West Cork Creates has invited 34 Cork-based Artists and Craftspeople from a diverse range of disciplines to create innovative, artistic responses to this year’s theme “Into the Woods”, in which artists and craftspeople consider their personal responses to, and experiences of, woodland and forest environments. On show will be artwork that illustrates the makers emotional connection to woodlands as well as pieces that can be made using the fruits of the forest, figurative and abstract works and pieces which reflect the importance of trees and woodlands in the environment. This exhibition will show fine art, sculpture, textiles, furniture, photography, ceramics, silver and goldsmithing, collage and prints, all under one roof. The aim is to connect the maker with the market and enable the audience to experience beautiful, original art works inspired by the West Cork landscape. Opening Saturday August 10th at 1pm

A data-artist, who turns information into three-dimensional sculptures, Adrien’s work has been exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Adrien’s degree is in Furniture Design from the California College of the Arts, where she focused on the principles of design and fabrication of furniture and sculpture, including woodworking, metalworking, welding, and casting. She also worked with non-functional forms and began using data in her work. Data remains an integral part of her work,sShe aims to unearth and reveal a “story” from swathes of data already available on a particular subject. Workshops Fota House & Gardens Woven Willow Platters 1 Fota House & Gardens Sun 18th Aug : 1-5pm ¤50 including all materials, (¤40 for CCD Members) 10 people max / booking required In this half day class with Basketmaker Rosemary Kavanagh, we will weave a couple of variations of willow platters (also known as tension trays)- getting the chance to play around with the natural colours of willow and learn basic traditional techniques. These trays are very attractive and functional, a beautiful sight with bread on the kitchen table! Each participant can expect to go home with one to two platters. These baskets have a very attractive sweet design, having many versatile uses from hedgerow & garden harvests to storing fruit & veg. In this course Rosemary will prepare a range of colourful homegrown willow to allow us to play around with designs and appreciate the expressive ways of our own heritage varieties. The event will comprise presentations of international models, followed by a discussion on the potential for an open access directory of fabricators, manufacturers, and workshops in Cork City and County. The project aims to support small scale local manufacturing by making fabrication in Cork more accessible to designers, makers, and artists. benchspacecork.ie | hello@benchspacecork.ie A Discussion with Sonia from Kilcoe Studios on the botanical areas of her work 16 Forest and Flock, Bantry, Co Cork Fri 23rd Aug : 10 - 11.30am Sonia from Kilcoe Studios will talk about her botanical paintings for her 2020 calendar, which is on the theme of Irelands hedgerows and farmland which features many images that are linked strongly with the current awareness about biodiversity. The talk will also include her other area of interest which is the cultural use of our plants for food, medicine, and crafts. There will be a chance near the end to learn some painting techniques and tips and to try it out. Materials are provided. Children’s Workshop Making Crowns & Drawing with Plants 16 Forest and Flock, Bantry, Co Cork Fri 23rd Aug : 12pm - 1pm (Ages - 6 - 13) In this fun drawing and making workshop, the aim is to help children fully understand what biodiversity is. We will study lots of different shaped leaves and do drawings and will make a fun wild crown from plants in the hedgerows while also talking about all the great things you can make from plants that you can play with. Wood Carving Techniques Masterclass Map 19 Benchspace Cork, Unit O15, Marina Commercial Park, Cork City Sat 10th Aug : 10 - 2pm ¤100, all materials provided, Booking required In this hands-on workshop, you will learn basic principles of working with wood while making your own one-of-a-kind carved wooden piece. Through short demonstrations and lectures, using a combination of power tools and hand tools, students will explore the material for its functionality, as well as a creative outlet. Benchspace are delighted to announce that as part of the 2019 Benchspace Artist-in-Residence programme, visiting international artist, Adrien Segal, will be giving a workshop on wood shaping and the carving techniques she uses in her practice. Topics covered will include different types of wood, grain direction, carving, shaping, and food safe finishes. At the end of the workshop, you will leave with a unique wooden carving. As an amenity combining elements of seating, planting, bike parking, it offers an alternative experience of the city and the street. This parklet is moveable and can be relocated to different areas in the city centre.
