Tortona Design Week 2019: #DESIGNOW An edition dedicated to modernity, new proposals and great guests is about to begin Milan, 9 - 14 April 2019 | A new edition of Tortona Design Week, an unmissable appointment of Fuorisalone, is about to start, fueled by a mix of big names and new proposals, product and service innovation, technology and tradition. This network of exhibitors, events, locations and activities has always embodied the broadest sense of Milan Design Week. Always full of surprises and content, Tortona Design Week 2019 is a magnifying glass focusing on contemporary life and the spirit of the times. Projects in the name of research, technology and experimentation show us the present — the here and #NOW— and reveal the role of #DESIGN in responding to society's needs. Tortona Design Week 2019 is once again a reflection of reality, a narrative tool that offers the public an unprecedented perspective and interpretation of modern life. Through their projects, companies and designers offer ideas for interpreting new needs and understanding the direction taken by today’s trends in designing experiences, products and services. Experiments, products and synergies will be presented in a series of events combining an international dimension and the local realities of this vibrant urban area of the city. In the name of modernity, impressive innovative services have been created for the area to add a new dimension to this design story and facilitate public access and orientation: 1. An augmented reality system developed in collaboration with Sense - immaterial Reality; 2. TDW Infopoints, genuine landmark totems designed by Alfonso Femia, guest architect of the district; 3. The new edition of Casello Giallo, a space celebrating fusion and hospitality; 4. Architours, organized by the Tortona Area Lab Association in collaboration with AIM - Associazione Interessi Metropolitani; 5. TDW Press Hub by DBOX, a press area inside the Magna Pars Hotel and Event Space; 6. TORTONA TENSEGRITY: an installation on Largo delle Culture by Francesco Librizzi architect
Some of the protagonists of the 2019 edition are Fabio Novembre, Aldo Cibic, Ikea, Lexus, Honda, German Design Council, Corraini Edizioni, Delta Light, Novartis, Union Corporation, Keio University, and more. AUGMENTED REALITY Tortona Design Week 2019 has decided to add an innovative narrative method, accompanying visitors all along the exhibition route with a new system of interpretation: an augmented reality project developed in collaboration with Sense - immaterial Reality. With just a few simple steps, when you point your smart phone at a marker in each exhibition location, you will gain access to experiential content that will allow you to immediately enter the heart of the project. The augmented reality service will also be present on all communication tools of the area, providing access, through multisensory experiences, to more information about the event. Tortona Design Week has chosen to use and promote a system that the design world itself deals with more and more: from prototyping to the Buying Session phase and marketing campaigns, immaterial objects make it possible to optimize and speed up processes, increase the impact on the market and the perception towards the end user, all in the name of sustainability and respect for the planet. ------- GUEST ARCHITECT: ALFONSO FEMIA FOR TDW INFOPOINTS Alfonso Femia - Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia (AF517) is the guest architect of this new edition: he designed the TDW Infopoints, three genuine landmarks created as cardinal points of the area, marking the boundaries and coordinates of Tortona Design Week 2019. The volumes, with their peculiar and iconic profile, will become familiar symbols of the district as well as an important tool for providing and sharing information. The first Infopoint will be located on the Porta Genova square, while the others will be on Via Tortona (on Largo delle Culture and on Via Stendhal at the corner of Via Tortona). “A door, a portal, a gate, it is actually a "marker" of an area that is real image of a city within a city. Via Tortona in Milan is an osmotic, pneumatic place when in its dense moments it welcomes and gathers ideas, people, looks and steps. Its interiors become exteriors, and its streets become squares. It is a system of colorful sheets folded to form a contemporary teepee. Each identifies a point on a map of different routes, hosting within it the thousands of names, words, images, designs and passions that transpire during a few days. This system within a system reacts to light on its different sides, created and produced through a generous dialog of material, amidst light and shadow, pause and
