President’s Pen Mike Stephens, Board President / wmsden@msn.com How Do We Stack Up? U nder the capable guidance of Linda Irwin, our efforts towards updating the Club’s strategic plan are progressing nicely. The member survey has been completed and tabulated. Responses were received from 385 members, remembering that two people per membership were invited to reply. We also completed two member workshops during January. On March 11th the Board and Staff will meet to review input from the workshops and to craft a suggested strategic plan going forward. I thought it would be interesting to review a recent Pulse Survey Report prepared by The McMahon Group, Inc. In it they re- ceived responses from 445 clubs across the country, 75% of which were from golf or country clubs. Average age of members is 58. MEMBERSHIP Retaining and Attracting Members: 77% of respondents stated they will be instituting strategies for member retention with the most popular strategies being: 1. Improve communications 2. Monitor satisfaction 3. Improve Clubhouse and other facilities 52% of respondents stated they will be using membership programs to attract new members next year. The most popular strategies selected include: 1. Offering incentives to existing members 2. Offering a time payment plan 3. Trial memberships Improving Member Satisfaction: Below is a table showing how clubs will deal with improving member satisfaction in 2017 compared to what was said last year: Outlook for 2017 Outlook for 2016 Improve Dining (60%) Improve Dining (66%) Attract More Member Usage (58%) Attract More Member Usage (63%) Improve recreation offerings (45%) More capital projects (48%) Survey Members (39%) Improve recreation offerings (47%) More capital projects (36%) Survey Members (41%) GOVERNANCE & OPERATIONS Strategic Plans: 60% of respondents stated they have a formal, written Strategic Plan that had been developed within the last 5 years. This is up from 53% back in 2011. Financial Stability: Over half of respondents (52%) stated their club is in excellent financial condition. President’s Pen continued... COMMUNICATION Most Important Communication Methods: Email remains the most important tool. Mobile apps and social networking are rising in importance year over year. In addition, text messaging saw a major increase in importance compared to last year. Social Networking: 73% of respondents stated they use some type of public social networking for their club. This is up from 65% last year. Of those using public social media platforms, 66% say it is effective and only 9% say it is ineffective. CLUB ACTIVITIES, PROGRAMS & SERVICES Fitness: 59% of clubs responding stated they had a fitness center, and 41% of this group say their fitness center is not large enough for their membership. Denim: In 2016, 82% allow denim. In 2017 it is expected to grow to 86%. What is interesting is that from those who do not allow denim/jeans at their Club, 21% are considering a policy change in 2017. This is up considerably from last year’s Pulse Survey where only 9% were considering a policy change. Dining: 92% of respondents stated they believe their members want the Club to be one of their favorite places to dine. In addition, 75% of respondents think their members consider their club to be one of their favorite places to dine. When asked the similar two questions to members in our membership surveys, 90% of members want their club to be one of their favorite places: however, only 43% of members think their club actually is. It will be informative to review the results of our member survey and working groups to update and adjust our strategic plan. I am confident that with the guidance of our membership, we can continue to make Red Rocks Country Club the place you want to be. Thanks for all of your help. I‘ll see you around the club. | Food & Beverage Update | A s we prepare for another summer season here at RRCC, the excitement level is begin- ning to build! Here are a couple of new and exciting things you can find at the Club this Spring… After hearing from many members about our tap beers, we have made a move with a distributor that carries one of the largest Colorado microbrew portfolios I have ever seen. We will be bringing in more local brews that cover a wider variety of options for tap beer. Chef Orlando and Chef Tim recently rolled out our new lunch and dinner menus, and will continue to offer you the freshest food possible throughout the Spring months. We offer ‘Butchers Block’ and ‘Market Fish’ specials Wednesday-Saturday nights, and are making an effort to let you know about those specials via email. If you ever want to know what the Dan Newstrand specials are before coming in, give the dining room a call at (303) 697-7191. We are also Food & Beverage Director working on food fare at the pool/cabana for the summer and we are looking forward to to get the pool up and running. We are continuing to offer Tuesday Night Family nights. Every Tuesday night is Pasta night EXCEPT the last Tuesday of the month. On those Tuesdays, we will have a special themed buffet. Watch the Slate emails for more details on these events. Don’t forget to join us for Happy Hour on Wednesday and Friday nights from 4pm to 8pm. On the first Friday of every month, we have live entertainment in the bar, in addition to Happy Hour. As always, we love to hear from you! What worked? What didn’t? And everything in between. Feedback from you is how we continue to improve your Club. I can always be reached at dnewstrand@redrockscountryclub.org or (303) 352-2037 with any comments or suggestions you may have. Meetings, Parties & Events at Your Club Our 2017 Calendar is filling quickly! Book your next meeting or special occaision at your Club. Let our Hospitality team handle all of the details. | Get Golf Ready - For Spring! | CHRIS SCHAFER, PGA - HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL A s the weather breaks this month, we get that uncontrollable excitement to play golf! We watch the Masters Tournament religiously and most of us run to the driving range Sunday after the Masters has concluded. In Colorado, we have the best of both worlds. We get to put away our ski/snowboard gear and transfer to golf. Here are a few tips on getting ready for spring, and transitioning into summer. 