Customer Loyalty
Shopper loyalty programs are the gateway for presenting customized offers and streamlining communication to reach consumers in
the most impactful way.
According to the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) State of the Industry Report® of 2020 Data*, in 2019,
43% of convenience shoppers belonged to at least one loyalty program and due to the pandemic, that percent jumped to 56.8%
in 2020. However, 40% of c-store shoppers failed to see relevance of incentives collected in the app indicating that the benefits
offered by joining were not relevant.
MyLotto Rewards™, the Ohio Lottery’s own customer loyalty program has almost 1.4 million members. These members entered
more than 122.3 million tickets for rewards in 2021, up 27% from 2020.
When examining the reasons for failed purchases, “out of stock” was cited as the top contributor in NACS research. More
than one out of five (22.7%) shoppers missed purchases due to out-of-stock items. Don’t assume customers are going to buy
something else or take money elsewhere in your store.
When it comes to the type of promotions that receive the most traction, 36% of shoppers noticed bundled offers (i.e., soft drinks
with candy) more than even buy one, get one free offers (BOGOs), which held the lead in previous years. In 2020, 31.7% of
customers noticed BOGOs, which took third behind reward bonus points.
Ohio Lottery promotions
Keno was the main beneficiary of BOGO offers in 2021. In addition to statewide offerings, independents and chains can work
with their sales or executive account representative to tailor offers at their location.