movement that dissolves in a point stretching toward the sky. It is ephemeral, real, virtual, and imaginary.” Alfonso Femia ------- TORTONA TENSEGRITY: AN INSTALLATION BY FRANCESCO LIBRIZZI ON LARGO DELLE CULTURE The flower bed of Largo delle Culture is an emblematic narrative space. This year, it features the evocative installation by architect Francesco Librizzi, created in collaboration with Silver Tre S.r.l. Through the extrusion of Tortona Design Week logo, Francesco Librizzi created a light architectural structure on the rotunda, suggesting and evoking the presence of a pergola that protects and reveals the urban garden. Tortona Tensegrity is a segment of a possible architectural structure that through augmented reality can be perceived and viewed in its entirety — an imposing structure that characterizes the entire flower bed. The presence of slender columns under tension is a reference to the potential space of the garden and the rotunda that contains it. The term Tensegrity was coined in the 1960s by Buckminster Fuller as the crasis of the words Tensional Integrity and indicates a structure where compressed parts are isolated within a network of elements under tension. The result is a space in which solid elements seem to levitate in space in a suspended structural dialectic. Tortona Tensegrity is a project promoted by Tortona Design Week that narrates and represents not only the companies and designers who choose the district during the Fuorisalone week, but also the identity and soul of the area: its real life, public spaces, urban greenery and the places frequented all year round by the locals and visitors. ------- CASELLO GIALLO OF TORTONA DESIGN WEEK 2019 A new edition for the space promoted by Tortona Locations to offer the public an oasis combining performance art and street food. Facing the tracks of the ancient Porta Genova station, on the corner of Via Savona and Via Tortona, CASELLO GIALLO is an authentic secret garden, the beating heart of Tortona Design Week 2019, where you can sip excellent cocktails and beers and enjoy the best street food, accompanied by Live Painting and artistic performances. ------- ARCHITOURS Returning again this year are the free Architours of the district, organized by Tortona Area Lab Association during Fuorisalone week to explore — guided by expert architects and created for visitors, professionals, students and fans of
architecture and design — some of the most interesting places in the area. Organized in collaboration with AIM - Associazione Interessi Metropolitani, a non-profit organization specializing in the study and promotion of urban transformations in Milan, the tours (by reservation only) last about 2 hours and are for groups of a maximum of 30 people. This year will be the turn of three emblematic places linking fashion and design: Armani Silos, the Labyrinth of Arnaldo Pomodoro and the Ferré Foundation. Tour times: 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday For Architours reservations and more information: eventi@aim.milano.it ------- THE PROTAGONISTS Two big names in international design will be guests in the district: - Fabio Novembre, who designed the DBOX project at the Magna Pars Hotel and Event Space; - Aldo Cibic, who in the spaces of the Savona 18 Suites boutique hotel presents his work and career through the exhibition called Aesthetics of vitality. Fabio Novembre designed the innovative DBOX idea container: the architect, who translates the concept of the universal embrace into powerful aesthetics, interprets the spaces from a perspective of Inclusiveness and Sharing, where the visitor's path winds through areas that are divided and linked by color. DBOX is not an installation, but a conceptual project created to welcome dis- similar expressions of design, art and lifestyles. Color is the protagonist, invading the spaces with different shades like a sort of three-dimensional infographics for the public that showcases the exhibition and offers moments of relaxation for visitors. The DBOX features projects of: NICHELCROM, SAMMONTANA, POM GLASS, LAMBORGHINI, DOMUS ACADEMY, CLINICA DEL COIN OP, FABER, FDI, HAUSBRANDT, MACEVI MADEA, NIO, OLMAR, REDBULL, TABADA DESIGN, THE BREATH, THE WAY by LAZZARINI. Aldo Cibic chose one of his most recent projects — the Savona 18 Suites — to engage with the visitor on the varied and multifaceted path of his poetic vision, seeking to represent a vibrant aesthetic. In the spaces already permanently furnished with his furniture and objects, Cibic will insert a series of drawings, photographs and installations for his Aesthetics of Vitality exhibition that will create a story through images, shapes, colors and functions. Along with photographs and drawings by the designer, the exhibition will present pieces by
Memphis, which will allow us to get a glimpse of the way in which Cibic's language has evolved; new and self-produced furnishings such as the Pankina chair, the Ellissima modular bookcase, and the Otto table; objects from the Standard collection; products designed for Paola C., Fratelli Boffi, Venini, Slow Wood, and Ghidini1961; and Blumohito installations. ------- TORTONA DESIGN WEEK PRESS HUB BY DBOX The heart of the Tortona Design Week story will be the Press Hub, located this year at Magna Pars (via Tortona 15): during the week accredited national and international journalists will be able to use this institutional and hospitality area as an infrastructure for planning their itineraries in the best possible way and collecting material and information on exhibitors. The press preview of the district will be held