1) Get in Golf Shape – With any luck, you have stayed trim and fit this winter. Then there is the rest of us – don’t fret! There’s still time. The easiest thing to do is to get out and walk, especially if you are a walking golfer. Next step, get your heart rate up with a light jog. 2) Get a Proper Club Fitting – If you are on the market for new clubs, either a driver, fair- way wood, hybrid or an entire set of irons, be sure to get fitted for the right clubs. Fitting personnel at your local club or golf equipment store are trained to analyze your swing characteristics to help match you with the clubs that best fit your game. 3) Regrip your Clubs – If you are all set with your clubs, give them a fresh set of grips. Most grip companies make it very easy to replace your grips, the right way. Use Lamkin’s or Golf Pride’s online grip selector tool to find the best grip to fit your game. 4) Hit the Books – Before you hit the links, hit the books. Make sure you brush up on your golf etiquette so you don’t get caught behaving badly on the course. The USGA’s Etiquette 101 section is a handy online tool. 5) Plan your Season – Most golfers have a ‘bucket list’ full of golf destinations they hope to play. Why not make a more realistic list for 2017? Pick new courses in your area, or ones in your region that you have always wanted to play. Planning a vacation with the family? Use that time to play somewhere you have never experienced. 6) Get Competitive – Whether you are a scratch golfer or a 20 handicap, the game can sometimes be more fun with the pressure of competition. Join a Private Club (like RRCC) and get involved in member events. Join a local weekly local league, such as Golf Now’s Golf League, research the best net or gross tournaments in your area, or join an ama- teur tour like Golf Channel Amateur Tour to meet and play other golfers with an appetite for competition. 7) Hit the Range – Of course, this sounds like an obvious tip for golfers getting ready for the season. But it is easy to go to the range and waste your time. Instead, practice with a purpose. Have measurable goals and track your prog- ress. 8) Stay Flexible – By now, you have done the workouts (right?!). Now, it’s time to stay flexible in order to maximize your golf swing. Core exercises are also very important. 9) Learn the Rules – If you’re unsure of any rule changes over the off-season, use the USGA’s Rules of Golf to get caught up. www.usga.org 10) Dress Appropriately – If it’s early in the season, you are going to want to dress appropriately to be ready for any weather that may come; hot, cold, wet or dry. Could this Be the Year to Upgrade Your Driver? BOBBY NORMAN - ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL I t is a seemingly endless debate: Can a new club really make you a better golfer? I have talked to numerous golfers on both sides of the argument, and we have all encountered both (MWT), which allow golfers of all skill levels to precisely tune their driver to suit their needs. When our 2017 schedule is available, we sign up on ForeTees about three weeks before each match beginning the last week in April. Please make sure you can play both the home & the away game. Our intent is to ensure that all senior golfers who sign up will be given the opportunity to play a couple of matches. | Ladies Tuesday Night League | Version 2.0 • New and Improved! New Golfers, New Members, Working Women, and longtime members and friends! Playing 9 holes on a Tuesday Night is a wonderful way to meet other women at the club. And now you have options: Option 1: TNL 101 - If you’re new to the club, new to golf, don’t want to play match play, or don’t have a team, Tues- day Night Ladies is kicking off a new option. TNL 101 is a 9 hole Tuesday night option that will include a game of the week, some mini-clinics and advice from our pros Ben and Chris, and an opportunity to play with other women at the club. Any RRCC member may sign up. You do not need to have a handicap to play. Cost for this option is $25.00 per person. Option 2: Match Play League - If you love Match Play and the chance to reconnect with your friends, or if you want to join our match play league, Tuesday Night Ladies will still include a two flight match play format with two-woman teams playing 9-hole best ball matches. Match play teams may have three members and all members must have a handicap. Only two team members will play each week. Cost per team (2 or 3 member teams) is $100 (per team) for the season. Tuesday Night Ladies play will start this year on May 9, and continue with 8 more Tuesday night dates through August 8 (we’ve built in some make-up dates in case of rain/snow!). If you’re interested in learning more, or are not sure which option might work for you, we’re having an Information Night on April 18. Our TNL Kick-off Party will be April 25. And for those of you who want more information on match play rules, scoring, handicapping your own cards and such (we’re ac- cepting suggestions) we’ll have a separate Rules/Scoring Event on May 2 to make sure you get all your questions answered. If you’re not sure if you want to play, or do not have a team, come to the Information Night, or the Kick-off Party so we can convince you to come out and play! All women golfing members at RRCC can play (you do not have to be a member of the LGA). Sign up for the 2017 TNL & TNL101 is on ForeTee. If you would like more information on TNL 101, please contact Bonnie John- son: (702) 217-3055 or bonniejohnsonmsrd@gmail.com or our Golf Pros. | Golf Events - Just for the Ladies! | Basic Golf Rules Clinic - FREE! A Basic Golf Rules Clinic will be presented at Red Rocks Country Club on Saturday, April 1 at 9:30 AM and is expect- ed to last approximately 2 hours. This is a free Basic Clinic that all Red Rocks Ladies are invited to attend. There will be two short clinics presented by two of our own members: Wendy Walberg, LGA Rules Chair, and Peggy Coleman, LGA Past President. Both Wendy and Peggy serve on the CWGA (Colorado Women’s Golf Association) Rules Committee. Sandra Schnitzer, who is the CWGA Rules Committee Chairwoman, will also be joining us. The first clinic will cover Free Relief and Penalty Relief Situations (these are the majority of rules situations that most of us encounter—how to deal with obstructions like rakes and cart paths, ground under repair, water hazards, ball out of bounds, lost ball, etc). The second clinic will address Etiquette and Pace Play. Each session will last approx- imately 30-45 minutes. In addition, between and after the sessions, we will have some hands on demonstrations about how to determine your nearest point of relief (for when your ball lands on the cart path!). Handouts will be given out, and free USGA Rules Booklets will be provided by the CWGA. Seating will be limited, so reservations should be made on Foretees Events, or call the Pro Shop at 303-697-8008. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Walberg at wwalberg@walbergallan.com or Peggy Coleman at pcoleman897@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you there! - MaryAnn Regiec, 2017 LGA President 20 THERock March/April 2017
