’s a labour of love, and a celebration of a remarkable terroir. The first wines are just lovely, and very distinctive. When the vines have some age, this will be a stunning vineyard!” He awarded the 2015 vintage 94 points. However, it wasn’t until 1894 that the Kuentz and Bas families united their winemaking endeavours due to the marriage of Marie Kuentz and André Bas, and the consequent building of their shared cellar. With joined forces the estate prospered and became a voice for Alsatian winemaking throughout France and further afield. Nowadays it is owned by Jean-Baptiste Adam, from the famous Alsatian Adam family, who pushed the use of biodynamic methods within the vineyard. Along with winemaker and ex-sommelier Samuel Tottoli, they have successfully created a range of sustainable, authentic, food-friendly wines that beautifully express their varietals and terroir.. Regardless of whether the wine is from their entry-level “Tradition” range, or from the Grand Cru “Trois Chateaux” range, when poured out to James Suckling, they are always highly rated! All the wines that were selected for him to taste from the 2013 and 2014 vintages received between 88 and 93 points.