on Monday, April 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and all exhibition spaces will be open and visible to journalists. ------- TORTONA DESIGN WEEK 2019 SPONSOR DELTA LIGHT Monumental golden spheres will take the stage at Delta Light’s installations in Zona Tortona. At the end of Via Privata Gaspare Bugatti Delta Light will be opening its brand-new showroom with a remarkable installation, which will communicate with the Boccino field in the beginning of the street. Massive golden orbs will create an infinite mirrored field that distorts and duplicates your reflection as you move through it. Known as a magical and three-dimensional object, spheres reflect everything around them, creating exciting interpretations of and contrasts with its surroundings. When illuminated they create many different gradients of light and shadow, resulting in an ongoing play of perception. Pure Lighting Pleasure! For this specific moment the spheres have multiple meanings for Delta Light. Clustered in different sizes they refer to molecules, the foundation of all, metaphorically suggesting the rebirth of a new world and Delta Light’s new strategy, team and approach for the Italian market. At the Boccino field in the beginning of the street, the same spheres and concept will be used for its playful character, connecting with the installation in the Delta Light showroom, and at the same time referring to the jeu de boules played here throughout the year. GALLO The new Limited Edition terry socks GALLO Design Week 2019, which have conquered the design addicted around the world, are on sale in the Temporary Store at the Drogheria space in Via Tortona 19 from 6th to 14th April. The ever-changing skyline of Milan is tinged with fluorescent green and inspires the new Gallo socks in Limited Edition for Design Week 2019. Collectable socks to amaze with an athletic and brave touch that won’t miss at the feet of trendsetters. During the week, the location will also host other special projects. GALLO - Drogheria, via Tortona 19 LABORATOIRES FILORGA PARIS In partnership with Tortona Design Week and in the heart of the Tortona District, Filorga opens the doors of their #NoFilterSkin Lab, a pop-up lounge in Largo delle Culture, where the star is the new re-oxigenating and brightening line Oxygen-Glow. The Filorga #nofilterskin experience takes shape amidst pink neon lights, designated beauty areas and photo shoots: guests can try the Oxygen- Glow products with a complimentary mini-treatment and commemorate their own selfie-ready skin with a photo booth #nofilter or with photos taken by young artists. The brand has designed this space to be a dialogue between cosmetics science and contemporaneity where a skincare routine, with the literal meaning of “taking care of one’s skin”, meets today’s aesthetic needs. Right at the center of the beauty Lab, the “#nofilterskin pink-net wall” stands out. In this photographic installation, every day there will be an exhibition of the lounge guests #nofilter portraits shot by young photographers that use social media as a privileged means of expression. This pink net transforms into a physical exhibition of a digital visual world and focuses on that “nude” beauty that is constantly echoed on line where #nofilter and #nomakeup hashtags have more than 200 million and 17 million posts respectively on the Instagram, almost as it were an invitation to be once again in harmony with one’s image. Animated by creative laboratories, showrooms, ateliers and exhibition spaces, in 2000 the district opened its doors to the public during Fuorisalone, giving life to the renowned format of which it has since been one of the symbols par excellence. The events, which combine an international dimension and the realities of this vibrant urban area of the city, have always presented the experiments, products and synergies of well-established and up- and-coming companies and addressed a varied and qualified international
audience. A vibrant atmosphere characterizes the district not only during Milan Design Week, but also all year long thanks to important companies established in the area: from the most recent spaces of the former Ansaldo complex — with Mudec and the BASE — and Armani / Silos, up to the most consolidated presence of Fendi, Ermenegildo Zegna, Superstudio, Moncler, Herno, Harmont & Blaine, Agnona, Isaia, and more. TORTONA AREA LAB ASSOCIATION Tortona Design Week is a project promoted by Tortona Area Lab, a non-profit association founded in 2010 to promote all types of artistic, cultural, recreational and social activities for the enhancement, development and promotion of the Milan metropolitan area around Via Tortona. Tortona Area Lab coordinates the activities and events of Tortona Design Week, the participation of exhibitors, and the coordinated image and communication of the network. Tortona Design Week is a territorial marketing project aimed at showcasing events, installations, exhibitions and projects that have joined the network and take place during Milan Design Week in the locations of the historic district that includes Via Tortona, Via Savona, Via Forcella and surrounding areas.
